What Is Sizing Like at Levi's?

First Thing to Know: Levi's Sizes by the Numbers

Levi's men's jeans use the classic W x L system — waist by length, both in inches. So a 32 x 32 means a 32-inch waist and a 32-inch inside leg (the inseam). It sounds simple, and it is, but two things trip men up constantly:

  • The waist number is your body, not the jean. A "32" is meant to fit a 32-inch waist, but the finished garment is usually cut a touch larger to sit comfortably. More on that below.

  • Length matters as much as waist. Most pairs come in 30, 32 and 34 leg. A great-fitting waist with the wrong leg length will still look off — too much puddle at the ankle, or a flood that shows your socks.

My rule: get the waist right first, then sort the length. You can always have a hem taken up by a tailor for a tenner; you can't add fabric to a waistband.

Decoding the Fit Numbers (501, 511, 512 and the Rest)

This is where Levi's loses people. Those three-digit numbers aren't sizes — they're fits, and each one is a completely different shape. Learn these and you're halfway there:

  • 501 — Original. The icon. Straight leg, sits at the waist, button fly. Roomy through the seat and thigh. Timeless, but not a slim fit, so don't expect it to cling.

  • 502 — Tapered. Regular up top, narrows from the knee down. The best all-rounder for most blokes in my opinion — comfortable but still modern.

  • 511 — Slim. Cut close through the leg without being skin-tight. My personal go-to and the safest "smart" choice.

  • 512 — Slim Taper. Slim through the thigh, tapered at the ankle. Brilliant if you've got athletic legs.

  • 514 — Straight. Sits below the waist, straight from hip to hem. Relaxed without being baggy.

  • 541 — Athletic Taper. Extra room through thigh and seat, tapered ankle. Made for gym legs and rugby thighs.

  • 510 — Skinny. The tightest of the lot. Trendy, but only if you genuinely want that silhouette.

Here's the kicker: a 32 in a 501 and a 32 in a 511 will fit your waist similarly but feel like two different garments through the leg. Always check which fit you're looking at before you compare anything.

Do Levi's Run Big or Small?

The honest answer most articles dodge: it depends on the line. Here's what I've found over years of fittings:

  • Standard pre-shrunk pairs (most 511, 512, 502) tend to run fairly true to size, occasionally a touch generous on the waist. If you're between sizes, size down.

  • Vintage and premium "Made & Crafted" lines often run smaller and stiffer, especially in raw denim.

  • Stretch denim (anything with elastane) will feel snug on day one and relax with wear. Don't buy a size up to "settle in" — it'll bag out.

The waistband is also notorious for the "after-lunch" expansion myth. Rigid 100% cotton denim genuinely does give a little after an hour of wear, so a pair that feels firm-but-not-painful in the changing room is usually right.

Shrink-to-Fit: The 501 That Keeps Men Up at Night

You'll occasionally see the 501 Shrink-to-Fit (STF) — raw, unwashed denim sold deliberately oversized so it shrinks down to your body after the first wash. It's the purist's choice, but it's also where most sizing disasters happen.

If you go down the STF route:

  • Buy roughly one waist size and two inches in length larger than your normal Levi's — it'll shrink.

  • Expect the first soak to take the most off; they keep settling for a few washes.

  • If that sounds like guesswork, it is. For most men, the pre-shrunk version is the sensible call.

How I'd Actually Tell You to Buy a Pair

Strip it back and it's straightforward:

  1. Measure your real waist with a tape, around where the jeans will actually sit — not where your old jeans have stretched to.

  2. Pick the fit before the size. Decide 511 vs 502 vs 501 based on the shape you want.

  3. Match the leg length to your height and the break you like at the ankle.

  4. Check the fabric. Rigid cotton = order true. Stretch = order true or down, never up.

If Levi's Don't Work for You: Denim Brands I Rate

Levi's are brilliant, but no single brand suits every body. If you've tried them and the proportions just aren't right, these are the names I send clients to across every budget.

High Street

  • Weekday — the denim-led label in the H&M family. Genuinely interesting cuts, properly heavy fabrics, and prices that won't sting. Their wider, vintage-inspired fits are excellent value.

  • Gap — quietly one of the most consistent fits on the high street. Their straight and slim jeans are reliable, and the sizing barely shifts season to season, which I love.

Independent & Boutique

  • Nudie Jeans — the Swedish raw-denim specialists. Organic cotton, free repairs for life, and a fit guide that's actually useful. If you want denim with a conscience and serious longevity, start here.

  • Hiut Denim Co. — made in Cardigan, Wales, by a small team obsessed with doing one thing well. Premium, made-to-last jeans with proper heritage and a story worth supporting.

  • Edwin — Japanese denim craftsmanship with cuts that flatter without being flashy. Their tapered fits are some of the best out there.

Designer & Luxury

  • Acne Studios — Scandinavian, sharp, and the cut to beat if you want a modern slim or tapered silhouette. Pricey, but the fit and finish justify it.

  • Jacob Cohën — Italian luxury denim with hand-finished detailing. These are the jeans you wear with a blazer and good shoes. An indulgence, but a beautiful one.

The Sizing Problem No One Talks About

Here's the real frustration: everything I've just told you about Levi's only applies to Levi's. The moment you move to Nudie, or Gap, or Acne, the numbers shift again. A 32 in one brand is a 33 in another and a 31 in a third. It's why so many men end up with a drawer of jeans that nearly fit, and a stack of return labels.

That's exactly the problem Tellar was built to solve.

The Bottom Line

Levi's sizing isn't actually complicated once you know the rules: the waist number is your body, the three-digit code is the fit, and the fabric tells you whether to size down or stay true. Nail those three and you'll buy right far more often than you buy wrong.

And for everything else — every brand that isn't Levi's, with its own quirks and its own numbers — let Tellar do the maths. Get the fit right, look after your denim with a cold wash and a line dry, and a good pair of jeans will outlast half your wardrobe. Trust me, I've learned the hard way so you don't have to.
