What Is Sizing Like at New Balance?

New Balance trainers generally run true to size — but there are a handful of things worth knowing before you buy, because some styles run noticeably narrow, and the brand's width options are genuinely one of the best-kept secrets in trainers. Get your New Balance size right and you'll never look back. Get it wrong and you'll be living in blisters. I've done both, so let me save you the trouble.

I've been wearing New Balance on and off for years — the 574 was practically my uniform through my mid-twenties, and more recently I've become slightly obsessed with the 9060. Over time I've learned that while the sizing is broadly consistent, a few details really do matter. Here's everything you need to know.

Do New Balance Trainers Run True to Size?

In most cases, yes. For the majority of styles — the 574, the 373, the 327 and the 530 — your standard UK shoe size will serve you well. New Balance uses a relatively generous last (the foot-shaped mould the shoe is built on), which means most women find their usual size fits comfortably without needing to size up.

That said, there are some exceptions:

  • If you have a wider foot — some styles, particularly the sleeker, more fashion-forward silhouettes like the 530 and 1906R, can feel a touch snug across the forefoot. Worth trying on if you can, or ordering two sizes to compare.

  • If you're between sizes — New Balance does offer half sizes in most styles, and I'd always recommend sizing up by half if you're in any doubt. Trainers that are slightly too big are far more comfortable than ones that pinch.

  • Running models — if you're looking at performance styles like the Fresh Foam 1080 or the FuelCell Rebel, sizing can differ slightly from the lifestyle range. Running shoes often benefit from a thumb's width of space at the toe, so many runners go half a size up.

New Balance Width Fittings — A Game-Changer

This is genuinely one of the things I love most about New Balance, and yet so many women don't realise it's an option. The brand offers several width fittings across many of its styles:

  • N (Narrow) — for slim feet that tend to slip in standard trainers

  • D (Standard) — the default width most styles come in

  • 2E (Wide) — a wider fit for broader feet or those who find standard trainers uncomfortable

  • 4E (Extra Wide) — available on select styles, particularly running and walking models

I have a friend who spent years convinced she just "couldn't wear trainers comfortably" until she tried a wide-fit New Balance. Absolute revelation. If your feet are on the wider side, please explore this — it genuinely changes the experience.

Style-by-Style Sizing Breakdown

Not all New Balance styles fit identically. Here's my honest take on the most popular women's silhouettes:

  • New Balance 574 — the classic. Fits true to size with a slightly roomier toe box. Comfortable straight out of the box, ideal for all-day wear. I've had mine for three years and they're still going strong.

  • New Balance 327 — runs true to size but has a slightly narrower fit than the 574. If you have a wider foot, size up half a size or look for a wide fit option.

  • New Balance 530 — slightly snugger across the toe box, especially in the early days. True to size for most, but if you're wider-footed, go half up.

  • New Balance 9060 — my current obsession. Chunky, cushioned, extremely comfortable. True to size with a generous fit — I went true to size and they were perfect from day one.

  • New Balance 1080 (running) — I'd suggest half a size up here, as you want that extra toe room when running.

  • New Balance 2002R — true to size, slightly padded feel. One of the more forgiving fits in the range.

My Top Tips for Getting Your New Balance Size Right

Post Image

  • Always try on both feet if shopping in-store — most of us have one foot slightly larger than the other, and you should fit to the bigger one.

  • Shop later in the day — feet swell slightly through the day, so afternoon fitting gives you the most accurate size.

  • Consider your socks — the thickness of your socks affects the fit. If you're a trainer-with-thick-socks person (no judgement, same), factor that in.

  • Check the width option before buying online — even if you've never needed a wide fit before, it's worth knowing the option exists.

  • If ordering online, ASOS and John Lewis both have free returns, which makes sizing experimentation much less stressful.

How to Style New Balance — The Stylist View

Part of the reason New Balance has had such a fashion moment (and honestly, it shows no signs of slowing down) is the versatility. These are not just gym shoes anymore — and if you're still treating them as such, you're missing out.

  • The 9060 or 2002R with wide-leg jeans and an oversized blazer is one of my most-reached-for combinations right now. The chunky sole balances the volume of the trouser perfectly.

  • The 574 or 327 work brilliantly with midi skirts and a tucked-in shirt — that contrast of feminine silhouette with a slightly retro trainer is such an easy win.

  • Matching-set gym wear with the Fresh Foam range is obviously a no-brainer, but I'd actually style these with tailored shorts and a crisp white tee for a more considered off-duty look.

  • Don't overthink it — New Balance trainers have that rare quality of making a very simple outfit look intentional. Jeans, a neutral knit, your NB of choice. Done.
