What Is Sizing Like at Japna?

Japna runs broadly true to size, but with a deliberately relaxed, flowy cut — so most people take their usual size and get a soft, draped fit rather than anything body-skimming. If you want a closer shape, you can comfortably size down. The one thing UK shoppers need to clock straight away: Japna is an American brand, so everything is labelled in US sizing, which is a few digits behind the UK number you're used to.
I've styled a fair amount of Japna over the years — it crops up constantly on Poshmark, eBay and Vinted because it's the kind of pretty, printed holiday dress people buy, wear twice and resell. So I know its quirks well, and I want to save you the guesswork.
How Japna Actually Fits
Japna built its name on flowy maxis, smocked sundresses, tiered minis and the odd printed jumpsuit. That relaxed design language tells you most of what you need to know about fit. These aren't tailored pieces with darts and structure — they're made to move.
True to size on the label — take your normal size and you'll get the intended relaxed drape.
Smocked and elasticated styles are forgiving — anything with shirring across the bust or back will stretch a full size in either direction, so don't overthink those.
Size down for a fitted look — if you prefer your maxi to skim rather than float, drop one size. I do this with their strappy midi dresses.
Watch the length — Japna maxis run long, designed for a US average height. If you're petite, expect floor-sweeping; if you're tall, that's a genuine bonus and rare in this price bracket.
The US sizing catch for UK shoppers
This is where people get caught out. A Japna "Small" or a US 4 is not the same number you'd see on a UK rail. American womenswear sits a few sizes below UK labelling, so the size that looks tiny on the tag is usually roomier than it sounds. My rule: ignore the number, look at the bust and waist measurements on the listing, and match those to your own body. With resale listings especially, a quick measurement check beats trusting the label every time.
Fabric and the long game
Japna leans heavily on cotton, viscose and lightweight printed fabrics. The good news: natural fibres breathe beautifully in heat, which is why these dresses are such holiday workhorses. The catch: cotton can shrink slightly on a hot wash and viscose can relax with wear. If you're between sizes, I'd size up by one and let the fabric do its thing, rather than buying snug and regretting it after the first wash.
My Honest Take
I'll be candid — Japna is a fun, affordable, pretty-print brand, not a heritage investment piece. I once grabbed a tiered Japna maxi for a friend's beach wedding in about ten minutes flat, and it photographed gorgeously. A genuine win. But I've also had a smocked one go a little shapeless after a few summers, which is the trade-off at this price. Buy it for what it is: easy, joyful, warm-weather dressing that won't dent your bank balance.
Where I'd Shop for the Same Look

Because Japna can be hit-and-miss to find in the UK, here's where I'd send a client wanting that same printed, flowy, easy-to-wear feel — across every budget.
High street
Mango — the strongest high street pick for flowy printed maxis with a slightly elevated finish. Sizing is fairly true but cut lean, so size up if you're between.
Monsoon — the original UK home of embellished, boho occasion dresses. Generous, forgiving fits and beautiful prints.
Nobody's Child — sustainable, print-led dresses that nail the Japna aesthetic with a more reliable UK fit and better fabric longevity.
Boden — dependable for floral midis and a fit that genuinely suits real bodies; their sizing is consistent year on year.
Phase Eight — excellent for flattering printed dresses with a touch more structure, ideal if you want shape without losing the float.
Hush — relaxed, easy maxis and sundresses with that same throw-on-and-go spirit; tends to run roomy.
Joules — playful prints and a true-to-size, slightly relaxed cut that's perfect for summer.
Premium
Anthropologie — the natural step up for bold prints and boho romance; sizing runs generous, so check measurements.
Whistles — cleaner, more grown-up prints with a precise, true-to-size cut.
Sezane — French-girl florals and feminine silhouettes; sizing runs small, so size up.
Ganni — Scandi prints with personality and a relaxed, true-to-size fit if you want the look with more fashion credibility.
Luxury / designer
Ralph Lauren — the gold standard for prairie and boho-leaning printed dresses, with sizing that's classic and consistent.
By Malene Birger — elevated prints and beautiful drape for when you want a printed dress that reads as investment, not impulse.
Two independents worth knowing
Pink City Prints — block-printed cotton dresses made by artisans in India, which is honestly the closest spiritual match to Japna's craft story, but with far better quality. True to size and a joy to wear.
Never Fully Dressed — a London independent doing bold, clever prints and genuinely flattering wrap and tiered shapes. Inclusive sizing and runs true.
