What Is Sizing Like at Nobody's Child?

Nobody's Child runs true to size on UK sizing — but with one big caveat: if you're busty, curvy, or on the taller side, you'll almost certainly want to size up. The brand uses standard UK sizing from 4 to 24, and for most body shapes it lands pretty much where you'd expect. It's the fabric, cut, and your specific proportions that can throw things off — and once you know those nuances, shopping Nobody's Child becomes genuinely enjoyable rather than a guessing game.

I have a complicated relationship with this brand, if I'm honest. I picked up one of their classic shirred midi dresses on a whim — bought my usual size, fell completely in love with the print, wore it all summer. Then I washed it. In viscose. On the wrong setting. Reader, it did not survive. After that particular fashion crime (entirely my own fault, let the record show), I started paying much closer attention to both the fabric content and the fit before I buy. And now I'm properly converted — when it works, Nobody's Child really does deliver.

The Basics: How Nobody's Child Sizes Up

The brand offers UK sizes 4 through 24, which is genuinely inclusive for a contemporary fashion label at this price point. They also offer a petite range, which is rare and much appreciated — more on that below. Here's the full size conversion and measurement guide:

UKEUUSBUST (CM)WAIST (CM)HIPS (CM)43207860856342826489836486689310386907297124089578102144210100831071644121079011418461411497121204816119102126225018124107131245220129112136

ELLA'S KEY RULEAlways check the bust measurement first when shopping Nobody's Child dresses. The shirred and elasticated bodices are a signature of the brand — and they can run narrow. If your bust falls between two sizes, go up. You can always belt a slightly looser waist; you cannot magic extra room across the chest.

Fit by Category — What to Expect

Dresses (The Star of the Show)

This is what Nobody's Child is known for — pretty midi dresses in eco-viscose and TENCEL™ with romantic prints, puff sleeves, and shirred bodices. And they really are lovely. But this is also where the sizing can catch you out:

  • Shirred and elasticated bodices run narrow across the bust and waist. If you have a fuller chest — a D cup or above — sizing up is not just a suggestion, it's genuinely necessary. I've seen so many returns on this point alone.

  • Wrap and tie-front styles tend to be more forgiving as there's more adjustability built in. These work brilliantly for curvier figures and are often a better bet if you're between sizes.

  • Length is on the longer side. If you're under 5'4", what's described as a midi will probably fall closer to a maxi on you. The petite range addresses this — use it if you're shorter. If you're tall (5'8" and above), the standard length is genuinely flattering.

  • Viscose fabrication — the most common fabric in the range — has no stretch to it. When it fits, it's beautiful and drapey. When it's a size too small, it pulls and creases in all the wrong places.

Tops & Blouses

  • Generally true to size, but again, watch the bust. Cropped styles in particular can be shorter than you'd expect, so if you have a longer torso, check the measurements on the product page.

  • Puff-sleeve and smock-style tops can feel boxy on petite frames — consider sizing down and adjusting the waist with a belt if needed.

Trousers & Jeans

  • Trousers and wide-leg styles run slightly snug at the waist — if you carry any weight here, I'd say size up without hesitation.

  • Jeans follow standard UK sizing but fit slim through the hip and thigh. Check your hip measurement carefully against the size guide — this is where most people find they need to go up a size.

  • Leg lengths are limited across some styles. If you're petite, look for the shorter inseam options. If you're tall, check the length in the product description before buying.

Jumpsuits

  • Notoriously tricky to size in any brand, and Nobody's Child jumpsuits are no exception. Button-front styles in particular run tight across the chest and stomach — size up here as a default if you have any curves whatsoever.

  • The viscose fabric, while gorgeous on, can shrink if washed incorrectly. Cold wash, gentle cycle, and lay flat to dry. I cannot stress this enough.

The Petite Range — Actually Worth It

A lot of brands pay lip service to petite sizing without really delivering. Nobody's Child is one of the better ones — the petite dresses are genuinely shortened in the skirt and bodice, not just hemmed down from the standard version. If you're under 5'4", it's well worth shopping the petite range first, especially for dresses and jumpsuits. The proportions are simply better.

A Note on Fabric & Washing

This feels like a sidebar but it's really not, because the fabric directly affects the longevity of the fit. The majority of Nobody's Child pieces use eco-viscose, recycled polyester, or TENCEL™. All of these fabrics look and feel beautiful when new. Viscose, however, will shrink if you're not careful — sometimes dramatically. Cold wash only, no tumble dryer, reshape while damp. If you can hand wash, even better. Follow the care label to the letter and your pieces will last. Ignore it and you'll end up with what amounts to a very expensive crop top.

High Street Alternatives to Nobody's Child

If the sizing or fabric faff puts you off, or you simply want something in a similar aesthetic at a slightly different price point, these are the brands I'd point you towards:

  • Monsoon — shares that romantic, print-led aesthetic but tends to be cut with more ease. Brilliant for dresses and occasion pieces, particularly if you're busty. Their sizing tends to be more generous, which feels like a relief after NC's close-fitting shirred styles.

  • White Stuff — lovely quality fabrics, a similar nature-meets-fashion sensibility, and very consistent sizing. Their midi dresses and blouses are a particular strength. Much more forgiving across the chest.

  • Boden — excellent if you love the vintage print aesthetic but want something with more reliable construction. Boden's sizing is very consistent and they're honest about fit on the product page. A brilliant alternative for taller women especially.

  • Oliver Bonas — beautiful print dresses at a very similar price point to Nobody's Child, with a great high street presence. I find their sizing slightly more generous and the fabrics similarly feminine.

  • Great Plains — a genuinely underrated brand for romantic everyday dressing. Their dresses and blouses are cut with proper womanly proportions, and the fabric quality is excellent for the price.

  • Joules — for the nature print, countryside-romantic corner of the Nobody's Child aesthetic. Very reliable sizing, great quality, and their midi dresses in particular are a wardrobe staple.

  • Warehouse — solid choice for the more fashion-forward pieces. Good for dresses with interesting cuts, midi skirts, and blouses with a bit more edge.

  • Urban Outfitters — for the younger, boho corner of Nobody's Child's range. Great for floaty sundresses, puff sleeve tops and romantic separates with a more indie edge.

Premium & Designer Alternatives

  • Rixo — the obvious step up if you love Nobody's Child's print dresses. Beautiful silk fabrics, incredible prints, and the kind of craftsmanship that takes the aesthetic to the next level. Sizing runs slim — use measurements.

  • Sézane — French-girl chic with beautifully made dresses and blouses. A natural progression from Nobody's Child for those who want more refined, less trend-led pieces with the same romantic spirit.

Two Independent Labels Worth Discovering

  • Sister Jane — a London-based indie label that occupies exactly the same romantic, vintage-inspired, print-heavy space as Nobody's Child, but with slightly more structured construction. Often stocked at ASOS. Their shirred and smocked dresses are stunning, and the fabrics are a step up. Worth every penny.

  • Petalon — a tiny independent British label making limited-run floral print dresses from deadstock fabric. If you love the Nobody's Child aesthetic but want something truly unique — and properly sustainable — this is it. Find them at petalon.co.uk.
