Slim Fit — the closest cut, narrow through the chest and sleeve. Sharp if you're slim or gym-built, but check the shoulders don't pull.

I learned this the hard way years ago. I bought a Classic Fit Oxford in my "normal" medium for a wedding, tried it on the morning of, and looked like I'd borrowed my dad's shirt. Now I tell every client the same thing: at Ralph Lauren, choose the fit first and the size second.

How it wears, piece by piece

Polo shirts

The famous mesh polo in Classic Fit is deliberately boxy and long — great tucked into shorts, less so worn out. The Custom Slim polo is the sharper everyday choice and sits far better untucked. Collars and plackets stay consistent year to year, so once you know your fit you can reorder with confidence.

Oxford & dress shirts

Cut long in the body by design, so they stay tucked. Classic Fit shirts are generous in the chest and collar; Slim and Custom are trimmer and a touch shorter, which suits anyone wearing a shirt open or untucked.

Knitwear

Relaxed and true to size, occasionally a shade generous. Sleeves run slightly long, and the chunkier cable-knits and shawl cardigans wear big — no bad thing this season, when a heavier, roomier knit is exactly what you want.

Chinos & trousers

The waist is honest — close to the number on the tag. The classic leg is relaxed, while the Stretch Slim cuts are far more modern. The inside leg tends to come long, so budget for a hem.

What to buy right now

The heritage pieces are having a proper moment. A rugby shirt, a chunky shawl-collar cardigan, a mesh polo in a muted tone, and a pair of pleated chinos will all earn their keep. Buy the ease Ralph Lauren does well and let it look relaxed rather than fighting the cut to make it slim.
