What is Sizing Like at Peuterey?

Peuterey runs small — sometimes very small — and as an Italian outerwear brand using European sizing conventions, you should expect to go up at least one size, and quite possibly two, compared to your usual UK number. I learnt this the hard way when I ordered a beautiful quilted jacket online in what I assumed was my size, waited ten days for it to arrive, and then couldn't get my arms into it comfortably enough to do the zip up. Spectacular fail. Don't be me. Size up.

For the uninitiated: Peuterey is an Italian premium outerwear brand founded in 2000, based in the Veneto region, and quietly beloved by the kind of people who care deeply about the quality of their coat without needing a logo splashed across it to prove the point. Think sleek down jackets, beautifully constructed parkas, elegant wool-blend coats — all with that unmistakable Italian tailoring sensibility. It's not cheap, but when you put one on, you understand immediately why people keep coming back.

How Peuterey Sizing Works

Peuterey uses Italian/European sizing across its women's range. The numbers will feel unfamiliar if you're used to standard UK sizing — an Italian 40 is roughly a UK 10 to 12, but in Peuterey's case, the fits tend to be cut quite slim, particularly through the shoulder, chest and sleeve. The brand designs its outerwear to sit close to the body rather than with a great deal of ease — which gives their pieces that sharp, tailored look, but means fit requires careful attention.

A few things to bear in mind before you buy:

  • Shoulder width is everything in outerwear. If the shoulders don't fit, nothing else matters and you can't tailor your way out of it. This is where Peuterey's narrower Italian cut catches people most often. If you carry width in your shoulders, size up without hesitation.

  • Down jackets versus tailored coats fit differently. Peuterey's down styles have more flexibility thanks to the fill, but their wool and structured coats are cut quite precisely. I'd always size up on the structured pieces.

  • Layering changes everything. If you're buying a coat or jacket for British winter — i.e., to wear over chunky knitwear, thick jumpers and scarves — you need that extra room. Factor in what you'll be wearing underneath.

Sizing Across Peuterey's Key Categories

Peuterey's range is broader than many people realise — they do far more than just down jackets, though those are rightly what they're famous for. Here's how sizing and fit play out across their main categories:

  • Down Jackets (quilted & padded): These are Peuterey's signature and the category they're most celebrated for. The fill gives a little flexibility, but the outer shell is cut quite snugly. Size up one, and if you're between sizes or have broader shoulders, go up two. The result should feel fitted but with full arm movement — you shouldn't be fighting the jacket to do up your seatbelt.

  • Parkas: Peuterey parkas tend to have a slightly more relaxed silhouette than their fitted down jackets, but still cut narrow through the shoulder. For a clean, modern fit, size up one. For layering over thick knitwear in proper winter, size up two.

  • Wool & Tailored Coats: The most unforgiving category for fit. These are cut with Italian precision and there is very little ease built in. Measure your bust and shoulder width carefully and match them against the garment measurements where possible. A coat that's too tight across the back is unwearable — and heartbreaking when it's a beautiful Peuterey.

  • Light Jackets & Transitional Pieces: Their spring/summer outerwear is generally a little more relaxed in cut. You may get away with sizing up just one here, or even your true size if the style looks unstructured. Always check individual product measurements when buying online.

  • Leather & Technical Jackets: Similar story to the tailored coats — slim cut, structured, not forgiving. Size up and consider shoulder measurement above all else.

The Peuterey Aesthetic — and How to Wear It

Post Image

What I love about Peuterey — genuinely love, not just professionally admire — is that the brand manages to produce outerwear that is both seriously functional and impeccably stylish. There's no trade-off. Their down jackets won't embarrass you at a smart lunch, and their tailored coats will keep you genuinely warm in January. That's a harder balance to strike than it sounds.

Style-wise, I always come back to the same formula with Peuterey: let the coat do the talking. A sleek Peuterey down jacket in black or navy over slim-cut trousers and clean ankle boots, with a cashmere roll-neck underneath — that's a complete outfit. Done. No need for anything fussy on top. The brand rewards restraint, and that's very much my kind of dressing.

Their parka styles work brilliantly belted over tailored trousers or wide-leg jeans for that smart-casual sweet spot that's genuinely useful for the British climate — where you need to look pulled-together but also survive actual weather. And their longer wool coats, when you get the fit right, are genuinely investment-piece territory. Buy once, wear for fifteen years.

The Best Alternatives to Peuterey at Every Price Point

Whether the price point isn't quite right or you just want options to compare, here's where I'd look for that same sleek outerwear energy:

HIGH STREET PICKS

  • Massimo Dutti — My top high street recommendation for Peuterey alternatives without question. Massimo Dutti consistently produces some of the best-quality outerwear on the high street — tailored wool coats, smart padded jackets, clean parkas — all with that European cut and restrained aesthetic. Sizing also runs slightly slim, so apply the same size-up logic here.

  • Jigsaw — A brilliant British brand for grown-up, considered outerwear. Their coats are beautifully constructed and they have a particular talent for clean-cut down jackets and parkas that punch well above their price point. Consistently underrated.

  • Whistles — For tailored coats and sleek transitional outerwear with real polish. Whistles has a quiet confidence that Peuterey fans will recognise — no logos, no fuss, just excellent cut and fabric.

  • Barbour — A heritage staple for outerwear with genuine weather-proofing credentials. Their quilted jackets and waxed styles have a different aesthetic to Peuterey's Italian sleekness, but for functional British winter dressing, Barbour delivers every time.

  • Gant — Often overlooked but consistently excellent for smart casual outerwear. Gant's padded and quilted jackets have a clean, Scandi-influenced sensibility that translates beautifully to the kind of effortless outerwear look Peuterey does so well.

  • Reiss — For the more tailored, city-dressing end of outerwear. Reiss coats and smart padded styles are very well cut, well-priced for the quality, and reliable in fit. A genuinely strong option for work-to-weekend outerwear.

  • Hugo Boss — Boss's women's outerwear range is seriously undersung. Their down jackets and tailored coats in particular have excellent construction and that same European precision-cut that Peuterey fans appreciate. Quality fabrics, clean lines, very wearable.

PREMIUM PICKS

  • Max Mara — If Peuterey is your gateway drug to Italian outerwear, Max Mara is the ultimate destination. Their camel coats are the stuff of legend, and the brand's entire outerwear range operates at a level of quality and elegance that is genuinely peerless. A proper investment, but one that pays dividends for decades. Sizing also runs Italian — size up in the same way.

  • Hush — A brilliant step up from the high street for coats and padded jackets with real character. Hush's outerwear has become increasingly impressive — their padded longline styles and wool coats in particular are excellent quality and the sizing is refreshingly consistent.

INDEPENDENT & LEFT-FIELD PICKS

  • Stutterheim — A Swedish brand that has quietly become a cult favourite among the fashion crowd for its beautifully constructed raincoats and outerwear. Think clean, architectural shapes, muted Scandinavian colour palettes, and an obsessive attention to waterproofing and construction detail. If Peuterey appeals but you live somewhere that demands serious rain protection (hello, UK), Stutterheim is extraordinary. Not widely stocked in the UK but worth seeking out.

  • Rains — Another Scandi brand with a devoted following. Danish-designed, Rains makes minimalist, incredibly functional outerwear that manages to look chic in a way most rain-proof jackets spectacularly fail to. Their puffer and quilted styles are particularly good — clean, considered, and sized in a way that makes sense. Available online and increasingly in UK stockists.
