What Is Sizing Like at JD Williams? An Honest Stylist’s Guide

JD Williams generally runs true to size, with a gentle leaning towards generous – particularly across its casual, jersey and everyday ranges, where I’d often suggest sizing down if you’re between two sizes. It’s one of the most genuinely size-inclusive retailers in the UK, spanning roughly UK 8 to UK 32 with dedicated petite, regular and tall fits, so the brand has clearly put real thought into how clothes sit on a wide variety of bodies. That said, “true to size” is never the whole story with any retailer, so let me talk you through what I’ve actually seen on real people in the fitting room.

So, does JD Williams come up big or small?

In my experience styling clients of every shape, JD Williams is one of the more forgiving fits on the high street. A few patterns worth knowing:

  • Casual and jersey pieces – tunics, loungewear, stretchy dresses and t-shirts tend to run slightly roomy. If you like a closer fit, take your usual size; if you want a relaxed drape, you’re already covered.

  • Structured and tailored items – blazers, shirt dresses and anything with a defined waist sit closer to true measurement, so I’d trust your standard size here.

  • Denim – this is where JD Williams quietly shines. Jeans come in slim, straight, bootcut and jegging shapes across multiple leg lengths, which is a rare luxury. Waistbands can be a touch generous, so a size down is often the sweet spot.

  • Footwear – they offer wider fittings as standard, which I love, but it does mean standard widths can feel a little roomy. Half a size down works for many.

A quick confession: early in my styling career I ordered a JD Williams wrap dress in my “safe” size for a client, assumed it would be snug, and it arrived swimming on her. Lesson learned – with this brand, I now always check the actual measurements rather than the size label, and nine times out of ten that’s the difference between a return and a keeper.

How to nail the fit first time

The single biggest mistake I see is shopping by dress size alone. Sizes drift wildly between retailers – a 14 at one shop is a 16 at another – so the label tells you very little. My fitting-room routine is simple:

  • Measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape, snug but not tight.

  • Compare those numbers to the garment’s flat measurements, not the size name.

  • For dresses and waisted pieces, size to your largest measurement and tailor the rest.

  • If you’re petite or tall, use JD Williams’ length-specific ranges rather than turning up hems – the proportions are designed to sit correctly.
