What Is Sizing Like at Needle & Thread?

Needle & Thread sizing runs broadly true to size, but fitted bodices and structured waists can come up slightly small — I'd always recommend sizing up by one if you're between sizes or buying a corset-style dress without stretch. It's one of those brands where knowing your measurements before you click "buy" really does save you a world of disappointment — especially when you're spending £300 on a gown you want to wear once and feel like an absolute dream in.

I've been dressing clients in Needle & Thread for years, and I genuinely love what the brand does. Founder Hannah Coffin has built something quite special — impossibly romantic dresses dripping in sequins, hand-stitched florals and cloud-like tulle layers that feel genuinely luxurious without quite tipping into full designer territory. But beautiful as these pieces are, the sizing can be inconsistent across styles. A flowing midi in one season might fit completely differently to a structured gown the next. Let me break it all down for you.

Needle & Thread Size Guide: The Conversion Table

Needle & Thread uses standard UK sizing. Here's how that maps across to US, EU and Italian sizing:

UK SizeUS SizeEU SizeIT SizeBust (cm)Waist (cm)Hips (cm)6234388163888436408466911063842887095128404492749914104246967810316124448100821071814465010486111

Needle & Thread typically offers sizes UK 6–18, though stock availability varies quite a bit by style. Sell-through is fast — particularly in their sequin and tulle styles — so if you spot your size, don't dither.

Needle & Thread Dresses: Where Sizing Gets Interesting

The dresses are the heart of the brand, and this is where fit really matters. Here's what I've noticed working with clients across different silhouettes:

  • Tiered tulle dresses — These are usually the most forgiving. There's very little structure at the waist, so sizing is fairly generous. Stick to your usual UK size.

  • Corset & bodice dresses — Size up here, full stop. The boning and structured bodices are cut quite narrowly, and if you've got any volume through the bust or ribcage, your usual size will be uncomfortably tight. I've seen this catch so many clients out.

  • Midi wrap and flutter-sleeve styles — These tend to run true to size, and the wrap element gives a bit of flexibility at the waist. A solid choice if you're new to the brand.

  • Mini dresses and shorter party styles — Generally true to size. The stretchy lining in many of these helps enormously.

  • Floor-length gowns — I'd always recommend checking the length details here. If you're under 5'5", many of these will need hemming. For taller wearers, the length tends to work well.

Tops, Blouses & Separates

Needle & Thread have expanded into separates in recent years, and the sizing tends to be a little more generous than on the dresses. Blouses and tops with embellished sleeves run true to size or even slightly large — the focus is on the decorative detailing rather than a close fit. If you prefer a more tailored look, size down.

Their co-ord sets — usually a cropped embellished top with a matching midi skirt — can sometimes have slight sizing discrepancies between top and bottom. It's worth measuring both pieces against their size guide rather than assuming the set will be uniform. I once put a client in a co-ord where the top was perfect but the skirt was snug at the hip — a classic separate-piece problem.

My Top Tips for Getting the Fit Right

Post Image

  • Always measure your waist. For fitted styles, this is the measurement that catches people out more than any other. Needle & Thread's waist measurements are not generous.

  • Check for a stretch lining. Styles with lined stretch underskirts are far more forgiving than unlined tulle or structured outer layers.

  • Read the fabric content. Pure woven fabrics with no elastane = no give. Factor that in.

  • If in doubt between two sizes — go up. A dress that's slightly too large can be taken in by a good seamstress. One that's too small is unwearable.

  • Returns are easy but slow. Needle & Thread's return process is straightforward, but turnaround can take a couple of weeks — plan ahead if you're buying for a specific event date.

Brilliant Alternatives at Every Price Point

Love the Needle & Thread aesthetic but want to explore other options? Whether you're working with a tighter budget or looking to invest further, these brands deliver beautifully on occasion wear.

HIGH STREET & ACCESSIBLE

  • Phase Eight — Consistently excellent for occasion wear. Their embellished and lace dresses are beautifully constructed for the price point, and sizing tends to be reliable and consistent across seasons.

  • Monsoon — The original occasion-wear stalwart. Known for richly printed fabrics, floral details and embellishment. A brilliant option if you love the decorative, romantic feel of Needle & Thread but want to spend considerably less.

  • Coast — Specifically built for events — weddings, balls, parties. Strong on embellishment and sequins, and their sizing is generally generous and accessible across a wide range.

  • Anthropologie — A slightly more eclectic, bohemian take on occasion dressing. Their embroidered and floral dresses can feel genuinely unique, and they offer a wide size range with detailed fit notes.

  • Ted Baker — Florals, embellishment and elegant occasion dressing are Ted's sweet spot. Known for flattering cuts and reliable UK sizing. A perennial favourite for wedding guest dressing.

  • Whistles — Slightly more understated than Needle & Thread but beautifully made. Great for elegant occasion pieces in luxurious fabrics. Their sizing runs true and they cater well to women who want something sophisticated rather than overtly showy.

  • Reiss — For a more polished, contemporary take on occasionwear. Reiss does embellishment and structure very well. Sizing runs true — a reliable choice for something special without veering into maximalism.

  • Hobbs — A little more classic and British than Needle & Thread, but incredibly well made. Their occasionwear leans towards timeless elegance — florals, silks and tailored shapes that work year after year.

  • LK Bennett — The go-to for polished, event-ready dressing. Midi lengths, quality fabrics and silhouettes that work brilliantly for weddings, races and smart occasions. Their sizing is reliable and tends to run true.

TWO INDEPENDENT PICKS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

  • Ghost London — A quietly brilliant British brand that never gets quite the credit it deserves. Ghost specialises in bias-cut, vintage-inspired silk-satin and georgette dresses that are impossibly elegant. The fabric drapes beautifully, the price point is genuinely accessible, and the aesthetic is romantic in exactly the right way. Sizing tends to run slightly generous — a lovely change. Ghost is one I keep coming back to for clients who want something effortless and a bit under-the-radar.

  • Kitri — A London-based independent label with a loyal following for very good reason. Their dresses are print-led, beautifully made in small batches, and often sell out fast. The aesthetic is joyful and modern — midi dresses with interesting details and grown-up prints. Sizing runs true to standard UK measurements. Worth bookmarking if you like wearing something nobody else at the party will have on.
