What Is Sizing Like at Levi's? A Stylist's Honest Guide to Getting the Right Fit

Levi's sizing is largely true to size — but the catch is that they use their own numerical system based on your waist and inseam measurements in inches, not the UK dress sizing you're used to, which catches almost everyone out the first time. I'll be honest: I confidently ordered a pair of 501s based on my "usual size" many years ago, completely ignored the waist measurement chart, and was baffled when they wouldn't do up. Once you understand how the system works — and know which cuts fit generously versus snugly — Levi's actually becomes one of the more reliable denim brands out there.

First: The Sizing System Explained

Unlike most UK clothing brands that size in numbers (8, 10, 12 etc.), Levi's label their jeans by waist size and inside leg in inches — so you'll see something like W28 L30. This is your actual body measurement, not an abstract dress size. It sounds more precise, and in theory it is, but it requires you to know your measurements rather than your high-street label size.

Here's a rough UK dress size to Levi's waist size conversion to get you started — though I always recommend measuring yourself properly rather than relying on this table alone, as it can vary by cut:

UK Dress SizeLevi's Waist (approx.)Inside Leg (common lengths)UK 6W2428" / 30" / 32"UK 8W25–W2628" / 30" / 32"UK 10W27–W2828" / 30" / 32"UK 12W28–W2928" / 30" / 32"UK 14W30–W3128" / 30" / 32"UK 16W32–W3328" / 30" / 32"UK 18W34–W3528" / 30" / 32"UK 20W36–W3828" / 30" / 32"

Stylist tip: Always measure your natural waist (where you bend to the side) rather than where you normally wear your jeans. For high-rise Levi's styles like the Ribcage, this is especially important — they sit much higher than you might expect.

Does Levi's Run Small, Large, or True to Size?

It genuinely depends on the cut — and this is where people get confused. Levi's offers radically different fits across their range, and what's true to size in one style might run snug in another. Here's my honest breakdown by style:

  • 501 Original — The iconic one. Mostly 100% cotton with minimal stretch, so they're stiff initially and will feel snug until broken in. Generally true to size, but if you're curvier or carry more through the hips and thighs, size up. The waist can feel generous while the hips and thighs feel tight — this is intentional, they're designed to stretch and mould to your shape over time.

  • 501 '90s Straight — Slightly more relaxed through the hip and thigh than the original. Still rigid cotton so no give initially. Marie Claire's editor-in-chief recommends sizing up if you're curvy, and I'd echo that. Between sizes? Go up.

  • 721 High Rise Skinny — This is Levi's most consistent and forgiving style. True to size reliably, with a bit of stretch built in. A great starting point if you're new to the brand.

  • Ribcage Straight / Wide Leg — The highest rise Levi's has ever done — we're talking sitting right at the belly button. True to size in the waist, but be prepared for how high it actually sits. Brilliant for creating a waist-defining, leg-lengthening silhouette. Who What Wear editors unanimously love this style, and so do I.

  • Wedgie Fit — Snug through the top block (waist, seat and thighs) with a more relaxed leg. Because many versions are 100% non-stretch cotton, you'll likely need to size up. Gives a brilliant lifted rear-end effect that vintage denim lovers will recognise.

  • Baggy / Low Loose — More forgiving. True to size, sometimes a touch roomy — which is the whole point. If you want a more fitted look in a baggy style, size down.

  • 311 / 312 Shaping Skinny — These have a built-in tummy-smoothing panel and more stretch than the heritage styles. Generally true to size and very comfortable from the off.

The Cotton Problem (and Why It Matters)

A huge amount of Levi's range — particularly the 501 heritage styles — is made from rigid 100% cotton denim with very little to no elastane. This means they won't stretch the way a high street jean from Zara or Mango would. The upside is they look incredible, develop great character with wear, and last for years. The downside is that first wear can feel genuinely uncomfortable — they require breaking in.

The golden rule: if a pair feels uncomfortably tight when you first put them on but does up without real struggle, they'll likely loosen to a perfect fit. If you genuinely can't do them up — or can't sit down — that's a size, not a break-in issue.

