Marks & Spencer sizing runs true to standard UK sizes across most of its ranges, but there are some important differences between their sub-labels — and knowing which range you're buying from makes all the difference. Here's the full picture before you shop.

M&S is one of those brands that practically every woman in the UK has an opinion about — and most of them involve a story. My mum swears by their knitwear. My best friend won't wear anything else for workwear. And I personally had a minor crisis last year when the Per Una blouse I'd bought in my usual size fit completely differently to the Autograph blazer I'd bought in the same size, same trip. That experience sent me down a proper M&S sizing rabbit hole, and what I found was actually fascinating. They're not inconsistent — they're just a brand with several quite distinct sub-ranges, each with its own fit philosophy. Once you understand that, everything clicks.

The Short Answer on M&S Sizing

M&S follows standard UK sizing, and for the most part their pieces run true to size. However, the brand operates across multiple distinct ranges — mainline, Autograph, Per Una, Curve, and more — and each has slightly different fit characteristics. If you've ever found M&S inconsistent, that's almost certainly why. You weren't imagining it.

The other big thing to know: M&S offers one of the most genuinely inclusive size ranges on the high street, running from a UK 6 through to a UK 28 across most categories, with dedicated Petite (for women under 5'3") and Plus ranges. This is genuinely brilliant and sets them apart from many competitors.

💡 Ella's tip: M&S also does a Short leg (28"), Regular leg (30"), and Long leg (32") option across most of their trousers and jeans. If you've ever had to have M&S trousers taken up, switching to their Short leg length is genuinely life-changing. I wish someone had told me sooner.

The Different M&S Ranges — And How They Fit

This is where it gets interesting. M&S isn't one brand — it's essentially several brands under one roof. Here's how each one fits:

  • Mainline / everyday range: True to size. Their jersey pieces, casual trousers, and knitwear are cut to standard UK sizing with a comfortable, relaxed allowance. If you're new to M&S, start here.

  • Autograph: This is their premium range and it fits beautifully — often with slightly more structured tailoring and a more refined cut. Generally true to size, but their blazers and tailored trousers can come up slightly slim through the shoulders. If in doubt, go up.

  • Per Una: The most variable of the ranges in my experience. Sizing here can run slightly large on some styles. I'd always check the individual garment measurements rather than relying on your usual size.

  • Curve (Plus): Dedicated range cut with a fuller bust and hip in mind — not just scaled-up mainline pieces. The fit is genuinely considered, which makes a real difference.

  • Petite: For women under 5'3". Shortened hemlines, adjusted proportions throughout — it's one of the best petite ranges on the high street.

  • Lingerie & bras: M&S lingerie runs true to size and their bra fitting is legendary for good reason. This is still one of the best places in the UK to get properly fitted.

Across the whole M&S range, here's what I've found from years of styling and personal experience:

  • Knitwear: Excellent. One of M&S's strongest categories — true to size, well-shaped, and they wash brilliantly. Their cashmere mix jumpers in particular are exceptional value.

  • Tailoring (trousers, blazers, suits): True to size in mainline, but the Autograph tailoring can be slightly narrow across the back. Worth trying in store first if you can.

  • Jeans & denim: Very consistent. Their Sienna, Lily, and Orla fits are well worth knowing — each cuts differently, so check the shape guide rather than just the number.

  • Dresses: Generally true to size. Their shirt dresses and wrap styles are particularly well-proportioned for hourglass shapes.

  • Coats & jackets: True to size or a touch generous. Their winter coats are cut to allow a layer underneath, which is actually very sensible.

  • Swimwear: True to size and an absolute highlight — M&S swimwear is consistently praised by women of all sizes for fit, coverage, and longevity.

  • Nightwear & pyjamas: Generous in cut — you could comfortably go down a size in their pyjama sets.

💡 Stylist note: M&S's Autograph range is genuinely one of the most underrated collections on the British high street. The fabrics are excellent, the cuts are considered, and the price point for what you're getting is very fair. If you've not explored it recently, it's worth a look — it's a far cry from the M&S of ten years ago.

M&S for Different Body Shapes

One of the things that genuinely impresses me about M&S is how broadly they cater. The dedicated Petite and Curve ranges mean you're not just buying a scaled version of the mainline — the proportions are actually adjusted. For taller women, they have a Long leg option but fewer dedicated tall styles in their clothing range, which is the one gap I'd call out. If you're over 5'9", you may find some dresses and tops sit shorter than you'd like in the mainline — the Autograph range tends to have a slightly longer hem allowance across the board.

Best Alternatives to M&S — By Budget

M&S is brilliant, but it's not the only option. Here are the brands I'd genuinely recommend as alternatives, picked for their comparable quality, reliable sizing, and overall wearability:

HIGH STREET ALTERNATIVES

  • Boden — Arguably M&S's closest rival for British classics done well. Excellent on knitwear and print dresses, consistent sizing throughout, and their Tall and Petite options are excellent.

  • Whistles — A step up in design sophistication from M&S mainline. Their tailoring and workwear are particularly strong, and sizing is reliable and consistent.

  • Phase Eight — If you love M&S dresses and occasion wear, Phase Eight is your natural next port of call. Their fit-and-flare and wrap styles are brilliant, and sizing runs true throughout.

  • Hobbs — For the M&S Autograph customer wanting something slightly more elevated. Beautifully cut workwear and tailoring. Sizing is true to standard UK.

  • White Stuff — For the M&S customer who loves casual-smart dressing. Brilliant for knitwear, linen, and relaxed-fit trousers. Sizing is generous and comfortable.

  • Fat Face — A brilliant alternative for weekend and casual-smart dressing, particularly in knitwear and jersey. Runs true to size, great quality for the price.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — A wonderful M&S alternative for casual, relaxed pieces. Their linen and cotton ranges are exceptional, and their sizing is broad and inclusive.

  • Oliver Bonas — For the M&S customer who wants something with a bit more personality. Brilliant dresses and occasion pieces at a fair price point.

PREMIUM STEP-UP

  • Me&Em — Widely regarded as the best British brand for grown-up, intelligent dressing. If you love M&S Autograph but want something more directional, Me&Em is the natural evolution. Sizing is true to UK standard.

  • Mint Velvet — A premium high street brand that hits the sweet spot between occasion wear and everyday elegance. Great for workwear and smart casual. True to size throughout.

  • Reiss — For sharp tailoring and elevated basics. If you want to invest in a really well-cut blazer or trouser, Reiss is consistently excellent. Runs slightly slim — size up if between sizes.

INDEPENDENT & NICHE PICKS WORTH KNOWING

  • Toast — A cult British label that shares M&S's love of quality natural fabrics and understated, wearable design — but with a more poetic, independent spirit. Their linen, cotton, and wool pieces are absolutely beautiful, and the sizing is generous and inclusive. If you haven't discovered Toast yet, you're in for a treat.

  • Nobody's Child — A brilliant sustainable British brand that punches well above its price point. Their dresses and sets are designed with real bodies in mind, sizing is inclusive and runs true, and the print and fabric quality genuinely rivals brands charging three times the price. A brilliant discovery if you haven't found them yet.
