What Is Sizing Like at Mother Jeans?

Mother Jeans run true to size, but they use US waist measurements (24–33) rather than standard UK dress sizes — so if you don't know how to translate that, the whole thing can feel a bit baffling. I've been recommending Mother to clients for years, and the most common thing I hear is: "I love them but I had no idea what size to order." Let's fix that right now.
A Bit About the Brand
Mother Denim is a Los Angeles-based premium denim label that launched in 2010 and has built a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic. The quality is exceptional — they use premium stretch fabrics that hold their shape beautifully, and the fit engineering is genuinely some of the best in the denim world. Yes, they're expensive (typically £200–£350 a pair), but my clients who've bought a pair almost always come back for more. When a pair of jeans fits this well, the cost-per-wear argument becomes very easy to make.
How Mother Sizes Work — UK Conversion Guide
Mother uses US waist sizing, measured in inches. The table below gives you a straightforward conversion to UK dress sizes and EU sizes. As a general rule, if you're between two sizes, I'd suggest going up — the stretch in the fabric is very generous and the waistband can feel quite snug at first on the smaller size.
Mother Size (Waist)UK Dress SizeEU SizeUS SizeApprox. Waist (inches)246340–224"256–834–36225"26836426"278–1036–384–627"2810386–828"2910–1238–40829"3012401030"3112–1440–4210–1231"3214421232"3314–1642–441433"
My tip: Don't guess — measure your natural waist (or the smallest part of your torso) and use that number to select your Mother size. It takes the guesswork out completely.
Style by Style — Does the Fit Change?
Mother makes a dizzying number of styles and cuts, and the fit genuinely does vary by silhouette. Here's what I've found:
The Looker — Mother's bestselling skinny. This one fits very true to size. The stretch fabric moulds to your shape beautifully and holds you in. No need to size up here.
The High Waisted Looker — Same as The Looker but with a longer rise. If you have a longer torso, this will feel more flattering. Still true to size, but some curvier clients find sizing up one works better for comfort across the hips.
The Hustler — A wide-leg bootcut that's one of my personal favourites. This one is more forgiving through the hip and thigh, so you're fine to stay at your standard size. I wore my usual 27 and they fitted perfectly first try — no fiddling required.
The Tomcat — Mother's relaxed straight leg. I'd say these run ever so slightly more generous through the thigh than the Looker. If you're between sizes, size down here.
The Roller — A cropped, straight-leg style that's very casual and relaxed in fit. True to size, no drama.
Flared styles — Very true to size. The stretch means they pull on easily and the waistband feels comfortable from the first wear. I love a Mother flare — they know how to do a proper 70s-inspired sweep without it looking costumey.
A Note on Rise and Inseam
Mother offers inseam lengths (typically 27", 29" and 31") across many of their styles. If you're petite (under 5'4"), I'd always recommend the 27" option — you'll avoid the dreaded bunched-ankle situation. If you're 5'7" or above, go for the 31" wherever it's available. I've had clients order the regular length and end up with jeans that look like capris. Always check the inseam before you buy.
Most Mother styles sit at a high to mid-high rise, which is flattering and practical — no need to worry about gaps at the back waistband that you'd get with lower-rise denim.
High Street Alternatives to Mother Jeans

Mother is a serious investment. These high street picks offer excellent denim quality at a fraction of the price — and some of them genuinely rival the premium market:
Abercrombie & Fitch — Hugely underrated for denim. Their Curve Love range in particular has won over so many women who struggle with waist-to-hip ratios. Excellent stretch, brilliant fits.
Mango — Consistently good editorial-style denim. Their straight-leg and wide-leg styles frequently turn up in Vogue and Elle as budget alternatives to premium brands.
Levi's — The 501, the 724, the Ribcage. Iconic for good reason. Levi's sizing uses the same waist-measurement system as Mother, so you already know your number.
ASOS — The sheer range is unbeatable. Their Hourglass and Tall and Petite fits mean you can actually find jeans engineered for your proportions.
Calvin Klein Jeans — Brilliant for a clean, minimal aesthetic that's close in spirit to Mother's understated LA style. The stretch denim is well made and holds its shape.
Zara — Always on trend for denim shapes. When wide-legs were everywhere, Zara had the best affordable versions. Sizing can run small so check the guide.
Reiss — A step up from the high street but not at premium denim prices. Their denim is well cut, and they do a particularly good straight-leg that looks expensive.
Whistles — Sophisticated and thoughtfully cut. Not always the first brand people think of for jeans, but their denim is quietly excellent and works brilliantly for a polished, grown-up wardrobe.
Premium & Designer Alternatives
If you love the idea of investment denim but want to explore other premium options before committing to Mother:
Citizens of Humanity — Mother's closest rival in terms of quality and ethos. Also LA-based, also uses stretch fabrics brilliantly. A direct swap in terms of sizing approach.
Paige — Another LA premium denim brand with extraordinary stretch technology. Their Hoxton straight is a wardrobe hero. Check their size guide as they run slightly smaller than Mother.
Me&Em — British premium brand doing brilliant denim. Their sizing is in standard UK sizes, which takes away all the conversion faff.
Two Independent Picks Worth Knowing
Boyish Jeans — A sustainability-focused LA denim brand that's genuinely making waves. Beautiful fabrics, flattering fits, and a much smaller environmental footprint than most. Their James straight is a slow-fashion gem.
Ética Denim — Another eco-conscious premium label that's under the radar in the UK but absolutely worth seeking out. Excellent quality, classic silhouettes, and sizing is straightforward and consistent.
My Final Verdict on Mother Sizing
Mother Jeans are genuinely worth the investment if premium denim is your thing — but do your homework on sizing first. Measure your waist in inches, use the conversion table above, and think about which style you're buying because the fit does vary cut to cut. If you're shopping online and can't try before you buy, stick to your measured waist size and go up one if you're between numbers. The stretch fabric means they'll ease in beautifully with wear, but a too-tight waistband is never a good start.
And if you want to make this even easier? That's exactly what Tellar is built for.
