What Is Sizing Like at Kappa? Does It Run Small?

Kappa runs small — particularly in their classic tracksuit pieces, fitted polos and logo-heavy staples — and if you're buying from their Italian or European sizing ranges, you'll almost certainly want to go up at least one size from your usual UK number. That said, this is a brand with real nuance to its sizing, and once you know what to expect, shopping Kappa is actually pretty straightforward.

I've been a Kappa fan since the early 2000s — I remember wearing the iconic Omini logo tracksuits long before they had their streetwear renaissance, and I've bought a fair few pieces since they came back into cultural relevance in a big way. My honest experience? The first time I ordered my usual size in the Kappa Banda track pants, they arrived looking like cropped wide-legs on me (I'm 5'7" with a longer leg). Not the look I was going for. I sized up, ordered again, and the fit was brilliant — that clean, slightly boxy athletic silhouette that makes the brand so appealing. Lesson learned the slightly expensive way.

Short answer: Size up by one UK size as a rule of thumb. For fitted styles and polos, possibly two. For oversized or relaxed cuts, your usual size should work fine.

A Bit of Background on Kappa Sizing

Kappa is an Italian sportswear brand — founded in Turin in 1967 — and like many European brands, they size to a continental standard that typically runs narrower and shorter than UK sizing. Their core sizing is based on Italian/European measurements, and the conversion doesn't always translate cleanly to UK high street equivalents.

In recent years, Kappa have produced more pieces aimed at the streetwear and lifestyle market (as opposed to pure performance sportswear), which means the fit has become slightly more relaxed in some lines. But their heritage pieces — the Banda tracksuits, the Kombat shorts, the classic polo shirts — still follow that original Italian athletic cut: quite slim in the body, narrower across the shoulders than you might expect, and often shorter in the leg than UK sizing would suggest.

Their size labelling can also vary depending on which retailer you're buying through. Buying direct from Kappa's website means you'll be working with European sizing (XS, S, M, L, XL); buying through a UK retailer like ASOS or JD Sports may give you UK-converted sizes. Always double-check which system the retailer is using before ordering.

Kappa Size Guide: European to UK Conversion

Here's a general guide to converting Kappa's European sizing to UK equivalents. These are approximate — always cross-reference with the individual product measurements:

Kappa EU SizeApprox. UK SizeBust (inches)Waist (inches)Hips (inches)XS / 34UK 6–831–3224–2533–34S / 36UK 8–1033–3426–2735–36M / 38UK 10–1235–3628–2937–38L / 40UK 12–1437–3830–3139–40XL / 42UK 14–1639–4132–3441–43XXL / 44UK 16–1842–4435–3744–46

Notice that each Kappa size effectively spans two UK sizes — which is why I'd always suggest going to the larger end of the range if you're between sizes. Buying the smaller option is almost always the mistake you regret.

Sizing by Product Type: What to Actually Expect

TRACKSUITS & JOGGERS

  • The iconic Banda tracksuit bottoms run narrow in the hip and thigh — size up one from your usual UK size

  • The waistband is elasticated which gives some flexibility, but the leg cut has very little ease; if you have fuller thighs, go up two sizes

  • Track jackets fit snugly across the shoulders — again, size up, especially if you have broader shoulders or a larger bust

  • Inseam lengths can be short compared to UK sportswear brands — worth checking the exact measurement if you're 5'7" or taller

T-SHIRTS & POLOS

  • Kappa's fitted polos are cut slim through the body — I'd size up two if you prefer any kind of relaxed fit

  • Their oversized logo tees are more generous and can often be ordered in your usual size

  • Sleeve length tends to sit a little shorter than UK equivalents at the same size

SHORTS & SKIRTS

  • The Kombat shorts have a very fitted rise and slim thigh cut — go up a size, especially if you're fuller in the hip

  • Any newer lifestyle-line shorts with a more relaxed cut are generally true-to-size or close to it

FOOTWEAR

  • Kappa trainers and shoes generally run true to UK size — no need to size up here

