What Is Sizing Like at Gant? Your Complete Women's Fit Guide

Gant runs true to size on the whole, but with a slightly generous, relaxed cut — particularly across the shoulders and chest — so if you're between sizes, I'd almost always suggest sizing down rather than up. That said, it really does depend on the garment type, and there are a few quirks worth knowing before you add to basket.

I've been a fan of Gant for years. There's something about the brand that feels effortlessly put-together without trying too hard — that whole New England preppy thing translated into a very wearable, European sensibility. I remember buying my first Gant Oxford shirt about a decade ago and being genuinely surprised by the quality. The fabric weight, the buttons, the collar — it all felt far more considered than the price point suggested. But I also bought it in my usual size and swam in it. Lesson learned.

How Gant Women's Sizing Works

Gant uses standard UK/EU sizing — so you'll see sizes listed as 6, 8, 10 through to 18 in most styles, with some pieces also shown as XS–XL. Their size guide maps fairly well to UK high street sizing, though a few things are worth flagging:

  • Shirts and blouses: These come up slightly large. The classic Oxford shirt in particular has a boxy, relaxed silhouette that's intentional — it's not a fitted shirt brand. If you want it to look polished (rather than borrowed-from-a-boyfriend), size down one.

  • Knitwear: Their jumpers and cardigans tend to fit true to size with generous ease — great for layering, and the quality merino and lambswool pieces are excellent. If you prefer a more fitted look, again go one size down.

  • Trousers and chinos: These tend to be cut with a straight, slightly relaxed leg. Waistbands are proportioned generously — I find the hips and thighs fine, but the waist can sometimes be an inch or two bigger than expected. Worth bearing in mind if you carry more weight around your hips or thighs.

  • Dresses and skirts: These are less widely available but generally come up true to size. Gant doesn't do a huge range here — their womenswear is really built around smart-casual separates.

  • Outerwear: Coats and jackets tend to come up large. I always size down in Gant outerwear — their cuts assume layering underneath, so even if you're planning on a chunky knit under your jacket, your usual size should be absolutely fine.

Who Is Gant Best For?

Honestly? Gant is brilliant if you love classic, well-made separates and don't want to chase trends every season. The brand has real staying power — you'll still be wearing a Gant piece in ten years and it won't look dated. It suits women who love clean lines, quality fabrics, and that timeless smart-casual register that works from weekend walks to smart office environments.

Where it can be trickier is if you're petite (the cuts can overwhelm a smaller frame) or if you prefer very fitted, bodycon-style pieces — that's simply not Gant's aesthetic. The brand is built around ease and movement, not a sculpted silhouette.

Gant vs Other Classic Heritage Brands — How Does the Sizing Compare?

It's useful to know where Gant sits in relation to similar brands — especially if you're deciding where to spend your money:

  • Boden — Similar relaxed, quality-driven fit. Boden tends to run slightly smaller in the body but longer in the torso. Both are great for petite and average heights but can be tricky for longer legs.

  • Barbour — The overlap between Gant and Barbour fans is huge. Barbour outerwear also runs large; their shirts and knitwear are broadly similar in cut. I'd say Gant is slightly more polished in the detail; Barbour leans more rugged and outdoorsy.

  • Tommy Hilfiger — The American preppy counterpart. Tommy runs true to size but can be narrower across the shoulders than Gant. Both feel premium high street rather than luxury.

  • Massimo Dutti — The Spanish sibling to Gant in terms of smart-casual territory. Massimo Dutti runs smaller and more fitted — if you like Gant but want a sharper silhouette, this is a natural step across.

  • Me&Em — A UK favourite for exactly this kind of elevated everyday dressing. Me&Em runs true to size and is notably better for curvier figures than Gant, whose cuts are quite straight up-and-down.

  • Whistles — Slightly more fashion-forward than Gant but in a similar price bracket. Whistles sizing is very consistent and tends to run true to size across categories.

  • Jigsaw — Another brand that Gant fans often love. Jigsaw runs slightly smaller and is cut with a more feminine, European shape. The quality is comparable and I'd say the two brands work brilliantly together in a wardrobe.

  • Crew Clothing — Very similar heritage-casual DNA. Crew tends to come up slightly smaller than Gant and is generally better for petite heights.

  • Fat Face — The more casual, outdoorsy end of the same customer. Fat Face sizing is pretty consistent and tends to run true to size.

  • White Stuff — Slightly more relaxed and playful in print and colour, but the fit and sizing logic is similar to Gant — generous, easy cuts. White Stuff can be particularly good for fuller busts and hips.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

If you love Gant's quality-first, heritage approach but fancy something a little more under the radar, these two are worth a look:

  • Sunspel — A British brand with over 160 years of history, Sunspel is best known for its T-shirts and fine knitwear. The quality is exceptional and the brand has a minimal, timeless aesthetic that Gant fans absolutely gravitate towards. Sizing runs true with a relaxed, unfussy fit. Worth every penny.

  • Colmar — An Italian heritage brand best known for ski and outerwear, but their everyday knitwear and casual pieces are genuinely beautiful. Sizing runs slightly small (Italian standard), so size up one. If you've ever wondered what Gant would look like with a little more Italian sophistication, Colmar is your answer.

Quick Sizing Tips for Shopping Gant Women's

  • When in doubt between two sizes, size down — Gant's relaxed cuts mean you almost never need to go up.

  • Shirts specifically: if you have a fuller bust, stay in your usual size for comfort and just know it will be slightly boxy across the body — which, frankly, can look brilliant tucked into wide-leg trousers.

  • Gant's knitwear washes beautifully but check the care label — merino will shrink in a hot wash (ask me how I know).

  • Outerwear: your usual size is absolutely fine even for layering — no need to size up here unlike at some brands.

  • If you're petite (under 5'3"), be aware that Gant's trouser length tends to run long. The shirts, however, can work brilliantly as a dress with a belt — a look I've worn more times than I can count.
