What is sizing like at Polo Ralph Lauren menswear?

Polo Ralph Lauren tends to run slightly generous, so for most men the fit you pick matters far more than the size on the label.

The three fits, explained

Polo builds most of its shirts and polos around three cuts. Knowing them saves you a world of returns:

Classic Fit — the roomiest and most traditional. Generous through the chest, body and sleeve. This is the one that runs large.
Custom Fit (sometimes labelled Custom Slim) — the everyday middle ground. Trimmer through the body but still comfortable. For most men, this is the sweet spot.
Slim Fit — the closest cut, tapered through the waist and arms. Best on leaner or athletic frames.

Where Polo runs large — and where it doesn't

The classic pony polo is the biggest culprit. In Classic Fit it's cut long in the body and roomy across the shoulders, which is why so many men end up looking boxier than they should. I learned this the hard way early in my career: I ordered my usual medium Classic Fit polo, wore it once, and spent the whole day tugging at a hemline sitting halfway down my thigh. Switching to the Custom Fit in the same size fixed everything. My rules now:

Polo shirts — go Custom or Slim rather than dropping a whole size, unless you specifically want that relaxed, old-school drape.
Oxford shirts — the Classic Fit oxford is famously long and boxy in the body with a generous sleeve. The Custom Fit is the sensible everyday choice for most.
Knitwear — fairly true to size, occasionally a touch generous. Only size down if you're between sizes and want a cleaner line.

Chinos, trousers and tailoring

Trousers are where Polo behaves more predictably.

Chinos and trousers are sold by waist and leg measurement, and the waist sizing is broadly true. The difference is in the leg — the slimmer Bedford cut is properly tapered, while the more classic cuts leave real room through the thigh.
Tailoring and blazers lean towards the traditional American cut with a little more room in the body. If you want a sharper silhouette, try before you buy or consider sizing down the jacket.

What to buy right now

Ralph is having a genuine moment again as smart-casual, Ivy-inspired dressing comes back around. If you're building from the ground up, I'd start with:

A Custom Fit oxford in white or blue — the workhorse that goes under knitwear or over a plain tee.
A mid-weight lambswool jumper for easy layering.
A pair of straight-leg chinos in stone or navy.

Keep it tonal, keep it simple, and let the pieces do the work.
