What Is Sizing Like at Madewell clothing?

Madewell generally runs true to size, with denim you can order with real confidence, but the tops and tees skew slightly roomy and the whole range is built on US numerical sizing — so as a UK shopper, you can't just grab your usual high-street size and hope. I've fitted clients in Madewell for years, and the short version is this: trust the jeans, size down in the casual tops if you like things neat, and never, ever order a UK 12 expecting it to come back as a UK 12. Let me talk you through exactly how it fits.

The denim is the bit that gets it right

Madewell built its name on denim, and honestly, it earns the reputation. The jeans are consistent in a way a lot of brands simply aren't — pick your size, and pair after pair lands the same. A few things worth knowing before you commit:

  • True to size on stretch styles. The everyday stretch denim (the Roadtripper, most Perfect Vintage washes) fits as labelled and gives about half an inch through the day before bouncing back in the wash.

  • Size up on the rigid, non-stretch washes. The 100% cotton, vintage-feel pairs run snug and are meant to break in. Madewell flags this on the product page — believe them.

  • Size down on the slouchy, low-slung cuts. Anything described as relaxed or baggy is cut generously on purpose, so go a size smaller if you want it closer to the body.

  • Curvy vs Classic matters. The Curvy line adds roughly two inches through the hip and thigh with a higher rise — a genuine fix if your waist-to-hip gap is over ten inches, not just a marketing label.

They also cut Petite, Tall and Taller inseams across most styles, which is where Madewell quietly beats a lot of UK denim brands. If you're 5'3" or under and forever turning up hems, the Petite inseam is worth the order alone.

Tops, tees and dresses run a touch generous

This is the category that catches people out. Madewell's tees, sweatshirts and easy knits lean oversized even when the label says true to size — that lived-in, slightly slouchy feel is the house aesthetic. If you like a clean line:

  • Size down in jersey tees and sweats if you want them fitted rather than relaxed.

  • Stay true to size in dresses and structured shirting — these are cut closer and behave themselves.

  • Mind the shoulders on outerwear, which is often drapey and roomy by design rather than by accident.

The UK sizing catch nobody warns you about

Madewell lists everything in US sizes, full stop. The numerical denim sizing is a waist measurement in inches (23 to 33, then 14W upwards), and the letter sizing for tops doesn't map neatly onto our UK 8-10-12 either. Madewell ships to the UK via its international partner ESW, with duties and flat-rate delivery calculated at checkout — so there's no easy in-store try-on to fall back on. Getting the size right before you order is the whole game.

A quick confession from my own wardrobe

Post Image

My first Madewell order was a cautionary tale. I ordered a rigid Perfect Vintage jean in what I thought was my size, ignored the "sizes up small, will break in" note because I knew better (I did not), and spent a fortnight doing the dreaded lie-down-to-zip routine before admitting defeat. Two weeks later they'd moulded to me and became the best jeans I owned — but I learned the hard way that Madewell's fit notes aren't filler. The win? A black-rinse Kick-Out Crop in the right size first time, which I've since recommended to half my clients. Read the notes, trust the data, skip the drama.

If you love Madewell, you'll love these

Madewell's whole appeal is elevated, denim-led American ease — so here's where I'd send you for the same feeling across every price point.

On the high street:

  • Levi's — the original denim house; the closest true-to-size match for that broken-in Madewell jean, at a friendlier price.

  • Gap — American casual done well: easy tees, relaxed denim and that same off-duty wardrobe-staple feel.

  • Uniqlo — unbeatable for reliable, true-to-size quality basics to layer under the denim.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — quietly brilliant denim now, with a relaxed-cool aesthetic that genuinely mirrors Madewell.

  • COS — for the minimalist, elevated-basic side of the look, beautifully cut.

  • Mango — trend-led denim and tees that punch well above their price.

  • Hush — British, soft, easy and effortless; the off-duty Madewell mood in UK sizing.

Premium picks:

  • AGOLDE — cult premium denim with the same vintage-modern attitude, only sharper.

  • Sézane — French effortless: Parisian basics and denim with real soul.

  • Reiss — when you want the casual silhouette but in a more polished, grown-up fabric.

Luxury & designer:

  • Totême — Scandi minimalism and some of the best denim in the business; the investment version of this whole aesthetic.

  • Ralph Lauren — American heritage at its most refined, for the elevated-casual end of your wardrobe.

And two off the beaten track:

  • Kotn — an independent label doing ethically made Egyptian-cotton basics that sit right in Madewell's quality-essentials niche.

  • Lucy & Yak — a brilliant British independent for playful, ethical denim, dungarees and cords with proper personality.
