What is Sizing Like at Longchamp?

Longchamp sizes in French/European sizing and, in my experience, runs true to size for bags and accessories but slightly smaller than your usual UK size for ready-to-wear clothing — so if you're shopping their apparel line, I'd recommend sizing up by one.

Now, I know what most people are thinking when they hear Longchamp: Le Pliage. That iconic, foldable nylon tote that's basically had a permanent home on the Eurostar since 1993. But Longchamp does actually have a quietly chic ready-to-wear line that flies under the radar — and if you've ever ordered one of their shirts or trousers online without checking the sizing properly, you'll know the confusion that follows when your "medium" arrives looking like it was made for someone half your size. I've been there. A beautifully cut linen top, very wrong size, entirely my fault for ignoring the French size chart. Lesson learned.

Understanding Longchamp's Sizing System

Longchamp is a French heritage brand, founded in Paris in 1948, and like most French labels their clothing uses French/EU sizing. This runs numerically (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44) rather than the UK's 6–16 scale. Below is a full size conversion table to take the guesswork out of it:

Longchamp (FR/EU)UK SizeUS SizeApprox. Bust (cm)Approx. Waist (cm)34 (XS)6280–8260–6236 (S)8484–8664–6638 (M)10688–9068–7040 (L)12892–9472–7442 (XL)141096–9876–7844 (XXL)1612100–10280–82

My advice: always use your measurements rather than your usual UK size when ordering from Longchamp's clothing line. Their cut leans French — which means fitted through the shoulder and waist — and if you're between sizes, go up.

What About the Bags? (The Real Reason We're All Here)

For bags and leather goods — which is genuinely what most people come to Longchamp for — sizing is obviously a different conversation. The key decision is which Le Pliage format works for you:

  • Le Pliage XS / Small: Compact, brilliant for evenings or short commutes. Fits a purse, phone, keys — that's your lot.

  • Le Pliage Medium: The sweet spot. Comfortably fits a day's worth of essentials, a small laptop, and a book you'll pretend to read. This is the one I reach for most.

  • Le Pliage Large: Ideal for weekend trips, gym kit, or if you're the sort of person who carries their whole life around with them (no judgement — I am also this person).

  • Le Pliage XL: Basically a carry-on bag. Brilliant for flights. A chic alternative to lugging around a sports holdall.

Their cross-body and clutch styles have fixed dimensions listed clearly on the product pages, so always double-check the centimetre measurements before you buy rather than relying on the style name.

Longchamp's Ready-to-Wear: What to Know Before You Buy

Longchamp's clothing line is elegant and understated — think silk blouses, tailored trousers, and clean-lined knitwear. It's not hugely publicised, but genuinely lovely if you're after that effortless Parisian aesthetic. A few garment-specific notes:

  • Blouses and shirts: These are cut close to the body. If you're fuller in the bust or shoulders, size up — the slim French cut can be restrictive otherwise.

  • Trousers: The waist measurement is the most important thing to check here. The leg length comes up fairly standard but the waist can be unforgiving if you're between sizes.

  • Knitwear: Generally a little more forgiving — true to size, and the relaxed cuts in their jumpers and cardigans tend to work across a wider range of body shapes.

  • Scarves and accessories: One size, no stress. Their silk twill scarves are stunning and make brilliant gifts.

How Does Longchamp Compare to Similar Brands?

If you're a fan of Longchamp's aesthetic — that quietly confident, French-luxury-without-screaming-about-it energy — you'll likely also love some of these alternatives at different price points. I always think it's worth knowing where else you can get that vibe without always spending at the top of your budget.

High Street Picks:

  • Mango — Consistently strong on structured bags and Parisian-leaning tailoring. Great for budget-conscious Longchamp fans.

  • Cos — Minimalist, architectural cuts with excellent quality for the price. Sizing is similar to European labels, so size conversion rules apply here too.

  • Massimo Dutti — Possibly the closest in spirit to Longchamp's quiet luxury positioning. Beautifully made leather goods and polished separates.

  • Reiss — Brilliant for sharp tailoring and occasion dressing. Their bags punch well above their price point.

  • Me&Em — A favourite of mine for investing in pieces that genuinely last. Their knitwear and trousers are excellent quality and the sizing is clear and consistent.

  • Whistles — Elegant, grown-up, reliably flattering. A solid UK alternative for that understated European aesthetic.

  • Jigsaw — Perennially underrated. Their silk blouses and fine-knit separates are exactly the sort of pieces that sit alongside a Longchamp bag beautifully.

  • LK Bennett — For smart occasionwear and accessories, they're a reliable mid-market option with proper quality.

  • Ted Baker — Good for occasion-ready pieces with a bit more personality. Sizing runs true to UK standard.

Two Independent Picks I Love:

  • Rouje — A Paris-based independent label founded by Jeanne Damas. If you love Longchamp's French aesthetic but want something with a bit more bohemian warmth, Rouje is exactly that. Their dresses and blouses are divine and the sizing is genuinely French (so the same conversion rules apply).

  • Albaray — A brilliant British independent brand focused on sustainable, considered design. Beautifully tailored pieces with clear, consistent UK sizing. A lovely counterpoint if you love Longchamp's polish but want to shop more consciously.
