What Is Sizing Like at Maya Deluxe?

Maya Deluxe runs slightly small, particularly through the bust and waist of its fitted bodices, so if you sit between two sizes or carry a little more on top, sizing up is nearly always the safer call. I've styled dozens of women into Maya Deluxe pieces for weddings, christenings and black-tie dos, and the pattern is remarkably consistent: the skirts are generous and forgiving, but the bodice is where people come unstuck. Get your bust and waist measurement right and you'll genuinely look like you spent three times what you did.

How Maya Deluxe Sizing Actually Runs

Maya Deluxe is a Manchester-based occasionwear label known for hand-embellished sequins, soft tulle skirts and that romantic, vintage-boho feel. The catch is the construction. The bodices are usually cut in non-stretch fabric and lined, so there's very little give where you most need it. Here's what I tell my clients before they order:

  • Bust is the make-or-break measurement. Fitted and high-neck styles run snug across the chest and upper arms. A C cup and above should size up.

  • The waist is fitted, the skirt is forgiving. Most of the tulle and A-line styles skim the hips beautifully, so don't size up for your hips — size for the bodice.

  • Mind the zip. A recurring review theme is a back zip that's tricky to do up solo. If you're getting ready alone, factor that in.

  • Ranges matter. The Tall range is true to size and lovely for anyone 5'8"+, Petite is well-proportioned (though some styles nip at the ribs), and the Curve range is best sized up in the bodice.

My own Maya Deluxe lesson came the hard way. I ordered a sequin bodice maxi in my "usual" size for a friend's evening wedding, convinced I knew better. The skirt was a dream; the bodice would not zip past my shoulder blades. One frantic next-day reorder later, I went up a size and it was perfection. Lesson learned — and now I always tell people to take Maya Deluxe up on their own advice: they happily let you order a size up and a size down to try at home and return what doesn't work.

How to Get Your Fit Right First Time

Don't guess from a label. Measure your bust at the fullest point and your natural waist, then buy to the larger of the two if they fall in different sizes — it's far easier to take in a waist than to let out a sequinned bodice. For structured, boned or high-neck styles, lean towards the upper size. For floaty empire-line or bridesmaid pieces, your standard size usually behaves. And if you're petite, check the length from the shoulder rather than assuming a maxi will pool at your feet.

Where Else to Shop for Occasionwear

If Maya Deluxe isn't quite landing, or you want to compare before committing, these are the brands I send clients to for embellished, romantic occasion dresses — chosen because their cut and finish genuinely rival Maya's.

High street

  • Coast — the high-street occasionwear specialist. Beaded bodices and structured midis that hold their shape; sizing is reliable and a touch more generous than Maya's.

  • Phase Eight — brilliant for mother-of-the-bride and elegant guest dresses. Their fit is consistent and runs true, so a safe bet if Maya feels like a gamble.

  • Monsoon — the embellishment and sequin queen of the high street. Romantic, ornate and great value for a one-off event.

  • Hobbs — clean, tailored occasion dresses with a slightly more classic, structured silhouette. Lovely for a daytime wedding.

  • Whistles — modern, pared-back occasionwear for anyone who finds sequins a bit much. Slim through the body, so check measurements.

  • Mint Velvet — relaxed, contemporary glamour with a softer fit. Ideal if you want comfort without losing the polish.

  • Oasis — a quietly underrated source of pretty, affordable occasion pieces, with frequent floral and embellished drops.

Premium

  • Reiss — sleek, grown-up occasionwear with beautiful tailoring. Worth the step up for a dress you'll re-wear for years.

  • Ted Baker — bold prints and statement occasion dresses with a confident, fitted cut. Size up if you're between.

  • ME+EM — clever, flattering construction and considered fabrics; the kind of dress that does the hard work for you.

Luxury / designer

  • Needle & Thread — the gold standard for delicate embellishment and tulle. If you adore the Maya aesthetic but want the real, exquisite version, this is it.

  • Self-Portrait — sculptural lace and crystal-trimmed pieces that photograph beautifully. Investment occasionwear that looks editorial.

A couple off the beaten track

  • RIXO — the London indie loved for hand-painted prints and floaty, forgiving silhouettes. A gorgeous antidote if you want occasion without structure.

  • Sister Jane — a small, characterful London label doing whimsical, embellished pieces with real personality. Perfect when you don't want to turn up in the same dress as three other guests.
