What Is Sizing Like at Mint Velvet?

Mint Velvet sizes true to UK sizing and is one of the more straightforward brands to shop — if you’re a UK 12, you buy a 12, and it will almost certainly fit. The brand is designed with a deliberately relaxed, fluid silhouette in mind, which means there’s a welcome amount of ease built into most pieces. No guesswork, no agonising over whether to size up — which, as someone who has spent far too long in too many changing rooms, is genuinely refreshing.

A Quick Word on What Mint Velvet Actually Is

If you haven’t shopped Mint Velvet before, it sits in that sweet spot between high street and premium — quality fabrics, thoughtful design, and a relaxed boho-luxe aesthetic that works brilliantly for women who want to look polished without looking try-hard. Their palette leans into muted tones, warm neutrals, and earthy prints, and their knitwear in particular has an almost cult following. They size from a UK 6 through to a UK 20 (and occasionally 22 in selected styles), which is more inclusive than a lot of brands at this price point.

I’ve been recommending Mint Velvet to clients for years — particularly those navigating that shift away from fast fashion towards pieces that actually last. The sizing consistency across seasons is something I genuinely appreciate, too. You learn your size there and you keep it.

Mint Velvet Size Guide

Mint Velvet uses standard UK sizing. Here’s how it maps across to EU and US, along with approximate measurements:

UK SizeEU SizeUS SizeBust (cm)Waist (cm)Hips (cm)6342806287836484669110386887095124089274991442109678103164412100821071846141068811320481611294119

Stylist tip: Mint Velvet’s fit is designed with approximately 5–8cm of ease built into most garments — particularly dresses and tops. This is intentional; the brand’s aesthetic is relaxed and fluid, not skin-tight. If you prefer a more fitted look, some customers size down one, but I’d always check the individual garment measurements first rather than just defaulting to a size smaller.

Dresses & Occasionwear

Mint Velvet’s dresses are where I’d say the brand really earns its reputation. Midi lengths, flowing fabrics, beautiful print work — they are reliably flattering on a wide range of body shapes, which is exactly why I keep returning to them for clients. Sizing here is true to size across the board. The silhouettes are designed to skim rather than cling, so even if you’re between sizes, your standard UK size will work.

  • Wrap dresses: true to size; adjustable ties give a little flexibility at the waist

  • Slip and cami dresses: true to size; size up if you have a fuller bust or prefer more coverage

  • Shirt dresses: true to size and very generously cut — no need to size up here

  • Occasion midi dresses: true to size; the flowing fabric is forgiving across the hips

Knitwear

Mint Velvet’s knitwear is genuinely some of the best on the high street at this price point, and I say that with full conviction having tested a lot of it personally. Chunky knits, fine-gauge cardigans, cosy roll-necks — it’s a strong category for them. Sizing runs true to size in most styles, though a few of the oversized styles are intentionally cut very generously. I once bought an ‘oversized’ knit in my usual size and it nearly reached my knees. Brilliant, actually — I wore it as a dress with knee-high boots. But worth knowing.

  • Oversized knits: true to size gives a relaxed fit; size down if you want it to stay as a top rather than a smock

  • Fine-gauge cardigans and jumpers: run true to size

  • Roll-necks and fitted styles: true to size; check shoulder measurement if you’re narrow-shouldered

Trousers & Jeans

Post Image

This is where I’d say Mint Velvet is slightly less consistent, and it’s worth paying attention. Their fluid, wide-leg trousers (a signature of the brand) tend to run true to size and are cut with a relaxed, generous leg — brilliant. Their more tailored or slim-fit trouser styles, however, can run a little narrow in the leg and hip on some customers. My rule of thumb: if it’s described as ‘relaxed’ or ‘wide leg’, buy your size. If it’s ‘slim’ or ‘tapered’, check the hip measurement against your own before ordering.

  • Wide-leg and palazzo trousers: true to size, very generous through the leg

  • Slim and tapered styles: check hip measurement; consider sizing up if fuller through the hip

  • Denim: generally true to UK size, but check individual listings — some styles run slightly small in the waist

Tops & Blouses

Tops at Mint Velvet are reliably true to size and generally cut with that same generous ease. Their printed blouses and wrap tops are particularly good — the kind of thing that works for a client lunch and a weekend walk, which is exactly what the Mint Velvet woman wants. If you have a larger bust, you might find the button-through styles a touch snug across the chest; I’d go up one size and belt it at the waist if needed.

Outerwear & Jackets

Mint Velvet does a beautiful line in relaxed outerwear — longline coats, teddy fleeces, casual blazers. Their coats are cut to layer over knitwear comfortably, so sizing is true to your usual UK size even when you plan to layer underneath. Their blazers are more tailored in cut; if you’re between sizes or have broader shoulders, size up one.

My Honest Take on Mint Velvet

Mint Velvet is one of those brands that genuinely does what it says on the tin. The sizing is honest, the quality is solid for the price, and the aesthetic has a consistent, wearable point of view that a lot of brands at this level can’t quite manage. My only caveat is that if you’re petite, some of the midi lengths may feel very long — they do offer a petite range, so always filter for that first.

Brands Like Mint Velvet — Alternatives at Every Budget

Love the Mint Velvet vibe but want to explore further? Here are the brands I’d direct you to, from high street through to premium and a couple of brilliant independents:

High Street

  • Jigsaw — the closest brand in aesthetic terms. Relaxed, considered, beautifully made for the price, with a similar muted colour palette and quality fabric approach. A genuine alternative.

  • Anthropologie — bohemian prints, feminine silhouettes, and a very similar customer to Mint Velvet. The dress and knitwear offering in particular is strong.

  • White Stuff — relaxed, British, natural fabrics and a cheerful approach to print. More casual than Mint Velvet but a natural next stop for the same shopper.

  • Phase Eight — brilliant for occasionwear with a similar relaxed femininity. Their midi dresses and knitwear are consistently well-reviewed.

  • Hobbs — classic British with a slightly more tailored edge; great for workwear crossover pieces and a step up in polish from Mint Velvet.

  • Hush — relaxed, beautifully basics-led, and a real go-to for easy layering pieces. The knitwear rivals Mint Velvet at a similar price.

  • Boden — colour, print, and a very British sensibility. Their dresses and knitwear are frequently picked out by Grazia and Red magazine as strong alternatives at this tier.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — natural fabrics, relaxed cuts, and a loyal following for good reason. Particularly strong on outerwear and casual layering.

Premium

  • LK Bennett — when you want to step up the polish for an occasion. Beautiful dresses and smart separates; a natural next step from Mint Velvet for events.

  • Me&Em — British brand built around considered, grown-up dressing. Quality sits noticeably above Mint Velvet; a genuinely excellent choice for investment pieces.

Independent & Niche Picks

  • Wyse London — a London-based independent with a devoted following for its beautiful knitwear and relaxed, luxurious separates. Stripes, rich tones, cashmere blends — it is exactly what Mint Velvet fans reach for when they want to invest a little more. Small collections that sell out fast; absolutely worth bookmarking.

  • Brora — a Scottish luxury brand specialising in cashmere knitwear and classic British separates. If Mint Velvet is your everyday and you want a special treat version, Brora is it. Their sizing is true to UK and the quality is exceptional — pieces that genuinely last decades.
