What Is Sizing Like at Hollister? A Stylist's Honest Answer

Hollister runs small — often very small — and if you've ever confidently grabbed your usual size off the rail only to find yourself doing an awkward shimmy in a changing room cubicle wondering what went wrong, you are absolutely not alone. The brand sizes for a slim, narrow American-teen silhouette, and once you understand that, shopping there becomes a lot less frustrating. The golden rule: size up at least one, sometimes two, particularly in jeans and fitted tops.

I'll be honest — I have a complicated history with Hollister. In my early twenties I had a brief obsession with their low-rise jeans (it was a different era, we don't talk about it), and I spent more time squinting at their baffling waist-to-hip sizing than I care to admit. Fast forward to now and I understand the brand properly. It's actually a decent buy once you crack the sizing code.

Why Does Hollister Size So Small?

Hollister is owned by Abercrombie & Fitch and was originally conceived to appeal to teenagers and young adults in their mid-teens to early twenties. The brand's sizing reflects that — it's based on a narrow, lean American body template that frankly doesn't translate well to the average UK woman's proportions, which tend to be curvier through the hip and fuller through the bust.

This isn't a criticism of Hollister — it's just important context. Their target demographic has genuinely shifted in recent years and they've quietly improved their size range and inclusivity, but the cut still skews narrow. Know that going in and you'll be fine.

Hollister Jeans Sizing: What You Actually Need to Know

Hollister jeans are sold in US waist measurements (24–33) with separate inseam options — Short (28"), Regular (30"), and Long (32") — which is actually really useful and something I wish more brands did. Here's how to navigate it:

  • Waist sizing runs small. A UK size 10 typically has a 28" waist — in Hollister jeans, you'll often need a 29 or 30. Go up one, and then check the hip measurement if you're curvier.

  • The hip allowance is minimal. If you carry more volume through the hip and thigh — as many of us do — the jeans will feel tight even if the waist fits. Size up for hip comfort first, then use a belt if the waist is a touch loose.

  • Inseam choice is a genuine plus. At 5'4" I'm right on the border of Short and Regular — I go Regular and wear them with a slight break at the ankle. If you're petite, the Short option is genuinely short and works well without hemming.

  • Low-rise styles are back in their range and these fit even tighter through the hip. Unless you're very comfortable going up two sizes, I'd approach with caution if you're an hourglass shape.

  • High-rise styles are more forgiving — the extra fabric through the waist and hip gives you a little more room to work with. Their Ultra High Rise jeans are probably their most universally flattering cut right now.

Hollister Tops, Hoodies & Knitwear Sizing

Hollister's tops use standard XS/S/M/L/XL sizing, but again — go up. A UK 10/12 will generally need a Medium, not a Small. Their signature oversized hoodies and sweatshirts are intentionally cut big (that's part of the look), so with those you can often go true-to-size or even down. Fitted T-shirts and camis, however, are cut very narrow through the bust — if you're above a B cup, size up without hesitation.

Their knitwear is soft and decent quality for the price point, and the relaxed fits are genuinely lovely. The cropped styles suit shorter frames particularly well.

Hollister Sizing vs. UK High Street Sizing

Just to give you a rough comparison — a UK size 12 woman would typically be:

  • A Medium at H&M or Zara

  • A Small or Medium at ASOS

  • A Large at Hollister — and sometimes a size 30 jean rather than a 28

It's not a reflection on you. It's just how the brand runs. Size up, wear the label nobody else can see, and get on with enjoying the clothes.

Style Tips for Shopping Hollister

  • Their denim is the star of the show. The quality-to-price ratio on their jeans is genuinely strong — wear them with a simple tucked-in tee and white trainers for an effortless off-duty look.

  • Layer the hoodies. Hollister's oversized hoodies have earned their cult status. Wear over a longline tee with wide-leg trousers and chunky trainers — it looks far more considered than the price suggests.

  • Be cautious with the really stretchy styles. Stretch fabric in small sizing can look neat on, but it also shows every bump and movement. Opt for their mid-weight denim for a cleaner silhouette.

  • Their sale section is excellent. Prices drop significantly and the quality doesn't change. There's no shame in waiting it out.

High Street & Premium Alternatives to Hollister

If the sizing is putting you off, or you just want that same casual-cool vibe with a more generous cut, these are the brands I'd point you towards:

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — Hollister's parent brand, and in recent years Abercrombie has had something of a fashion glow-up. Their jeans in particular have garnered serious press attention and their sizing is slightly more accommodating. Same DNA, more grown-up execution.

  • ASOS — enormous denim range in a huge spread of sizes, with fit guides that actually help. Great for replicating the casual American aesthetic with far more size inclusivity.

  • Urban Outfitters — similar youthful, laid-back energy with a more editorial edge. Their Bdg denim line is excellent and sizes more consistently than Hollister.

  • Topshop — the cult denim brand that still delivers brilliant casual jeans. Sizing is far more UK-proportioned than Hollister and the quality has remained solid.

  • Levi's — the obvious alternative if you love denim and want something that'll outlast trends. Levi's sizing is logical, well-documented, and their straight-leg and wide-leg styles are amongst the best on the market.

  • The Gap — genuinely underrated for casual American-prep staples. Their denim runs true-to-size, their hoodies are excellent, and the quality is more consistent than Hollister across the board.

  • Tommy Hilfiger — if you want the American casual aesthetic at a premium level, Tommy delivers it in spades. Their sizing is clear, generous, and the cut quality is a step up.

  • Banana Republic — elevated casual American with brilliant denim and knitwear. Sizing skews more generously than Hollister and suits women who want the same effortless feel with slightly more polished construction.

Two Independent Brands Worth Discovering

If you love what Hollister is going for but want something a bit less mainstream, these two are genuinely brilliant:

  • Nudie Jeans — a Swedish organic denim brand with a devoted following. The quality is exceptional, the sizing is honest and consistent, and crucially they repair your jeans for free for life. If you care about what you buy and who makes it, Nudie is one of the best in the game.

  • Wrangler — okay, you might raise an eyebrow, but Wrangler has quietly had a significant fashion moment and deserves a second look. Their heritage cuts and western-influenced denim have been featured in Vogue and Elle, they size generously through the hip, and they're great value. Far cooler than the stigma suggests.
