What Is Sizing Like at Lady Biba?

Lady Biba runs small compared to standard UK sizing — often by a full size, sometimes more in structured, tailored styles. If you're ordering from this Nigerian powerhouse label for the first time, please do not assume your usual size will work. Measure first. I cannot stress this enough. I've had clients excitedly order a Lady Biba dress for a big work event, receive it, and immediately ring me in a panic because they can't get the zip past their hips. It's not the dress's fault — it's just a brand that's built for a very precise, sculpted fit, and that requires a bit of preparation on your end.

That said, Lady Biba is genuinely one of the most exciting brands I recommend to clients who want to dress with serious intention. Founded in Lagos in 2013 by designer Bisola Adeniyi, it's a brand built around power dressing — not the stiff, shoulder-padded kind from the eighties, but modern, structured confidence. Think defined waists, bold sleeves, architectural tailoring and the kind of dress that makes you walk into a room like you own it. When Lady Biba fits, it really fits. But getting there requires a bit of insider knowledge.

So Why Does Lady Biba Run Small?

The brand officially uses UK sizing conventions — and even states on its own size chart that it's designed with "a little tweak to make it more accommodating to curvy women." In practice, though, UK shoppers consistently find the pieces run tighter than expected, particularly across the bust, arms and waist. The reason? Lady Biba's signature aesthetic is close-fitting and body-conscious. The dresses are structured to skim and sculpt, the jumpsuits are built to nip at the waist, and many of the fabrics have little to no stretch. There's almost no ease built in — it's a brand that's designed to hug your body, not float around it.

If you have a fuller bust, wider hips, or are longer in the torso, these are the areas where you're most likely to run into fit issues. My standing advice to any new Lady Biba customer: go up at least one size from your usual UK size, and compare your measurements directly to the brand's size chart before pressing buy.

Sizing by Garment Type

Lady Biba isn't uniform across categories — here's how I'd break it down:

  • Structured Dresses: The trickiest category. Form-fitting through the bust and waist, with very little give in woven fabrics. Size up — possibly two sizes if you're busty. The pencil silhouettes in particular have a snug waist and a narrow skirt that can feel restrictive if you're between sizes.

  • Jumpsuits: Often snug at the waist and short in the torso for taller UK buyers. If you're over 5'7", pay particular attention to the torso length measurement. Waists are nipped right in — if you have a fuller waist, go up.

  • Suiting & Co-ord Sets: The tailored blazers and trousers fit more generously than the dresses, but still run close. The blazers have a fitted shoulder and a nipped waist — if you want any movement at all, size up.

  • Statement Sleeve Tops & Blouses: The arm and shoulder area is where Lady Biba most commonly catches UK buyers out. The sleeves are fitted. If you have broader shoulders or fuller upper arms, go up a size without question.

  • Wrap-style Dresses: Slightly more forgiving thanks to the adjustable wrap construction. Your usual size will often work here, but measure your hips to be sure.

  • Occasion & Event Wear: Designed to be worn fitted and with intention — these are not relaxed evening pieces. Measure carefully, size up where in doubt, and consider that you may want to move, sit, and breathe for a few hours!

My Golden Rules for Buying Lady Biba

Over the years I've helped quite a few clients navigate this brand, and the same rules come up every time. Follow these and you'll be fine:

  • Always measure your bust, waist and hips before ordering — don't rely on the size you think you are. Bodies change, sizing varies brand to brand, and Lady Biba's structure is less forgiving than most.

  • Size up when in doubt. A dress that's slightly too big can be altered. A dress that won't zip up is going back.

  • Check the torso length if you're buying a jumpsuit — particularly if you're 5'6" or taller. A jumpsuit that's too short in the body is genuinely uncomfortable to wear all day.

  • Look at the fabric content. Pieces with a little stretch (jersey, ponte) are more forgiving. Pure woven cotton or structured crepe? Measure twice.

  • Don't be put off by the process. Once you know your Lady Biba size, you'll reorder confidently — and the quality genuinely justifies the effort.

Who Is Lady Biba Actually For?

Post Image

I'd describe the Lady Biba customer as the woman who takes getting dressed seriously — not in a stressful way, but in the way a barrister picks a suit or a creative director picks a statement piece. If you've got an important pitch, a panel event, a job interview, or a dinner where you want to command the room without saying a word, Lady Biba is the answer. Founder Bisola Adeniyi talks about clothes as "a visual language of leadership" — and she means it. These aren't throw-on-and-go pieces; they're considered, deliberate, and genuinely spectacular when they fit correctly.

UK High Street Alternatives to Lady Biba

Lady Biba ships internationally but it's not always the most straightforward brand to return if the sizing goes wrong. If you want a similar energy — structured, tailored, confident dressing — here are the high street and premium alternatives I reach for with my clients:

  • Hobbs — brilliant for structured, professional dressing with a polished edge. Their tailored dresses and workwear suiting have a similar confidence to Lady Biba but with very consistent, true-to-size UK sizing. A genuine go-to for the power-dressing woman.

  • Phase Eight — excellent for structured occasion dresses that feel special without requiring a budget. Their pencil dresses and tailored shift styles capture a similar body-conscious silhouette, and sizing is reliable and inclusive.

  • Me&Em — if you want elevated everyday tailoring that punches well above its price point, Me&Em consistently delivers. Structured blazers, co-ord sets and sleek trousers in quality fabrics. Sizing is true to UK sizing and easy to navigate.

  • Ted Baker — known for body-skimming silhouettes and that distinctly dressed-up finish. Their occasion dresses have a real Lady Biba energy — structured, defined waists, statement details — and are widely available with easy returns.

  • Coast — particularly strong for occasion and event dressing. Bold colours, architectural shapes and pieces that feel genuinely special. Great for when you want Lady Biba drama at a more accessible price point.

  • Whistles — understated but consistently excellent. Their tailored trousers, structured blazers and minimalist dresses hit the same professional aesthetic without any sizing drama. Clean, modern and very wearable.

  • LK Bennett — the go-to for smart-occasion dressing in the UK. Pencil dresses, tailored suits and event-worthy pieces in good-quality fabrics. The fit is reliable and very flattering on a range of body shapes.

  • Reiss — for that sleek, luxury-adjacent finish. Reiss nails the structured bodycon and tailored midi dress territory with consistent quality and true-to-UK sizing. A staple in my clients' wardrobes for big professional moments.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

These are my left-field picks for this one — two smaller labels with serious power-dressing credentials:

  • Posse — an Australian label with a cult following among women who want elevated, thoughtfully designed pieces with a strong sense of identity. Their tailored trousers and structured shirting have that same intentional quality as Lady Biba, with a quieter, more minimalist palette. Genuinely worth knowing.

  • Saiid Kobeisy — a Lebanese couture designer who brings the same architectural drama and body-conscious tailoring as Lady Biba, but with a Middle Eastern luxury sensibility. Incredible for occasions. If you love what Lady Biba stands for stylistically, Saiid Kobeisy is the next step up the ladder.
