What Is Sizing Like at Pepe Clothing ?

Pepe Jeans generally runs true to size across its tops and jackets, but the denim — especially skinny and high-rise styles — tends to run small at the waist and sits snug through the thigh, so if you’re between sizes or curvier through the hip, size up. That’s the short version. The longer version is more interesting, because Pepe is one of those brands where the fit genuinely shifts depending on what you’re buying — and I’ve learned that the hard way.

The honest fit, from someone who’s returned a fair few pairs

I’ll be straight with you. The first pair of Pepe skinnies I ordered, years ago, I bought in my usual size and couldn’t get them past my thighs — a properly mortifying changing-room moment. The very next pair, a relaxed straight leg, fit beautifully in exactly the same size. That is Pepe in a nutshell. Founded on Portobello Road in 1973, it’s a denim house at heart, and the cut-to-cut variation is the price you pay for that range.

Here’s how it actually breaks down:

  • Skinny & high-rise jeans: Run small, particularly the rigid, low-stretch washes. Size up for comfort, especially through the waist and thigh.

  • Mom, straight & wide-leg styles: Far more forgiving. True to size, relaxed through the hip.

  • Denim jackets: Fitted through the shoulder and arm. True to size, or size up if you want to layer a jumper underneath.

  • T-shirts & tees: True to size with a slim European cut, though often a touch longer in the body than average.

  • Blazers & knitwear: Blazers can pinch across the shoulders; jumpers run baggier than expected, so size down on knits if you like a neat fit.

Why Pepe sizing trips so many people up

Pepe is a global brand manufactured across Europe and Asia, and it frequently labels in EU sizes even on its UK site. That’s the real culprit. You might be a UK 10 in one wash and need a 12 — or a W29 — in another, simply because the denim composition has changed. Rigid cotton has almost no give; power-stretch sculpts beautifully but feels tight on the first wear before it relaxes. My rule with Pepe: always check the actual label, never trust the size you reckon you “usually” are.

What’s genuinely worth buying

The sculpting stretch skinnies are bestsellers for a reason — properly flattering on athletic and hourglass frames once you’ve nailed the size. The denim jackets are the real hero, though: proper structure, good weight, the kind of piece you’ll still be reaching for in ten years. I’d be more cautious with the rigid vintage washes unless you’re happy to size up and let them mould to you over time.

If Pepe’s fit just isn’t playing ball, here’s where I shop for jeans across every budget.

High street

  • River Island — trend-led denim that moves fast; brilliant for of-the-moment wide legs and barrel cuts.

  • Topshop — the cult skinny and Jamie jeans that built a whole generation’s wardrobes; back, and as good as ever.

  • Gap — classic, honest American denim with reliable mid-rise straights and a genuinely generous size range.

  • Mango — sharp European cuts and excellent on-trend tailored denim at a gentle price.

  • New Look — my go-to for budget skinnies and a curve range that actually fits.

  • Warehouse — grown-up, polished trend denim that punches well above its price.

  • Superdry — sturdy, casual everyday denim with a sportier leaning.

Premium

  • Paige — LA-born, buttery soft, the jeans that feel like nothing on; worth every penny for the comfort alone.

  • Citizens of Humanity — the connoisseur’s denim, with cuts and fabrics that genuinely outclass the high street.

Luxury & designer

  • Reiss — tailored, refined denim that bridges smart and casual beautifully.

  • Max Mara — understated, impeccably cut; the denim equivalent of a perfect blazer.

And two independents worth discovering

  • Hiut Denim — Welsh-made selvedge from Cardigan in organic cotton, with free repairs for life. Investment denim done properly.

  • E.L.V. Denim — a London brand crafting one-of-a-kind jeans entirely from upcycled denim. Sustainable, sharp and genuinely individual.
