What Is Sizing Like at Monsoon?

Monsoon sizes true to UK standard, and for the most part you can shop your usual size with confidence — though a few quirks in specific categories are worth knowing before you buy. I've been dressing myself and my clients in Monsoon for years, and there's genuinely a lot to love here — but I've also had a few moments that caught me off guard. Let me walk you through exactly what to expect.
The Monsoon Sizing Overview
Monsoon runs UK sizes 6 to 22, with a dedicated Petite range and a Curve line that extends up to a size 26 on selected styles. That's actually a fairly generous size spread for a mid-market British brand, and something I really appreciate about them. The fit philosophy tends to sit in the relaxed-to-floaty camp — think bohemian shapes, empire waists, tiered skirts — rather than the ultra-structured tailoring you'd find at Reiss or Hobbs. That romantic, slightly-loose silhouette means the brand tends to be pretty forgiving across a range of body shapes.
That said, the fit isn't entirely consistent across every category. I'll break it down garment by garment below, because that's where the real detail lives.

Fit Breakdown by Garment Type
Dresses — True to Size, Generally Brilliant
This is Monsoon's strongest suit — pun fully intended. Their dresses are consistently their best-fitting pieces. Whether it's a tiered midi for a summer wedding or an embroidered occasion dress for a holiday, I've found the sizing runs bang on to UK standard. The floaty silhouettes mean there's natural ease built in, which works brilliantly for anyone between sizes. One client of mine — a size 14 on top and 16 on the bottom — has been buying Monsoon dresses for years without a single alteration. That's a win.
Petite range: Genuinely works. Shorter hemlines and adjusted proportions rather than just cropped versions of the main line.
Occasion dresses: True to size; if the dress is fitted at the bodice, go by your bust measurement.
Wrap and shirt styles: Generous through the chest — if you're fuller-busted, you may find your standard size fits perfectly without gaping.
Knitwear & Tops — Size Down if in Doubt
This is where Monsoon can surprise you. Their knitwear tends to run a touch generous — not dramatically so, but enough that I'd advise trying your usual size and the one below if you're between sizes. I once picked up a gorgeous boho-style jumper in a 10, and while I loved it, I could have sized down to an 8 for a more defined shape. It's not a dealbreaker — the relaxed fit is part of the aesthetic — but good to know going in.
Blouses and printed tops: true to size.
Knitwear: slightly relaxed — size down if you prefer a more fitted look.
Jersey tops: true to size with a comfortable, non-clingy fit.
Trousers & Skirts — Waistbands to Watch

The tiered skirts are divine and fit true to size with a pull-on waistband, so they're incredibly versatile. Tailored trousers, however, can sit more narrowly through the waist and hips — a couple of my clients have gone up one size here and had the waistband taken in, which I know is a faff but does happen. Always check the fabric content too: Monsoon's more structured trouser fabrics have less give than their floatier pieces.
Occasion & Evening Wear — A Particular Strength
Monsoon is genuinely brilliant for occasion dressing — weddings, garden parties, christenings — and their embellished and embroidered pieces are a real point of difference on the high street. Sizing in this category is consistent and true to UK standard. If a style has a defined bodice or zip back, measure your bust carefully and go by that number. The skirt lengths do lean longer, which I personally love, but if you're on the petite side their dedicated Petite range is worth a look.
If You're Shopping the Curve Range
Monsoon's Curve range (sizes 18–26) gets solid reviews and the fit is broadly consistent with their main line. The proportions are properly adjusted rather than just scaled up, which makes a real difference in how the garments sit. True to size throughout — no need to size up or down.
Similar Brands Worth Knowing About
If Monsoon's style speaks to you but you want to shop around — whether for sizing reasons or just to compare — here are my picks across the tiers:
High Street & Mid-Market Options
Phase Eight — One of my absolute go-tos for occasion wear with a slightly more polished, tailored finish. Consistently true to size and excellent for weddings.
White Stuff — Brilliant for the boho-casual aesthetic, great prints, and a very loyal sizing that rarely surprises you. Solid for everyday dressing with personality.
Anthropologie — If you love Monsoon's bohemian sensibility but want something a bit more eclectic and design-forward. Sizing runs US so check the conversion carefully.
Joules — Great for print-led, relaxed British style. A touch more casual than Monsoon but lovely for the same customer who loves colour and pattern.
Great Plains — Underrated. Beautifully relaxed cuts, great fabrics, and a sizing that is consistent and reliable. Worth bookmarking.
Part Two — A Scandinavian brand with a muted, wearable palette and easy sizing. Excellent for understated occasion dressing and work-to-weekend pieces.
Oliver Bonas — A bit more playful and trend-led, brilliant for accessories and dresses, true to size and increasingly strong on occasion wear.
Coast — Historically strong on special occasion dressing; the embellished evening and wedding guest pieces are direct Monsoon territory and sized true to UK standard.
Independent & Left-Field Picks
Aspiga — A brilliant independent British brand known for its sustainable fabrics and bohemian silhouettes. If you love Monsoon's holiday-ready, floaty dresses, Aspiga is a wonderful discovery. True to size and beautifully made.
Damson Madder — One of my favourite independent brands at the moment. Quirky, joyful prints, thoughtful sizing, and a genuine commitment to slow fashion. Very much in the spirit of what Monsoon used to do before every brand started to look the same.
