What Is Sizing Like at Lyle & Scott?

Lyle & Scott runs broadly true to size, but with two big caveats: the golden-eagle "Vintage" line is cut slim and the women's pieces run a touch small, so for those I'd nudge you up a size. The black-eagle "Heritage" line and the outerwear are far more forgiving and sit true to your usual UK size. Get the logo right and you're halfway to getting the fit right — which is a sentence I never thought I'd type, but here we are.

I'll be honest with you from the off: Lyle & Scott is, at heart, a menswear and golf house. It's a 150-year-old Scottish knitwear name, and the women's offering is the smaller, more casual sibling — lots of polos, sweats, knit and the odd jacket rather than a full ready-to-wear wardrobe. So a fair few of my clients end up buying across the men's range too, which makes knowing the fit quirks doubly useful.

My one genuine Lyle & Scott disaster

Years ago I bought myself one of the classic golden-eagle polos in what I assumed was my safe, sensible size. I wear it once, wash it warm because I wasn't paying attention, and the thing comes out fitting like it belongs to a much smaller, much sportier version of me. Two mistakes in one go: I'd ignored the slim Vintage cut and I'd cooked the cotton. Lesson learned, and now it's the first thing I tell anyone shopping the brand — read the eagle, respect the wash label.

The quick fit verdict by eagle

  • Golden eagle (Vintage): slim, tapered fit. If you like a bit of room or you're between sizes, size up one.

  • Black eagle (Heritage): regular, relaxed fit. Stick to your usual size.

  • Women's range overall: tends to come up slightly small, especially on the Vintage and golf-leaning styles — worth bearing in mind before you commit.

How it fits, category by category

Here's where it gets useful, because the fit genuinely shifts depending on what you're buying.

  • Polos & tops: the signature piece. Vintage polos are trim through the body and shoulder, so if you want anything other than a close fit, go up. Heritage tops are roomier and true to size.

  • Knitwear: mostly a regular fit — crew necks, lambswool, the cosy stuff. It's lovely quality but it will shrink if you wash it hot, so cold wash and reshape flat. Buy true to size and protect it.

  • Sweats & hoodies: casual and generous, true to size. These are the easiest pieces to get right blind.

  • Outerwear & jackets: true to size, but think about layers. If you'll wear a chunky jumper underneath, size up; for a sleeker line, stay put.

  • Trousers & shorts: follow regular high-street sizing, with the odd slim seasonal release. Check the specific garment rather than trusting your last purchase.

For reference, the women's range runs roughly XS to XL, where a UK 12 lines up with a US 8 and an EU 40 — but with the small-fit tendency, that XS–XL band is worth double-checking against a tape measure rather than guessing.

Stop guessing your size

If Lyle & Scott doesn't quite work for you

Maybe the women's range is too narrow for what you need, or you simply love the heritage-preppy, golf-club-adjacent look and want more options. Here's where I'd send you instead.

Best high street alternatives

Post Image

  • Fred Perry — the obvious spiritual sibling. British sportswear heritage, brilliant polos, and a women's range that's genuinely thought-through. Runs slim, so size up like you would on Vintage Lyle & Scott.

  • GANT — American preppy done properly. Lovely rugby shirts, knitwear and shirting, and it fits true to size with a slightly relaxed cut.

  • Tommy Hilfiger — for the polos, cable knits and that clean, sporty-preppy energy. True to size, very consistent.

  • Crew Clothing — the British, nautical-leaning casual answer. Great for breton tops, rugby shirts and weekend knitwear. Generous, forgiving fit.

  • Jack Wills — university-heritage preppy with a properly developed womenswear line. Hoodies, joggers and knits that scratch exactly the same itch.

  • Uniqlo — when you just want the knit basics without the logo. Outstanding lambswool and merino at the price, fits true to size.

  • Boden — if you want the preppy palette with a bit more colour and print. Classic British casual, reliably true to size.

Premium picks worth the spend

  • Pringle of Scotland — the other great Scottish knitwear name, and the most authentic heritage step-up there is. The argyle and twinsets are exquisite. Tailored fit, so consider sizing up.

  • Polo Ralph Lauren — the global gold standard for preppy. Investment pieces that last decades. The women's cut is fairly slim, so try before you commit.

Two independent gems I love

  • Navygrey — a small British knitwear label built around a handful of perfect, no-logo jumpers in beautiful merino. Quietly brilliant, and the antidote to fast fashion. Relaxed, true-to-size fit.

  • &Daughter — independent British-Irish knitwear rooted in traditional fishing-gansey craft. Proper heritage substance with a modern, easy line. Generous fit — take your usual size.

My honest bottom line

Lyle & Scott is a quality heritage brand that rewards you for knowing its quirks. Check the eagle, size up on Vintage and the women's golf-leaning styles, treat the knitwear gently in the wash, and you'll get years out of it. If the women's range feels limiting, Fred Perry and GANT will get you the closest look — and if you want to stop second-guessing every order, that's exactly what Tellar is for.
