What Is Sizing Like at Joseph?

Joseph runs small — sometimes significantly so compared to what you're used to on the British high street. It's one of those brands where you might walk in wearing a confident size 12 and leave quietly clutching a 14, wondering what happened. I say that with no judgement whatsoever, because I've been there myself. The reason isn't vanity sizing in reverse — it's that Joseph uses traditional French sizing, which simply hasn't been inflated the way UK sizing has over the decades. Once you understand that, the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

The French Sizing Issue: What It Actually Means for You

Most British high street brands have gradually increased the actual measurements behind their size labels — a UK 12 today is often considerably larger than a UK 12 was twenty years ago. Joseph hasn't followed suit. The brand adheres to a more traditional French sizing standard, which means the numbers on the label correspond to older, smaller measurements. In practice, this means most women need to go up one — sometimes two — sizes compared to what they'd buy at Zara or M&S.

Joseph uses French/EU sizing. Here's how it broadly converts to UK sizes, along with the measurements Joseph bases each size on:

French/EU SizeUK Size (approx.)Bust (cm)Waist (cm)Hips (cm)34682648836886689238109072964012947610042149880104441610284108

⚠️ Important note:These conversions are a guide, not a guarantee. Because the measurements are smaller than what UK shoppers are used to, many women find they need to go up one full size compared to their usual UK size. Always check your measurements against the chart rather than going by your habitual UK number.

How the Fit Actually Feels: Category by Category

Beyond the sizing numbers, Joseph has a very distinct cut. It's slim and tailored throughout — the silhouette is elongated, precise and frankly quite unforgiving if you're between sizes. Here's what to expect across the key categories:

  • Trousers – Joseph's trousers are the brand's signature and genuinely brilliant. The Coleman and Den styles in particular have a devoted following, and rightly so — the fabric quality and tailoring is exceptional. That said, they are cut with a lean hip and thigh profile. If you carry any volume through the hips or thighs, size up. And measure your actual waist and hips before ordering; don't guess.

  • Coats & outerwear – These are beautifully made and worth the investment — but they run narrow, particularly through the sleeves and across the shoulders. If you have broader shoulders or want to layer a chunky knit underneath (which, in a British winter, you absolutely will), go up a size without hesitation.

  • Knitwear – Joseph cashmere and merino knits are some of the best on the market. These tend to be slightly more forgiving than the tailored pieces, but still run on the slim side. Stick to your measured size unless you like a relaxed, slightly oversized fit — in which case, size up.

  • Silk tops & blouses – These run fitted through the bust and shoulders. If you're fuller-chested or have wider shoulders, size up here. The sleeve width in particular can catch people out.

  • Dresses – Varies enormously by style. Slip and shirt styles are more relaxed and tend to be more forgiving. Tailored or structured dresses follow the same slim-cut logic as the trousers, so measure carefully before buying.

My Honest Advice Before You Buy

Post Image

I always tell clients: Joseph is an investment, and it's worth a few minutes of prep to protect that investment. Take your bust, waist and hip measurements before you order anything. Don't trust your usual UK size number — it genuinely will not translate reliably here. The pieces are so well made that when they fit, they fit beautifully. But the margin for error is small because the cut is precise. Get the size right and you'll wear these things for years.

One more thing: if you're planning a co-ord — the jacket and matching trousers, say — your size may well differ between the two. Size for the piece, not the matching set. That's not a flaw; it's just the reality of proper tailoring.

If Joseph's Sizing Doesn't Work For You — Or the Price Point Is a Stretch

Joseph sits firmly in the luxury bracket, and I completely understand that the price point doesn't work for everyone. Here are the brands I'd send clients to for a similar elevated, minimal aesthetic — from premium high street through to designer alternatives:

  • Reiss – My first recommendation for polished, contemporary tailoring at a more accessible price. Their trousers and blazers are reliably well-cut and the sizing is more in line with standard UK measurements.

  • Me&Em – Possibly the best British brand right now for elevated, wearable dressing that actually fits a real body. Brilliant for trousers, knitwear and coats. More inclusive in cut than Joseph, and genuinely excellent quality.

  • LK Bennett – Perfect for structured dresses, elegant occasionwear and polished tailoring. A brilliant step-down from Joseph in price without compromising significantly on quality.

  • Anthropologie – For a softer, more relaxed take on the elevated wardrobe. Particularly good for knitwear, and their sizing tends to be more generous — a good call if Joseph's slim cut doesn't suit your shape.

  • Hobbs – Consistently good tailoring, excellent coats and a very reliable sizing system. If you want that Joseph-adjacent smart professionalism without the guesswork, Hobbs is a solid choice.

  • Massimo Dutti – A brilliant Spanish premium brand with a very similar pared-back aesthetic to Joseph. Their coats and trousers in particular are exceptional value at a fraction of the price.

  • Claudie Pierlot – French brand, naturally. Very chic, slightly playful and beautifully made. A great option if you love Joseph's European sensibility but want something a little less severe.

  • Hush – Underrated and brilliant. Excellent knitwear, relaxed tailoring and generous sizing. If Joseph's cuts feel too unforgiving, Hush gives you that quiet, considered aesthetic with far less stress.

For something more independent, I'm a huge fan of Sézane — a French brand with an effortless, deeply wearable take on luxurious basics. Their knitwear rivals Joseph's at a significantly lower price point, and the sizing is far more consistent for UK shoppers. And if it's exceptional British tailoring you're after, The Fold London is one of the best-kept secrets in premium womenswear — investment-level tailoring made specifically for professional women, with sizing that's clear, consistent and intelligently cut.
