What Is Sizing Like at Jack Wolfskin? An Honest Fit Guide

Jack Wolfskin generally comes up true to size, but with a straight, slightly boxy cut — and the outerwear in particular is deliberately roomy so you've space to layer underneath. So if you're between sizes, petite, or narrow through the shoulders, that built-in generosity is the thing to keep an eye on. Get your head around that one quirk and the brand is very easy to buy with confidence.
I learned this the soggy way. A few winters back I grabbed a Jack Wolfskin shell in my "usual" size for a Lake District weekend, assuming German outdoor engineering meant a sleek, fitted line. It was gloriously waterproof — and also flapping around me like a one-woman tent by day two, when I'd ditched the fleece underneath. That's the whole point of the cut, I just hadn't clocked it. This is gear built around your layers, not around your silhouette.
So, does Jack Wolfskin run true to size?
Mostly yes — but it genuinely depends on the category, so here's how it breaks down:
Tops & base layers: True to size with a straight cut. Can feel a touch loose if you've a slim frame, but the moisture-wicking fabrics are designed to sit close enough to work.
Jackets & shells: Cut generously on purpose. That "extra" room is for mid-layers and freedom of movement — it isn't a sizing error.
Trousers: The opposite story. Waistbands tend to run snug, and because the sizing is EU-based the inseams come up long if you're under roughly 5'4".
Footwear: Anything with the Texapore waterproof membrane runs small — order a size up. This one catches people out constantly.
In plain English: a Jack Wolfskin Small lands around a UK 8–10, a Medium around a UK 12, and a Large around a UK 14–16. I'll spare you the giant conversion chart — they're a faff to read and Tellar does the maths for you properly anyway (more on that below).
How to choose your size
Layering under it? Buying a shell or insulated jacket you'll wear over jumpers — stick to your true size. The room is intentional.
Wearing it over a tee? If it's a milder-weather jacket going over next to nothing, consider sizing down for a cleaner line.
Petite or narrow-shouldered? Dropping a size often sharpens the fit without sacrificing movement.
Trousers: Go by your largest measurement — usually the hip — and brace yourself to check that inseam.
Worth knowing: even seasoned gear reviewers find Jack Wolfskin's own guide tugs them between two sizes, because measuring an old garment says one thing while measuring your actual body says another. My rule for outerwear is simple — size to your body, not to a jacket you already own.
My stylist's take on the fit
The straight, slightly boxy silhouette is brilliant for function but can read a little shapeless in town. A couple of easy fixes I lean on: cinch a roomy parka with a slim belt to bring the waist back, and embrace the longline styles that skim the hips — they're flattering and they keep your lower back warm, which my perpetually-cold love handles thank me for every January. Keep the volume up top in check by pairing with slim trousers or leggings, and you've got a clean, considered outdoor look rather than "lost in a marquee".
Where else to look on the high street
If Jack Wolfskin's cut isn't quite singing for you, these are the high street names I'd steer you towards for performance-leaning outerwear and layering:
Barbour — the gold standard for British waxed and quilted jackets; structured, country-ready and built to last for decades.
Seasalt Cornwall — coastal-tested waterproofs with a softer, more feminine cut and a genuinely flattering fit.
Fat Face — relaxed, weekend-ready outdoor pieces and brilliant fleeces at sensible prices.
Joules — playful, colour-led practical jackets and wellies for the school-run-to-dog-walk life.
Superdry — technical-feeling jackets and parkas with a younger, sportier edge and clear sizing.
Sweaty Betty — gorgeous run and trail layers if you want performance fabric with a sharper, body-skimming fit.
Lululemon — exceptional lightweight shells and layering pieces; the fit is precise and reliably true to size.
Timberland — rugged outerwear and the waterproof boots to match, with a sturdy, dependable cut.
Lands' End — outstanding-value packable down and squall jackets, with a generous, family-friendly fit.
Premium picks

Rab — Sheffield-born specialists in proper down and waterproofs; technical, trail-serious and beautifully made.
Patagonia — the ethical benchmark for outdoor kit, with hard-wearing fabrics and a fit that runs fairly true.
The North Face — dependable all-rounders from city puffers to summit shells, with sizing that's easy to predict.
Luxury & designer options
Arc'teryx — the connoisseur's choice; faultless waterproofing and an athletic, slightly trim cut.
Moncler — Italian designer down where the jacket is as much a statement as a layer.
Canada Goose — serious cold-weather investment parkas built for genuine sub-zero conditions.
Two independents worth knowing
Finisterre — a Cornish, B-Corp certified outdoor and surf brand making considered, repairable jackets with a clean, modern fit. A lovely ethical alternative if you want kit with a conscience.
Páramo — a quietly cult British brand beloved by birdwatchers and hill-walkers for its uniquely breathable, fully recyclable waterproof system. Boxy, but unbeatable in persistent rain.