Styles with some elastane content (the 721, the 311 Shaping range, and some of the newer relaxed fits) are much more immediately wearable and forgiving.

Petite, Tall and Plus-Size Options

Post Image

Levi's offer three inseam lengths across most styles: 28" (short), 30" (regular), and 32" (long). If you're petite, the 28" length works beautifully without needing alterations in many cases. They don't have a separate petite range as such — it's all managed through leg length, which actually gives you more control. For plus sizing, Levi's go up to around W44 across most styles, and their shapewear-infused 300 series (designed for curves) has been well-received for fit and flattery.

My Practical Advice Before You Order

Get your tape measure out. Seriously — measure your actual waist and hips and use those measurements against the Levi's size chart rather than converting from your dress size. Levi's themselves recommend measuring your natural waist for high-rise styles, and adding an inch to your waist measurement if you prefer your jeans to sit lower on the hip. And one more thing — wash in cold water only and air dry wherever possible. Even pre-shrunk Levi's can shrink a little in a hot wash, which nobody wants to discover after they've already nailed the fit.

Where to Shop If Levi's Isn't Quite Working for You

Levi's is genuinely brilliant but it's not the only denim game in town. Depending on what you're after, here are my recommendations across budget levels:

High Street & Mid-Range

  • The Gap — Levi's' closest spiritual sibling on the high street. Denim is their heartland, sizing is reliable, and they do excellent straight-leg and wide-leg styles in true UK sizes.

  • Zara — Constantly refreshing their denim range with on-trend cuts. Good stretch options for those who find rigid cotton too unforgiving. Sizing can be on the smaller side so check reviews per style.

  • Mango — Underrated for denim. Their straight-leg and barrel-leg styles have been brilliant recently, and sizing is fairly consistent. A good step up from fast fashion quality without the premium price tag.

  • River Island — Excellent for affordable denim in a wide range of fits, including curvy and wide-fit options. Good for those finding Levi's hip and thigh sizing limiting.

  • ASOS — Huge range including their own Hourglass and Petite denim lines. If your measurements don't land neatly in a standard Levi's fit, ASOS is where to look.

  • Urban Outfitters — Great for vintage-inspired styles that scratch the same itch as Levi's 501s and '90s straights. BDG denim in particular has a strong following.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — Has genuinely transformed its denim offering in recent years. Their Curve Love range is brilliant for curvier figures, with extra room through the hip and thigh — exactly what Levi's sometimes lacks.

Premium

  • Citizens of Humanity — Considered the gold standard of premium denim. Superb quality, excellent fit, and sizing that's well-documented and consistent. Worth every penny if you invest in one premium denim piece.

  • Paige — Known for their incredibly flattering cuts and luxuriously soft stretch denim. A brilliant option if you love the Levi's aesthetic but want more immediate comfort and a more forgiving fit through the hips.

  • Calvin Klein — Heritage denim credentials to rival Levi's, with generally more consistent and reliable sizing. The 90s straight and high-rise styles are particularly good.

Luxury & Designer

  • Agolde — The LA denim brand that fashion editors reach for when they want Levi's-adjacent cool but at a couture-adjacent quality level. Their 90s Pinch Waist and Riley styles are exceptional.

  • Frame — French-inspired luxury denim with immaculate tailoring. Sizing runs true and their Le High Straight has been a wardrobe staple for stylists for years.

Two Left-Field Picks I Rate Highly

  • Nudie Jeans — A Swedish ethical denim brand with completely transparent sizing guides, repairability built into their model, and genuinely excellent rigid denim construction for Levi's devotees who want something a little different. Their High Black Rose and Lean Dean styles have a cult following for good reason.

  • Monkee Genes — A brilliant British ethical denim brand making sustainable jeans right here in the UK. Under-the-radar, independently owned, and they produce genuinely well-fitting jeans in a range of styles with sizing that's reliable and clearly documented. A proper find for the sustainably-minded denim lover.
