What is Sizing Like at Nudie Jeans?

Nudie Jeans generally runs true to size, but because they use a waist-and-inseam measurement system (think 26/30, 28/32) rather than the standard UK 8–16 scale, navigating their sizing for the first time can feel genuinely confusing — and that confusion has caught out even the most seasoned denim shoppers, myself included. The good news? Once you know your waist measurement in inches and understand how their individual cuts behave, shopping Nudie becomes one of the most satisfying denim experiences out there.

I first discovered Nudie Jeans about eight years ago, when a friend wore a pair of their raw selvedge jeans to a dinner and I genuinely couldn't stop staring at them — in the best possible way. That deep indigo, the clean construction, the fact that they'd clearly been lived in and had developed this beautiful fade. I was completely sold. But my first online order? An absolute disaster. I ordered my usual waist size without accounting for the fact that raw denim has almost no stretch — and spent a very undignified ten minutes trying to get them on before admitting defeat. Lesson thoroughly learned.

Understanding Nudie Jeans' Sizing System

Unlike most high street or even premium denim brands, Nudie Jeans sizes their women's jeans using a W (waist) x L (inseam/length) system — the same way traditional denim has always been sized in the US. So instead of picking up a "size 12," you're looking at something like W29 x L32.

Here's what each number means:

  • W (Waist): Your waist measurement in inches. Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso — for the most accurate reading.

  • L (Length/Inseam): The inseam length in inches, measured from the crotch seam to the hem. Common lengths are 28, 30, and 32 inches. For reference, a 30-inch inseam generally hits mid-ankle on a woman of around 5'6".

One crucial note: Nudie's raw denim styles (unwashed) will shrink slightly with the first few wears and washes. For these styles specifically, I'd suggest going one waist size up from your measurement. For their pre-washed and organic cotton styles, your true measurement works perfectly.

* Measurements are a guide. Always measure your natural waist (not hips) for Nudie sizing. For raw/dry denim styles, size up one W size to allow for initial shrinkage.

How Each Nudie Jeans Cut Fits

Post Image

Nudie is not a one-fit brand. Their range spans everything from spray-on skinnies to relaxed wide-legs, and each silhouette fits quite differently. Here's my honest guide to their key women's cuts:

  • Hightop Tilde: A high-rise skinny that is the backbone of the women's range. Fits slim through the thigh and leg, with a comfortable high waist that gives real definition. This is the cut I always recommend to Nudie first-timers. True to size in pre-washed versions; size up for raw.

  • Skinny Lin: Lower-rise and more fitted than Tilde — this one really hugs. If you have any volume in the thigh or hip, I'd size up. It's unforgiving in the best possible way if you get it right, but frustrating if you don't.

  • Breezy Britt: A straight-leg style with a mid-to-high rise. Much more relaxed through the hip and thigh than the skinnies, which means it suits a wider range of body shapes brilliantly. This one runs slightly generous — you could size down if you're between sizes and prefer a cleaner fit.

  • Flared styles: Nudie's flared cuts tend to have a snug fit at the hip and thigh before opening into the flare. Measure your hips carefully for these — if you're larger in the hip than the waist, size to your hip measurement and have the waist taken in if needed.

  • Raw / Dry Denim styles: I cannot stress this enough — size up. Raw denim has virtually no give initially. After a few months of wear and a first wash, they'll mould to your body perfectly, but you need that initial room to work with. Going true to size in raw denim is a rookie mistake (one I have personally made, never again).

The Nudie Jeans Ethos — Why the Sizing Complexity Is Worth It

Here's the thing about Nudie Jeans that separates them from practically every other denim brand on the market: they are genuinely, properly committed to sustainability. All their cotton is 100% organic, their repair shops will mend your jeans for free for life, and they have a thriving resale programme for worn pairs. In a world of fast fashion and disposable denim, Nudie is doing something genuinely different.

And once you've found your size? The quality speaks for itself. These are jeans that get better with every wear, developing a patina and character that no pre-distressed high street pair can replicate. I have a pair of Hightop Tildes in a deep indigo that are now four years old and honestly look better now than they did on day one. That's the Nudie promise — and it delivers.

Style-wise, Nudie jeans are incredibly versatile. The skinnies work beautifully tucked into ankle boots with an oversized blazer — very Scandi-cool without trying too hard. The straight-leg Breezy Britt looks brilliant with a simple white tee, loafers and a trench coat for that effortless off-duty look. For evenings, a pair of dark indigo skinnies with heeled mules and a silk blouse does the job every single time.

Brilliant Alternatives at Every Price Point

Love the Nudie aesthetic but want options at different price points? Here's where I'd look:

HIGH STREET PICKS

  • Levi's — The obvious spiritual cousin to Nudie, and for good reason. Levi's remains the benchmark for accessible quality denim. Their 501s and 724s in particular have a similar straight-leg, true-denim energy. A wardrobe non-negotiable at any price point.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — Don't overlook these. A&F's denim has had a serious quality glow-up over the past few years and their '90s straight jean and curve love range are genuinely excellent — particularly for those who struggle to find jeans that fit both waist and hip well.

  • Zara — Consistently one of the best high street denim options. Their straight-leg and wide-leg styles in dark rinse or raw-look finishes are well-cut and land right in the Nudie aesthetic territory. Fast-moving stock, so when you see something you like, move quickly.

  • Mango — Mango's denim has improved enormously. Their straight and barrel-leg styles are particularly good, and the quality of fabric feels a step above most high street competitors. Great for capturing that clean, unfussy European denim look.

  • Urban Outfitters — A great destination for denim with edge. Their BDG range covers everything from wide-leg to skinnies with a slightly more relaxed, vintage-leaning aesthetic that Nudie fans will recognise immediately.

  • All Saints — For a darker, more utilitarian denim aesthetic. All Saints does slim-cut and straight-leg denim really well, with an emphasis on quality fabric and clean, unfussy styling. Very grown-up high street denim.

  • The Gap — Criminally underrated for denim. Gap's straight and high-rise styles offer excellent quality for the money, and their sizing is generous enough to feel genuinely inclusive. Particularly strong in their classic indigo washes.

  • Topshop — Still a cult denim destination via ASOS. Their Jamie jean remains one of the best high-rise skinnies the high street has ever produced. If you know your Topshop denim size, it tends to be consistent across styles.

PREMIUM PICKS

  • Citizens of Humanity — The premium denim brand I recommend most often to clients who love Nudie but want something a little more elevated. Brilliant fabrics, considered cuts, and a commitment to quality that really shows after multiple wears and washes. Their Goldie and Sloane styles are particularly strong.

  • Paige — For premium denim with a more polished, dressed-up energy. Paige's Hoxton and Transcend fabric technology means these jeans look sharp for longer and feel incredibly comfortable. If you want dark indigo denim that holds its colour and its shape, Paige is hard to beat.

INDEPENDENT & LEFT-FIELD PICKS

  • Mud Jeans — A Dutch brand doing something remarkable: a circular denim model where you can lease jeans, return them, and they're either repaired and re-leased or recycled into new denim. The environmental credentials rival Nudie's, and the denim itself — slim-cut, beautiful indigo washes — is genuinely lovely. Not as widely known as it deserves to be.

  • Outland Denim — An Australian ethical denim brand that employs and supports marginalised women in Southeast Asia, paying living wages and providing career development. The denim itself is excellent — beautifully constructed, great range of fits — but it's the brand's integrity that makes it special. A genuinely meaningful purchase.
