What Is Sizing Like at Loewe?

Loewe sizing runs broadly true to European size, but the brand's deliberate play with exaggerated silhouettes, sculptural cuts, and relaxed tailoring means you genuinely need to understand how each garment is intended to fit before you commit — and at these prices, getting it wrong stings.

I'll be honest: I've had a complicated relationship with Loewe. I once fell completely in love with one of their puzzle-piece knit tops, ordered what I thought was my usual size, and spent a good ten minutes convincing myself the boxy, slightly overwhelming proportions were "the look." They weren't — on me, anyway. The second time around, I did my homework, understood how the piece was cut, and sized down. Transformative. That's the Loewe lesson right there.

How Loewe Sizes Work: The Basics

Loewe is a Spanish luxury house — now firmly under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson — and like most European designers, their sizing follows the EU scale (34 through to 44 for women's ready-to-wear). That puts them in line with other Continental luxury labels, so if you already know your EU size from shopping at, say, Max Mara or Loro Piana, you've got a decent starting point.

Generally speaking:

  • Ready-to-wear sits true to European size for most structured pieces

  • Knitwear tends to be intentionally roomy — oversized is often by design, not by accident

  • Tailored coats and blazers are often cut with a relaxed, boxy silhouette, so sizing down is sometimes appropriate

  • Dresses and separates can vary significantly by style — always check the model measurements in product notes where available

  • Shoes generally run true to European size

Note: These measurements are a guide. Always refer to the individual product's size notes on the Loewe website, as fit varies considerably by silhouette and collection.

Loewe Knitwear: Do You Size Down?

Here's where things get interesting — and where I see the most confusion. Jonathan Anderson's Loewe is famous for its sculptural, artistic knitwear. Those chunky anagram jumpers, the pixel intarsia pieces, the cropped open-back styles — they are not designed to be snug. They're supposed to have weight, texture, and dimension. Wearing them too big, however, tips from artistic into shapeless.

My advice: if you're between sizes in Loewe knitwear, size down one. If you're firmly in a size, trust your EU equivalent. Most of their knit pieces are designed with substantial positive ease already built in — you don't need to add more.

Loewe Tailoring & Outerwear

The coats are what I'd save up for if I could only have one Loewe piece. The outerwear tends to run with a relaxed, wide-shouldered silhouette — think structured but not fitted. For a more classic, polished result, sizing down one is often the move. If you prefer to layer underneath (which in the UK, let's face it, we all do), your true size is usually right.

Tailored trousers and suiting separates tend to be more precise and closer to standard EU sizing, with a contemporary high-waist or wide-leg cut. These I'd size as normal.

Loewe Dresses: Fit Varies by Style

Loewe's dresses range from floaty, deconstructed forms to sharp mini dresses and precise sheath styles. There is no single rule here — genuinely, you need to look at each piece individually. The brand provides detailed model measurements on their website, which I highly recommend using. If a model is 178cm with a 90cm hip and the dress is described as "relaxed," that tells you a lot.

As a rough guide:

  • Floaty / deconstructed dresses — true to size or size up if you're between sizes

  • Structured / mini dresses — true to size, sometimes size down if the silhouette is intentionally oversized

  • Wrap and asymmetric styles — these can be more forgiving; true to size usually works well

Loewe Shoes & Accessories

Loewe footwear — particularly the Gate mules and loafers — tends to run true to European size. I've found them consistent, with a slightly wider toe box than some Italian houses, which is a joy if you're not blessed with narrow feet. If you're between sizes, half-sizing up is the safer bet.

Bags and leather goods, of course, have no sizing concern — and Loewe's craftsmanship in this area is simply exceptional. If you're ever questioning a Puzzle bag investment, don't. Just do it.

My Tips for Buying Loewe Online

  • Always read the product description — Loewe's website often notes whether a style is "relaxed fit," "regular fit," or references the specific measurements of the model

  • Check your EU size first — convert your UK measurements before browsing to avoid confusion mid-checkout

  • For knitwear and outerwear, size down if you're between sizes

  • Use Selfridges, Net-a-Porter or Matches returns policies if buying in the UK — far easier to exchange through a retailer than via Loewe direct

  • Use Tellar's Store Size Lookup tool (more on that below) to match your exact measurements to Loewe sizing instantly

Budget-Friendly Alternatives to Loewe

Look, not every day is a Loewe day. Most days are decidedly not. But the aesthetic — that art-meets-craft, understated luxury, clean-line refinement — is absolutely something you can chase at other price points. Here's where I'd look:

High Street Picks:

  • COS — honestly the closest in spirit to Loewe's minimalist architectural DNA. Their knitwear and tailoring are brilliant, and sizing is consistent EU throughout. A real go-to.

  • Massimo Dutti — Spanish heritage, excellent fabric quality, clean tailoring. Their outerwear in particular captures that refined, unfussy Loewe-adjacent energy.

  • Mango — consistently strong on trend-forward basics with a European sensibility. Their leather-look trousers and relaxed blazers punch well above their price point.

  • Whistles — underrated. Their knitwear and structured trousers have real quality feel, and the brand doesn't shout. Very much the vibe.

  • Anthropologie — when they get it right, they absolutely get it right. Look at their artisan knitwear and linen pieces especially.

  • Me&Em — one of the best British brands for elevated everyday dressing. Relaxed tailoring, excellent fabric, and sizing that's genuinely reliable.

  • Jigsaw — a British classic with a consistent commitment to quality fabric and quiet, intelligent design. Their coats are exceptional for the price.

Premium Picks:

  • Reiss — sharp tailoring at a fraction of the designer price. Brilliant for the structured suiting and coat separates that Loewe fans tend to love.

  • Ted Baker — particularly strong on occasion-wear and knitwear with interesting texture detail and a more feminine interpretation of understated dressing.

Independent Picks (my left-field recommendations):

  • Paloma Wool — a Barcelona-based independent label with a fiercely artistic, experimental approach to knitwear and separates. Very much in the Loewe spirit, at a fraction of the cost. Genuinely brilliant and wildly creative.

  • Baserange — a Copenhagen-based label focused on beautifully simple, high-quality jersey and knitwear basics. Understated, thoughtful, and properly made. Exactly the sort of brand Loewe customers will love on a Tuesday.
