What Is Sizing Like at Phase Eight?

By Ella Blake — Fashion Stylist  |  Tellar Fashion Hub — Always honest, unbiased & unsponsored

Phase Eight runs true to standard UK sizing — and it's one of the few mid-market brands where I genuinely mean that without any caveats about going up or squinting at a conversion chart. If you're a UK 12, you're almost always a 12 at Phase Eight. That said, there are some genuinely important nuances depending on what you're buying — and given that a lot of women are coming to Phase Eight specifically for occasionwear, weddings, and events where fit really matters, it's absolutely worth knowing the details before you commit.

I've styled a lot of clients for weddings, races, and black-tie events over the years, and Phase Eight comes up constantly — and for good reason. The brand has carved out a very specific niche: beautifully designed occasionwear that actually fits real women's bodies, offered at a price point that doesn't require a second mortgage. Their design team clearly understands that their customer isn't a 22-year-old sample size. The proportions are kinder, the fabrics are considered, and the silhouettes flatter rather than torture. But as with any brand, knowing how to navigate the sizing makes the whole experience so much smoother.

Phase Eight Women's Size Guide

Phase Eight uses standard UK sizing from a 6 through to a 22 across most of their range, with petite options available on selected styles. Here's the full conversion breakdown:

💡 Ella's tip: Phase Eight's petite range is cut for women 5'3" and under — shorter body length, narrower shoulders, adjusted hem lengths. If you're petite and ordering dresses or trousers, the petite range is really worth seeking out. A standard length Phase Eight midi on a 5'2" frame will almost always land at maxi length and lose all the intended proportion.

Sizing by Garment — What to Expect

Phase Eight's range is wide — from everyday knitwear and smart separates through to full-on Mother of the Bride and wedding guest dressing. Sizing behaviour varies quite a bit across these categories, so here's the honest breakdown:

  • Occasionwear Dresses & Midi Dresses: This is Phase Eight's heartland, and it's where they do their best work. Their structured occasion dresses — the ones with boning, ruching, or built-in shaping — tend to run true to size but with very little ease. If you have a fuller bust or broader back, I'd strongly recommend going up one size and having the waist taken in by a seamstress if needed. It's far easier to take in than to let out. Their more relaxed midi styles in jersey or crepe are more forgiving and usually very accurate to size.

  • Wrap Dresses: Phase Eight does a brilliant wrap dress — probably one of the best on the high street at this price point. These are naturally adjustable, so they work across a wider range of body shapes. Stick to your usual size; the wrap closure handles the rest.

  • Knitwear: Their knitwear is consistently good quality and runs true to size, with a slightly relaxed cut through the body that most women find flattering and comfortable. No need to size up here unless you prefer a very oversized look.

  • Tailoring — Blazers & Trousers: Phase Eight has improved their tailoring enormously in recent seasons. Blazers run true to size but with a slightly longer body length than some competitors — brilliant if you're tall, less so if you're shorter. Trousers follow standard UK sizing but the leg length tends to suit women around 5'6"–5'8" best; petite lengths are available and well worth using.

  • Tops & Blouses: Very reliable sizing here — true to size across the board. Their blouses in particular are cut with a slightly more generous waist than some competitors, which is genuinely refreshing and suits a wider range of body shapes.

  • Coats & Jackets: True to size, but worth bearing in mind that Phase Eight's outerwear is cut for a neat, feminine profile rather than a voluminous layer. If you like to wear chunky knitwear underneath a coat, or you have broader shoulders, go up one size. Their coats look beautiful when fitted correctly — slightly nipped at the waist, clean through the shoulder — but get the shoulder seam wrong and the whole look falls apart.

  • Occasionwear with Embellishment or Structured Fabric: Anything with sequins, heavy beading, or structured fabric — think their New Year's and Christmas party range — tends to have less stretch and less give than their everyday pieces. Size up one to be safe, particularly if you're wearing shapewear underneath or have a fuller bust.

