What is sizing like at Only & Sons menswear?

Only & Sons runs on the slim side, so if you're between sizes or you carry any width through the chest, thighs or seat, take the size up. It's a Danish label from the Bestseller group — the same stable as Jack & Jones and Selected Homme — and that European cut shows in the fit: narrower shoulders, a closer body, and trousers designed to sit lean rather than roomy.

How the sizing actually works

There are two systems to keep straight, and mixing them up is where most people come unstuck.

  • Tops, knitwear and jackets use alpha sizing — S, M, L, XL through to 2XL. Roughly speaking a Medium lands around a 38–40" chest, a Large around 40–42". The cut is contemporary, so there isn't much spare fabric.

  • Jeans and trousers use waist and leg in inches (a 32W/32L, for example), and they come in named fits — Slim, Tapered, Loose, Wide and so on. The name tells you far more than the waist number does.

  • Their own advice is to size up when you're on the fence, which tells you everything about how they expect the fits to land.

A quick word from experience

I'll be honest — the first Only & Sons overshirt I bought, I ordered my usual Large and it fit like a fitted shirt with the buttons done up. Handsome across the shoulders, useless over a jumper. That was the lesson: with this brand, decide whether you want it worn on the body or over layers before you pick the size. The win came later with their tapered jeans — a 32/32 in the tapered fit gave me a clean line through the thigh with just enough room to move, and they've outlasted denim that cost three times as much.

What to buy, and how to style it

Only & Sons is at its best on the trend-led, everyday end of the wardrobe rather than tailoring. It's where you go for the pieces that date quickly and shouldn't cost a fortune while they're in.

  • Tapered and loose jeans. The volume in menswear has moved away from skinny for a couple of seasons now. A tapered pair keeps you current without going full balloon-leg; size the waist true and let the fit name do the shaping.

  • Overshirts and boxy tees. These are cut short and square by design. If you like a longer line, that's the one place I'd size up a notch.

  • Cargo and wide trousers. Bang on trend, and a cheap way to test whether the wider silhouette suits you before you invest properly elsewhere.

Styling-wise, keep it simple: let one relaxed piece do the talking and pin the rest of the outfit down. Wide trousers want a neater top half; a boxy tee wants a slimmer trouser. Balance beats matching every time.

Seven brands worth knowing if you shop Only & Sons

If the fit works for you, these sit naturally alongside it — and a couple solve the sizing niggles Only & Sons can throw up.

High street

  • Jack & Jones — its sister brand, so the fit blueprint is near-identical. If you know your Only & Sons size, you basically know your Jack & Jones size. Deeper stock and a stronger denim range too.

  • Bershka — the same young, slim, trend-first cut at a similar price. Genuinely small make, though; I'd size up as a default here.

  • River Island — a touch more generous through the body, so a good shout if Only & Sons feels a fraction too lean on you but you still want the current shapes.

Independent & boutique

  • ASKET — Swedish, minimalist, and the sizing answer to a lot of these problems: many pieces come in short, regular and long, so you're fitting to your actual proportions rather than an average.

  • Percival — a London label with more character in the details than the high street offers. Slightly relaxed fits and a nice step up in fabric when you want it.

Designer & luxury

  • A.P.C. — the French benchmark for clean denim and a lean, understated line. If you like the Only & Sons silhouette but want it to last a decade, this is the upgrade.

  • Officine Générale — Parisian, elevated, brilliant on the smart end. The pieces you build an outfit around once the trend-led stuff has done its job.
