What Is Sizing Like at Maje?

Maje runs small — this is the key thing you need to know before you buy. As a French label, Maje uses EU sizing, and like most Parisian brands, the cuts are slim, tailored close to the body, and designed with a French frame in mind. As a general rule, UK shoppers should size up one from their usual UK size when shopping at Maje.

I learnt this the hard way, naturally. I ordered a Maje wrap dress in what I thought was my size, convinced myself it would "stretch in," and stood in my kitchen doing a sort of half-squat to prove it fitted. It did not fit. The moment I exchanged for one size up, it was everything — nipped waist, perfect length, exactly the effortless Parisian look I'd been chasing. Maje is genuinely wonderful, but only when you've got the size right.

The Core Sizing Rule: Size Up One

The single most consistent piece of advice across customer reviews, style forums, and fashion editors is this: if you're a UK 10, start with a Maje 38 (their EU 38 equates to a UK 12 in their scale). If you're usually a UK 8, go for a 36. The brand's silhouettes — particularly in dresses, skirts, and fitted tops — are intentionally close-fitting and leave very little room for going in between sizes.

There are a few exceptions to this:

  • Knitwear — tends to have more ease and is generally true to EU size

  • Oversized blazers and coats — cut with deliberate volume, so your true EU size or even sizing down is often fine

  • Stretchy jersey pieces — these have more give, so true EU size often works well

  • Fitted dresses and skirts — always size up one, no question

Remember: most UK shoppers find they need the EU size that equates to one UK size larger than their usual. When in doubt, size up and use Tellar's Store Size Lookup tool (below) to get your precise fit before you buy.

Maje Dresses: The Brand's Signature Piece

Dresses are where Maje really shines — and also where the sizing confusion causes the most heartbreak. Whether it's their iconic floral minis, the sleek bodycon styles or the more relaxed midi cuts that pop up each season, these are designed to sit close to the body and show off your shape. That is not a complaint. It's a deliberate, very French design choice.

For fitted and wrap dresses, size up without hesitation. For their more relaxed, flowy dress styles — particularly the boho-influenced pieces with elasticated waists — your true EU size often works perfectly. Always check whether the fabric has any stretch content listed in the product details; even a small percentage of elastane makes a difference.

One thing I genuinely love about Maje dresses: the lengths are usually excellent for women of average height (around 5'5"–5'7"). If you're taller, be aware that minis can become micro-minis, and midis may sit slightly above the knee. If you're petite, you're probably in luck — their lengths tend to work brilliantly.

Maje Tops & Knitwear

Maje's tops are a mixed bag when it comes to sizing. Fitted blouses and structured tops follow the same rule as dresses — size up. Their knitwear, however, is slightly more generous in the cut and closer to a true EU fit. I've found their knit styles sit best when sized as normal, with that soft, slightly relaxed drape that reads very effortlessly Parisian.

Their leather and faux-leather tops — a house signature — tend to be quite structured. Size up here too. You don't want to be fighting with a leather top every time you put it on. Trust me on this one.

Maje Trousers & Skirts

Maje trousers are typically cut slim through the hip and thigh. If you're curvy or carry weight in your hips and thighs, I'd strongly recommend sizing up two, not just one, and being led by your hip measurement rather than your waist. Their waistbands often have a small amount of give, which helps, but the cut through the seat is not generous.

Skirts — particularly their mini and pencil styles — follow the same logic. Size up one as standard. Their pleated midi skirts tend to have a little more room and can often be bought in your true EU size.

Maje Outerwear & Leather Jackets

This is where Maje really earns its keep for me. Their leather jackets are genuinely stunning — a cropped, slightly boxy silhouette that looks brilliant over everything from a silk slip dress to straight-leg jeans. For their jackets and coats, the fit is usually more relaxed by design. Your true EU size tends to work well here, and if you like a slightly oversized look (very current), you can even size up for maximum impact.

Their wool-blend coats follow a similar pattern — more relaxed, more generous, and very much true to EU size. A rare Maje category where you don't need to agonise.

A Quick Word on Maje's Size Range

One thing worth noting: Maje's size range typically runs from EU 34 to EU 44 (roughly UK 6–16), with some styles stopping at EU 42. If you're a UK 16 or above, availability can be limited, which is frustrating for a brand at this price point. It's worth checking before you fall in love with something specific. The brand has been gradually extending its range, so there's hope — but it's not consistent across all styles yet.

Style Alternatives: That Parisian Chic Look at Every Budget

Maje occupies a gorgeous sweet spot — not quite high street, not full luxury. But if you love that effortless Parisian femininity and want to explore other options (or supplement your Maje wardrobe without quite the same hit to the bank account), here's where I'd go:

High Street Picks:

  • Zara — the closest high-street equivalent to Maje's aesthetic, full stop. Their mini dresses, tailored pieces, and leather jackets frequently capture that same sharp Parisian energy. Sizing runs small here too, so the same size-up logic applies.

  • French Connection — consistently underrated on the UK high street. Their fitted dresses and tailored separates have a genuine sophistication that sits well next to Maje. Great for occasion dressing too.

  • Warehouse — brilliant for affordable versions of the fitted mini dress and elevated workwear separates that Maje does so well. A go-to for trend-forward pieces at a sensible price.

  • Phase Eight — particularly strong for the more polished, occasion-ready side of the Maje customer's wardrobe. Their floral midi dresses and tailored jackets are excellent quality for the price.

  • All Saints — for the leather jacket specifically, All Saints is the high-street answer to Maje's outerwear. Excellent quality, brilliant cuts, and a rock-meets-refined aesthetic that works.

  • Mint Velvet — a brilliant British brand for relaxed, feminine dressing with a grown-up feel. Their knitwear and printed dresses are a natural step-across for the Maje woman.

  • Oliver Bonas — often overlooked but genuinely lovely for the more playful, print-led side of Maje's DNA. Their jewellery-adjacent aesthetic makes them feel like a boutique, not a chain.

Premium Pick:

  • LK Bennett — for the polished, Parisian-leaning end of the Maje aesthetic, LK Bennett is a natural step up. Beautifully cut dresses and coats, excellent fabric quality, and a real sense of occasion dressing done properly.

  • Claudie Pierlot — worth a mention because it's actually a sister brand to Maje (both sit under the SMCP group), but with a slightly more elevated, grown-up feel. If you love Maje but want something a touch more refined, Claudie Pierlot is your next stop.

Independent Picks — My Left-Field Recommendations:

  • Rouje — a Paris-based independent label founded by influencer Jeanne Damas, and arguably the most authentically French brand you can buy right now. Romantic floral dresses, slim-cut trousers, and a vintage-meets-modern sensibility that's a perfect companion to Maje. Genuinely hard to fault.

  • Ba&sh — another French independent label that flies slightly under the radar in the UK but absolutely shouldn't. Beautifully feminine, consistently on-trend, and with a relaxed confidence to the cut that feels genuinely Parisian rather than trying to be. Sizing is similar to Maje — size up one.
