What Is Sizing Like at Hill House Home?

Hill House Home runs largely true to size, but the pieces it is famous for — those cult smocked Nap Dresses — are far more forgiving than that, with elasticated smocking that comfortably flexes a size in either direction. So if you are hovering between two sizes, you honestly cannot go far wrong. The brand uses letter sizing (XS through to 2XL) rather than UK numbers, and its own advice is refreshingly simple: pick your size by your bust measurement, because that is where the fit lives.

I will be honest — I was a Hill House sceptic for the longest time. A smocked midi dress for the price of a decent winter coat? I rolled my eyes. Then a stylist friend lent me her Ellie for a garden wedding, and I spent the entire day comfortable, photographed beautifully, and quietly ordering my own on the train home. Lesson learned: sometimes the hype is right.

The smocked Nap Dresses: forgiving, with one catch

The Ellie, Elizabeth and Caroline styles all share that signature smocked bodice, and it is the smocking that does the heavy lifting. It stretches around the bust and ribcage, which is exactly why so many people get away with sizing down. A few things worth knowing before you order:

The classic Ellie runs generous and long. If you are small or average busted, sizing down one is the smart move — plenty of size 8–10 women happily wear an XS.
If you are fuller busted (a DD cup or above), do the opposite. Stay true to size, or even size up, so the smocking sits neatly at your ribcage rather than riding up across your bust and pulling vertically.
Length runs long by UK standards. The Ellie is designed to hit mid-calf, but on anyone under 5'2" it reads more like a maxi. The Elizabeth is the cropped, above-the-knee version if you would rather show some leg.

The structured styles fit closer to the body

Not everything at Hill House is smocked. The button-front dresses, fitted tops and the Charlotte (which has a fuller skirt and runs a touch smaller) behave like normal tailored clothing — less stretch, less wiggle room. For these, take your true size, and size up if you have a pronounced bust-to-waist difference and want to avoid any gaping at the buttons.

Fabric and a quick honesty note

Most Nap Dresses are unlined cotton, which is wonderful for warm weather and machine washable, but the white and palest styles can be a little sheer in bright light. A pair of slip shorts underneath solves it instantly — I never wear mine without. Wash cold and line dry to keep that smocking springy; hot tumble drying tires out the elastic far quicker than people expect.
