What Is Sizing Like at Monot?
Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026
Monot runs snug and sculptural. The brand uses Italian sizing and builds almost everything around an internal, corset-style structure, so the honest answer is: most people should take their true size and only size up if they’re generous through the bust or hips. This isn’t a label that drapes forgivingly — it’s designed to hold you, mould to you and show off every line you’ve got. Get the size right and a Monot dress is one of the most flattering things you’ll ever put on. Get it wrong and you’ll feel it within five minutes of sitting down.
I’ve dressed clients in Monot for weddings, galas and one very memorable 40th, and I’ve learned the fit rules the hard way, so let me save you the returns drama.
So, does Monot run big or small?
Monot runs small to true-to-size, with the emphasis firmly on small once you factor in the cut. Eli Mizrahi’s Beirut-and-Paris label is known for slinky, body-conscious eveningwear — think halter gowns, strapless corset dresses, high slits and architectural cut-outs — and that silhouette is engineered to skim the body, not float over it. The structure does a lot of the work, which is wonderful when it fits and merciless when it doesn’t.
The other thing to know up front: Monot uses Italian sizing. So you’ll see IT 36, 38, 40, 42 rather than UK 8, 10, 12, 14. As a rough guide, an IT 38 sits around a UK 10 and an IT 40 around a UK 12 — but please don’t buy on that alone, because the cut matters far more than the number on the label here.
Where Monot actually fits (and where it catches people out)
Because so many pieces have built-in corsetry and boning, the bust is usually the deciding measurement, not the waist. I had a client — a 34DD — who fell for a strapless corset gown and we sized her on the bust, not her usual dress size. Spot on. That’s my biggest tip: with the structured styles, fit the fullest part of you and have the rest taken in.
Here’s where it tends to trip people up:
The bust on strapless and corset styles. There’s very little give in the boned bodice, so if you’re between sizes and busty, size up and nip the waist.
The hips on the column and slip silhouettes. These are cut close all the way down. Generous hips? Size to the hips, not the waist.
The fabric. Monot leans on heavyweight crepe and structured satin — gorgeous, but with limited stretch. Unlike a jersey gown, it won’t “relax” into you, so what you try on is what you get.
Length. The gowns run long and are designed for heels. Factor in a hem if you’re petite rather than sizing down to compensate.
My styling advice for nailing the fit

My own Monot lesson? I once ordered a corset mini a size up “to be safe” for an event and it gaped horribly across the back — the whole point of that boning is a close fit, and a too-big Monot just looks like it’s borrowed. Lesson learned: with this brand, snug is the brief.
Buy the structure, then tailor. A good seamstress can take a Monot in beautifully; letting one out is far harder. Always err towards the size that fits your widest measurement.
Mind your underwear. Many corset styles are built to be worn braless or with stick-ons — the bodice holds you. Try it as you’ll wear it.
Don’t panic at the Italian numbers. Match your measurements to the size, not the country on the tab.
If Monot is out of budget — or out of stock
Monot gowns sit comfortably in four figures, so if you love the slinky, sculptural look but want to spend less (or your size has sold out), here’s where I’d send you instead.
On the high street
Reiss — my first stop for polished, structured occasion dresses with that clean, expensive-looking finish.
Coast — the occasionwear specialist; brilliant for corseted bodices and column gowns at a fraction of the price.
Whistles — minimal, modern eveningwear with the same pared-back attitude Monot does so well.
Mango — criminally good satin slips and cut-out dresses; the value-for-money pick of the lot.
Ted Baker — structured, body-conscious cocktail dresses that hold their shape.
Hobbs — elegant, beautifully cut event dresses if you want grown-up rather than racy.
Phase Eight — reliable occasion gowns with built-in support, ideal for weddings.
ASOS — the EDITION line does genuinely chic corseted and cut-out gowns at proper budget prices.
Premium
Self-Portrait — if it’s the cut-out drama you’re after, this is the smart middle ground.
Solace London — sculptural, draped, body-skimming gowns that share Monot’s architectural DNA for considerably less.
Luxury & designer
16Arlington — slinky, sensual eveningwear if you want a designer alternative with the same after-dark confidence.
David Koma — for sharp, body-conscious cut-outs and that red-carpet edge.
Two independent finds worth knowing
House of CB — a London label that has practically made corseted body-con its signature; the closest thing to Monot’s held-in structure at a far gentler price.
Taller Marmo — an under-the-radar luxury name doing statement eveningwear with real presence, if you want to turn up in something nobody else is wearing.
