BRAND SIZING GUIDE

By Ella Blake — Fashion Stylist  |  Tellar Fashion Hub  |  Always honest, unbiased & unsponsored

Musto sizing generally runs true to size — but there are some important nuances depending on which collection you're shopping. Their technical sailing and performance gear is intentionally cut with extra room for layering, whilst the Heritage country and lifestyle ranges tend to sit closer to a standard UK fit. Read on before you buy.

I'll be honest — I came to Musto fairly late. It wasn't really on my radar until I started spending more weekends outdoors and a friend who sails competitively told me in no uncertain terms that I had to try their waterproofs. She was right. But my first order? An absolute disaster in the sizing department. I went for my usual 12, didn't account for the fact the jacket was built to layer over thermals and a mid-layer, and I ended up in something that fitted like a second skin — entirely defeating the point. So let me save you that lesson.

Musto's Core Collections — and Why They Fit Differently

This is the most important thing to understand about Musto: it isn't just one brand with one fit. It's a brand with distinct collections, and they're designed with very different end uses in mind.

  • Performance Sailing (BR1, BR2, MPX): This is hardcore technical kit — offshore waterproofs, drysuits, and regatta gear. These are built big. A size 12 here is designed to go over a base layer, a mid-layer, and sometimes a drysuit. Size down at least one, possibly two sizes if you're wearing them casually or just over a light top.

  • Evolution & Crew range: Musto's mid-level sailing gear — a little less extreme, but still cut generously. Expect a relaxed, functional fit. True to size for most people, with room to layer.

  • Heritage & Lifestyle: This is where Musto becomes genuinely wearable off the boat. Quilted jackets, knitwear, fleeces, and shirts sit much closer to a standard UK fit. These I'd size as true to size without hesitation.

  • Equestrian & Shooting: Cut for movement — slightly longer in the body and sleeve, with a more athletic cut through the shoulders. True to size, though if you're between sizes, size up for comfort when riding.

Ella's Rule of Thumb: If you're buying Musto for sailing or watersports, go up a size. If you're buying from the Heritage or lifestyle range for everyday wear — coat, knitwear, casual trousers — stick to your usual UK size.

Musto Women's Size Conversion Chart

Musto uses standard UK sizing across their women's range. Here's how it converts:

MUSTO / UKUSEUBUST (CM)WAIST (CM)HIP (CM)UK 8 / XS43682–8562–6588–91UK 10 / S63886–8966–6992–95UK 12 / M84090–9370–7396–99UK 14 / L104294–9774–77100–103UK 16 / XL124498–10178–81104–107UK 18 / XXL1446102–10582–85108–111UK 20 / XXXL1648106–10986–89112–115

A note on measurements: When buying technical sailing kit especially, Musto recommends measuring your chest and comparing directly to the garment's chest measurement — not just going by your standard dress size. Their product pages usually include a detailed fit guide, and it's worth two minutes of your time to check it.

Key Pieces — What Fits Well and What to Watch

Let me break it down garment by garment, because sizing really does vary across the range:

  • Waterproof sailing jackets (BR1/BR2): These will feel enormous if you try them on alone in a shop. That's intentional. Try them with a jumper underneath. If they fit snugly over a chunky mid-layer, you've got your size right.

  • Fleeces: Generally very true to size. A 12 is a 12. The cut is fairly relaxed — flattering without being oversized. This is one of the easier categories to buy online without trying on.

  • Quilted jackets (Heritage range): True to size. Slightly relaxed through the body, with a great cut across the shoulders. These are a real favourite of mine — they look genuinely polished, not just "outdoor brand."

  • Base layers: These are meant to be close-fitting — that's the whole point for performance thermoregulation. Size down if you want the proper technical performance; go true to size if you want them comfortable for everyday wear.

  • Knitwear: Slightly generous, as is traditional with British-heritage brands. A 10 often has the ease of a 12. If you like a fitted knit, size down one.

  • Trousers: Consistent with UK sizing. Inseam lengths are limited (standard is usually around 31"), so if you're petite or tall, check individual listings carefully.

  • Boots and shoes: True to UK sizing — no surprises here.

