What Is Sizing Like at Munthe?

Munthe runs broadly true to size — but the cut is unmistakably Scandinavian, which means clean through the shoulder, relaxed in the sleeve, and occasionally nipped at the waist on the more tailored pieces. If you usually take a UK 10, your standard Munthe size (an EU 38) will land correctly nine times out of ten. The trick is knowing which of the brand's signature styles behave themselves, and which ones need a little forward planning before you commit.

The honest fit verdict

Founded in Copenhagen in 1994 by Naja Munthe, the label built its name on bold prints, conscious fabrics and that effortless Scandi tension between artful and wearable. Sizing-wise, here's how it actually behaves once it's on the body:

  • Dresses and tops: true to size. Stick with your usual EU/UK size and you'll be right.

  • Fluid and oversized styles: do not size down. The drape is intentional — that loose, slightly undone silhouette is the whole point, and sizing down kills it.

  • Structured pieces (bust darts, tailored waists, cinched details): size up if you carry a fuller bust or hip. This is exactly where my printed-dress mishap happened.

  • Knitwear: generous and comfortable — most clients stay in their normal size and love the slightly cocooning fit.

Where Munthe's sizing catches people out

The brand thinks in European sizing, and its prints can play tricks on the eye. A few things I always flag for clients:

  • The shoulders run clean and a touch narrow — if you're broad across the back, a tailored jacket or shirt-dress may feel snug before anything else does.

  • Waist-cinching and ruffle detailing reads smaller than the flat measurement suggests, because the design pulls the fabric in.

  • Sleeves are often longer and slimmer than the high-street norm — lovely on a longer arm, occasionally a faff if you like to push your sleeves up.

  • Munthe is more size-inclusive than people assume, carrying selected styles up to an EU 48, so don't write it off if you sit at the top of the range.

The fabric factor

Post Image

Much of the range leans on silky viscose, crepe and soft tailoring. These fabrics skim rather than cling, so they're forgiving — but they also have very little stretch. That's the bit people miss. If you're between sizes on a non-stretch printed dress, go up. You can always nip a waist with a belt; you can't add fabric that isn't there.

Where to buy if you love the Munthe look

If Munthe's bold-print, conscious-Scandi mood is your thing but you want options at different price points, these are the brands I genuinely send clients to.

ON THE HIGH STREET

  • Whistles — the closest high-street cousin to Munthe for painterly prints and grown-up contemporary silhouettes.

  • COS — for the pared-back, architectural Scandi side of Munthe; brilliant for clean shapes and quiet tailoring.

  • Mango — surprisingly strong on of-the-moment prints and fluid dresses at a fraction of the price.

  • Hush — relaxed, lived-in pieces with that effortless Northern-European ease.

  • Me+Em — clever, considered tailoring and prints designed to flatter rather than fight you.

  • Oliver Bonas — playful, print-led dresses for when you want a statement without the spend.

  • Phase Eight — your go-to for occasion and statement dresses with structure built in.

PREMIUM PICKS

  • Ganni — the obvious Danish soulmate; bold, joyful, sustainably minded and cut with the same Copenhagen attitude.

  • By Malene Birger — elevated Scandinavian prints and refined tailoring, a natural step up from Munthe.

  • Sézane — French rather than Danish, but the romantic prints and grown-up femininity scratch the same itch.

LUXURY & DESIGNER

  • Totême — Swedish luxury minimalism for when you want the Scandi line at its most polished and investment-worthy.

  • Max Mara — for impeccable tailoring and coats that anchor a print-heavy Munthe wardrobe.

TWO FOR THE FASHION-FORWARD — MY LEFT-FIELD LOVES

  • Baum und Pferdgarten — a Danish independent bursting with clashing colour and print; if you want Munthe's boldness turned up to eleven, start here.

  • Stine Goya — Copenhagen's queen of dopamine dressing, all painterly colour and dreamy silhouettes for the genuinely print-obsessed.