  • Some older trainer styles come up slightly narrow in the toe box, so if you have a wider foot, consider half a size up

How Kappa Fits Into the Wider Athleisure Market

Post Image

Kappa sits in an interesting position right now. They're not a performance sportswear brand in the traditional sense — you wouldn't wear Kappa to run a 10k — but they're also not purely fashion. They occupy that sweet spot of retro-sporty-cool that's been dominating street style since around 2017 and, honestly, shows no signs of slowing down. The Omini figure (that iconic double silhouette logo) is as recognisable as any luxury emblem, and the brand has serious credibility in football, motorsport and skiing heritage.

All of which makes the sizing issue slightly more frustrating — because when a Kappa piece fits well, it looks genuinely excellent. That clean Italian athletic cut, the contrast panels, the retro colourways. It's a very specific, very cool look. You just need to put in the work to get your size right before you order.

Alternatives to Kappa: High Street, Premium & Independent

If you love the Kappa aesthetic but find the sizing inconsistent or the range limited for your body type, here are my recommendations across different price points — all of them delivering that sporty-meets-stylish energy:

HIGH STREET

  • Sweaty Betty – a UK brand that has completely nailed the sporty-lifestyle crossover. Their sizing is clear, their fits are consistent, and the quality is significantly better than fast fashion alternatives. Great for tracksuit-adjacent co-ords that look as good off the gym as on

  • Lululemon – yes, it's a step up in price, but for logo tracksuits and sporty separates that actually fit properly, Lululemon is hard to beat. Their size chart is excellent and they offer a wide range of sizes

  • Gymshark – UK-born and now a global name, Gymshark does the fitted athletic look brilliantly and their sizing is generally true-to-scale UK sizes. Great if you want that sleek, close-fitting sporty silhouette without the Italian-cut gamble

  • Tommy Hilfiger – for a slightly more elevated sporty-casual take, Tommy Hilfiger's sport and casual lines carry that European athletic energy with much more reliable UK sizing. Their logo polos in particular are a brilliant Kappa alternative

  • Hollister – for casual sporty basics at a lower price point with reliable, consistent sizing and a generous, relaxed cut. Good for layering and easy everyday wear

  • Superdry – another brand with strong sporty-heritage credentials and a wide size range. Their tracksuits and zip-up hoodies carry that retro athletics feel and tend to be well-reviewed for fit accuracy

  • Calvin Klein – for a cleaner, more minimal version of the sporty aesthetic. Their performance and lounge lines have that European-brand confidence without the sizing inconsistency. Excellent quality at the price point

PREMIUM

  • Hugo Boss – Boss's athleisure range is underrated. Excellent quality, well-considered sizing, and a really clean sportswear-to-lifestyle feel that sits nicely above high street without being designer-level spend

  • Abercrombie & Fitch – their newer collections are much more grown-up than the brand's earlier reputation suggests. Their YPB activewear line is genuinely excellent and sizes consistently across the range

TWO INDEPENDENT PICKS

  • Castore – a British premium sportswear brand that's built a serious reputation for quality. Think high-performance fabrics, clean design, and a sizing standard that's refreshingly straightforward. Worn by professional athletes but genuinely accessible as a lifestyle brand. If you want something a level above Kappa in quality with none of the sizing headache, Castore is the answer

  • P.E Nation – an Australian brand with a strong UK following, known for bold retro-sporty designs with a fashion-forward edge. Think the aesthetic energy of Kappa but with contemporary cuts, better size inclusivity and clear sizing guidance. A genuinely brilliant left-field pick for anyone who loves the sport-meets-street look

Know Your Size Before You Order — Use Tellar

The Kappa sizing issue is a perfect example of why brand-to-brand size numbers are essentially meaningless. A size M in Kappa is not the same as a size M at Lululemon, Tommy Hilfiger or Gymshark — and ordering by instinct is how you end up with a tracksuit that fits like a wetsuit.
