What Is Sizing Like at Primark?

Primark sizing is notoriously inconsistent — it can run small in some categories, true to size in others, and the brand has no online store, which means you can't even check reviews before you head in. The short version: go in armed with your measurements, be prepared to try things on, and don't assume your usual UK size will hold across every rail. I say that not to put you off — Primark genuinely delivers some brilliant finds — but because knowing the quirks upfront saves a lot of frustration in the changing room queue.
I'll be candid: I have a slightly complicated relationship with Primark. As a stylist I'd be snobbish about it at my peril — my clients shop there, I shop there, and some of the trend-led pieces in there are genuinely excellent value. A linen blazer for £18? A pair of wide-leg trousers that look like they cost four times the price? Yes please. But I've also been caught out more than once by sizing that varies wildly between the jersey T-shirt that fits perfectly and the denim that refuses to go past the thighs in the same size. So here's everything you actually need to know.
How Does Primark Sizing Work?
Primark uses standard UK women's sizing, running from a size 4 up to a 24 across most product ranges. They also offer a dedicated Curve range (sizes 16–28) in many stores, plus a Petite line in selected larger branches. The sizing system is straightforward enough on paper — the problem is consistency in execution, which varies significantly by garment type and, honestly, by production run. This is the reality of a brand working at Primark's volume and price point.
Here's how Primark's women's sizing maps to standard UK measurements and international equivalents:

These are the standard measurements Primark publishes — but here's the important caveat: actual garment measurements in store frequently deviate from these, particularly in denim, tailoring, and anything with a defined waistband. Always try on if you can. It's worth the queue, I promise.
The Garment-by-Garment Breakdown
This is where I can really help you, because Primark is very much a category-by-category story rather than a brand-wide sizing rule.
Jersey Basics & T-Shirts: The most reliable category in the store. These tend to run true to size or very slightly generous — ideal for layering. A size 12 is almost always a size 12 here. Stock up without stress.
Denim: The trickiest category, and the one where I've heard the most complaints. Primark denim routinely runs small — sometimes by a full size — particularly through the waist and thigh. If you're a size 12 everywhere else, start with a 14 here and work down. The wide-leg and barrel-leg styles are more forgiving; the skinny and slim fits are where you really feel the size variance.
Dresses: Generally true to size in jersey and satin fabrics. Structured dresses — anything with boning, a defined bodice, or a zip — can run small across the bust, so size up if you're fuller there. The occasion dresses (particularly around party season) have improved enormously in recent years and some are genuinely brilliant for the price.
Loungewear & Pyjamas: Generous and relaxed — this is one of the best categories in the store. The co-ord sets in particular are excellent value, and they tend to wash well too. True to size or slightly large; size down if you prefer a neater fit.
Knitwear: Variable. Thinner jersey knits run true; the chunkier, more structured knits can come up small through the shoulders. Check the shoulder seam position when you try things on — if it's sitting off your shoulder, it's too small, not too big.
Tailoring & Blazers: Primark's tailoring has genuinely surprised me in recent years — there are some strong pieces in there, particularly the linen blazers in spring/summer. These run on the smaller side; I'd size up one as a rule. The shoulders can be narrow even when the body fits.
Swimwear: Runs small, particularly in bikini bottoms. If you're between sizes, always go up. The bikini tops are not great for larger busts — the structure isn't there above a D cup. For that reason, I'd actually suggest shopping swimwear elsewhere if support matters to you.
Coats & Jackets: These tend to run true to size or slightly generous, which makes sense — you need room for layers. The duster coats and longline styles are particularly good value and the fit is usually solid.
The No-Online-Shopping Problem — and How to Work Around It

One of the genuinely frustrating things about Primark is the lack of a full online shopping offer. You can browse the website to see what's in, but you can't order from home. This matters for sizing because it removes the safety net of easy returns that most of us now rely on. My advice? Know your measurements before you go. Not your size — your actual bust, waist and hip measurements in inches. That way, when you're in the changing room and something doesn't look right, you can make a more informed decision about whether to try a size up rather than guessing.
The return policy is worth knowing too: Primark accepts returns within 28 days with a receipt, but without one you'll get a gift card at most. Keep your receipt every single time.
Brilliant Alternatives When Primark Doesn't Deliver
Primark is brilliant for what it is, but it's not the answer to everything. Here's where I'd send clients who want similar price points or a step up in quality:
High Street Picks:
New Look — Primark's closest high street competitor in terms of price and trend-led style. Better sizing consistency and the added luxury of online shopping with easy returns. A brilliant first port of call if Primark has let you down.
H&M — Slightly above Primark on price but significantly more consistent on sizing. Their basics, denim and knitwear are particularly reliable. The online experience is excellent and the sustainability-focused Conscious range is worth exploring.
River Island — A natural step up for anyone who loves Primark's trendier pieces. Strong on denim (and the sizing is far more consistent), great on occasionwear. Runs true to UK size across most categories.
Topshop (via ASOS) — Topshop lives on as an ASOS-exclusive brand now, and the quality has actually held up well. A brilliant online option when you want the Primark aesthetic but with the convenience of home delivery. Sizes run true.
Hollister — Great for casual basics and denim with a more relaxed, American feel. Sizing runs small — use their size guide — but consistency is better than Primark's. Good for younger customers and basics addicts.
The Gap — Underrated on the UK high street. Brilliant for classic basics — T-shirts, denim, knitwear — with very consistent sizing and excellent fabric quality for the price point. A grown-up upgrade from Primark's basics range.
Benetton — One of the high street's best-kept secrets for colourful, quality knitwear and basics at a very fair price. Sizing is EU-based but consistent, and the quality genuinely outlasts Primark's equivalent pieces.
Premium Options — When You're Ready to Invest:
Jigsaw — A beautifully made, quietly stylish British brand that sits well above the high street in terms of cut and longevity. If you've ever bought a Primark blazer and wished it was better quality, Jigsaw is the answer. Sizing is true and reliable.
Hush — The ultimate upgrade for Primark's loungewear and casual-chic customer. Hush does relaxed, elegant everyday dressing exceptionally well — and the sizing is extremely consistent and generous in the best possible way.
Great Plains — A brand that doesn't get nearly enough attention. Brilliant prints, excellent fabric quality, and very well-priced for what you get. Consistent UK sizing and a fantastic selection of easy-to-wear everyday pieces.
Two Independent Finds Worth Knowing:
Lucy & Yak — A cult independent British brand known for their extraordinary dungarees, wide-leg trousers and colourful, ethical basics. If you love Primark's casual, fun aesthetic but want something more considered and longer-lasting, Lucy & Yak is genuinely special. Inclusive sizing, very clear size guides, and an absolutely devoted following for good reason.
Louche London — An independent London label doing beautiful print dresses, blouses and occasion pieces at a very accessible price point. The quality far exceeds the cost and the prints are genuinely distinctive. A brilliant discovery for anyone who loves what Primark tries to do with occasionwear but wants something with more personality and longevity.