Shopping Musto: My Honest Take

Post Image

Here's what I really think about Musto as a brand: it's genuinely excellent at what it does. If you want technical waterproof performance, there are very few brands operating at this level at a competitive price point. But it can feel intimidating — the product descriptions are technical, the sizing quirks require a bit of understanding, and the website isn't always the most intuitive.

My advice? Start with the Heritage or lifestyle range if you're new to the brand. The quilted jackets and fleeces are brilliant, they look smart and last for years, and the sizing is completely straightforward. Once you're confident in the brand's fit, explore the technical sailing range — just remember the layering rule.

Also worth noting: Musto does sale periods well. Their end-of-season sales include genuine reductions on serious technical kit, and that's when it's worth grabbing sailing waterproofs at a significantly lower price point. Their quality absolutely justifies the investment.

If Musto Isn't Quite Right — Brilliant Alternatives to Consider

Musto is brilliant, but it's not for everyone — and the technical range in particular can feel like overkill if you just want a smart, practical outdoor jacket for life on land. Here are my top picks across every price point:

🛍 HIGH STREET & ACCESSIBLE

  • Seasalt Cornwall — My absolute first recommendation for Musto lovers who want something more everyday. Seasalt has that same coastal, maritime soul — brilliant waterproof jackets, genuinely beautiful knitwear, and a real commitment to longevity. Sizing is true to size, and the fit is relaxed and flattering.

  • Fat Face — A brand that does the outdoorsy-but-stylish thing better than almost anyone at this price point. Their quilted jackets, fleeces, and waterproofs are excellent, and sizing is consistent and reliable.

  • Joules — Iconic for their waterproof wellies, but their outerwear and casual knitwear is genuinely good. A more feminine, country-lifestyle spin on the outdoor aesthetic. True to size throughout.

  • White Stuff — For the lifestyle and knitwear side of Musto rather than the performance angle. Beautifully made everyday pieces with real character. Sizing is generous — size down if in doubt.

  • Barbour — The natural comparison point for anyone drawn to Musto's Heritage range. Their wax jackets and quilted gilets are classics for a reason, and sizing is standard UK sizing throughout.

  • Lands' End — Massively underrated for serious outerwear. Their waterproof parkas and squall jackets rival performance brands at a fraction of the price. True to size and excellent value.

  • Crew Clothing — Lives and breathes the same nautical, British-heritage world as Musto. Beautifully made casual pieces — rugby shirts, deck shoes, fleeces — with a clean, unfussy aesthetic and reliable sizing.

  • Boden — Not an obvious Musto alternative, but if you're drawn to the Heritage lifestyle aesthetic rather than performance sailing, Boden's outerwear and knitwear is exceptional quality and extremely well-sized.

✨ PREMIUM STEP-UP

  • Helly Hansen — Musto's closest rival in technical performance outerwear. Norwegian heritage, exceptional waterproofing, and a slightly more streamlined fit than Musto. Broadly true to size, with some styles running slightly slim.

  • Gant — For the lifestyle end — smart casual outerwear, knitwear, and sailing-heritage pieces with a more fashion-forward edge. True to size, with excellent quality for the price.

💎 INVESTMENT & DESIGNER

  • Arc'teryx — If budget is no object and performance is everything, Arc'teryx is the benchmark. Canadian rather than British heritage, but the Gore-Tex construction is unmatched. Runs slim — size up one.

  • Bogner — For the luxury outdoor lifestyle aesthetic — skiing, country pursuits, serious performance that looks incredibly chic. European sizing — check their conversion chart carefully.

🌿 INDEPENDENT PICKS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

  • Finisterre — If you haven't discovered this Cornish outdoor and surf brand yet, please go and look. Their sustainability credentials are exceptional, their waterproof jackets are genuinely brilliant, and the aesthetic is cool in a way that Musto's technical range simply isn't. True to size. A brand I recommend constantly.

  • Fairfax & Favor — For the equestrian and country end of what Musto offers — beautifully made British country lifestyle pieces with a real sense of occasion. Their leather boots and accessories are extraordinary, and their sizing is standard UK throughout.