My Honest Fit Advice for Getting Phase Eight Right

I've put enough women in Phase Eight over the years to have some very strong opinions about this. Here's what I always tell clients:

  • For weddings and occasions: try before you buy if at all possible. Phase Eight has a good physical presence in John Lewis, House of Fraser, and their own standalone stores. For something you're wearing to a significant event, going in and trying on is worth the trip. Occasionwear fit is personal in a way that everyday dressing just isn't — you need to sit, walk, and ideally eat a canapé in it before you commit.

  • Check the fabric content before sizing. A Phase Eight dress in stretch jersey behaves completely differently to one in structured satin or lace. Always check the composition — if there's less than 5% elastane in a fitted style, that's a stiffer fabric that needs a bit more room.

  • Use the petite range if you're under 5'3". I cannot stress this enough. Phase Eight's petite range isn't just shortened hems — the proportions are genuinely adjusted throughout, and the difference in how a dress falls is transformative. Their standard length on a petite frame creates a completely different silhouette to the one intended.

  • Don't be seduced by the hanger. Phase Eight's occasionwear in particular often looks underwhelming on a hanger and completely different on a body. I've watched clients write off a dress in the first five seconds and then look absolutely stunning in it once it's on. Give the structured styles a proper chance.

  • Read the reviews. Phase Eight's website has genuinely useful customer reviews, and the fit comments from real women — particularly for individual dresses — are often more useful than the size guide. Filter by your size and read what women with similar measurements say.

Love Phase Eight's Look? Smart Alternatives at Every Budget

Phase Eight sits in a sweet spot — more considered than the high street, more accessible than premium occasionwear brands. Here's where I'd look if I wanted something similar:

High Street & Mid-Market Picks

Post Image

  • Hobbs — The closest brand to Phase Eight in terms of target customer and aesthetic. Beautifully made, classically British, and excellent for smart-casual and occasionwear. Sizes well for most UK body shapes and the quality per pound is excellent.

  • Jigsaw — More understated than Phase Eight, but with a similar commitment to quality fabrics and considered design. If you want Phase Eight's elegant sensibility without any fuss, Jigsaw is the answer.

  • Whistles — Brilliant for smart separates and occasion-ready pieces with a slightly more fashion-forward edge. Their occasionwear has improved dramatically in the last few seasons.

  • Coast — Coast and Phase Eight operate in almost exactly the same space — occasionwear, wedding guest, Mother of the Bride. Worth checking both before committing to either, as prices and availability on specific styles vary considerably.

  • Monsoon — Brilliant for colour, print, and a slightly more bohemian take on occasionwear. Their embroidered and printed styles are genuinely lovely and often underrated by women who haven't been in-store recently.

  • M&S — Marks & Spencer's Per Una and Autograph occasionwear lines have quietly become genuinely competitive with Phase Eight in terms of quality and fit. Worth a look, particularly for mother-of-the-bride and smart dressing, and their size range is broader.

  • Boden — If you love Phase Eight's more relaxed, everyday pieces — the knitwear, the casual dresses, the smart-casual separates — Boden delivers on all of it with brilliant fabric quality and distinctive British personality.

Premium Picks

  • LK Bennett — The natural step up from Phase Eight for occasionwear. Kate Middleton's go-to for a reason — beautifully crafted, impeccably cut, and genuinely worth the extra spend for a wedding or very special occasion.

  • Reiss — Sleeker, more minimal, and slightly younger in attitude than Phase Eight, but overlapping in the smart-casual and occasion space. Their tailoring in particular is excellent.

Independent & Left-Field Picks

  • Ghost London — An iconic British brand that's been quietly producing beautiful bias-cut and satin occasion dresses for decades, and has enjoyed a genuine renaissance recently. Their pieces have a romantic, effortless quality that Phase Eight's more structured occasionwear can't quite match. Great sizing, lovely fabrics, and genuinely individual.

  • Alie Street — A small independent British label that's become something of a cult favourite in the wedding guest space. Beautiful prints, flattering cuts, and a real understanding of how clothes need to work on actual bodies at actual events. If you've only ever heard of Phase Eight and Hobbs for occasions, Alie Street will feel like a revelation.
