What Is Sizing Like at Replay?

Replay uses European sizing and runs small — typically one full size smaller than standard UK sizing — and their denim in particular is cut close to the body with a very precise, Italian-influenced fit that leaves little room for error. I'll be honest: the first time I bought a pair of Replay jeans, I ordered my usual EU size and spent an entertaining few minutes wrestling them over my hips before admitting defeat and exchanging them. One size up, and they were perfect — that gloriously snug Italian denim fit that looks brilliant once it's actually on. If you've ever bought Italian or Southern European denim and had the same experience, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Why Replay Is Worth Getting to Know

Replay was founded in Italy in 1981 under the We Are Replay parent brand, and it's spent the last four decades perfecting the art of premium denim. This is a brand that takes its jeans seriously — seriously enough to have developed proprietary fabric technologies and washes that give their denim a look and feel that's genuinely hard to replicate at a lower price point. You'll find Replay stocked in department stores across the UK and Europe, and they've built a loyal following among people who want more than the usual high street denim offer but aren't quite ready to commit to the very top tier of designer jean prices. It's a sweet spot, and they occupy it well.

Beyond denim, Replay does a strong casual ready-to-wear offer — T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, and some tailored pieces — but denim is unquestionably their heartland, and it's where this post will spend most of its time.

Replay Size Conversion Table

Replay uses European (Italian) sizing throughout the women's range. Here's your guide:

Measurements are a guide. Replay's denim fits differently across styles — always check the specific garment's waist and hip measurements where available, as the cut varies considerably between their skinny, slim, straight and wide-leg fits.

Denim Sizing at Replay — The Detail That Actually Matters

Replay's jeans are sized by waist measurement in inches (W) paired with leg length (L) — exactly as you'd expect from a premium denim brand. This is actually really helpful once you know your waist in inches, because it takes the guesswork out of the EU size conversion. Here's a quick W-size reference:

Waist (inches)Waist (cm)Approx. UK Jean SizeW2461 cmUK 6W2563–64 cmUK 6–8W2666 cmUK 8W2768–69 cmUK 10W2871 cmUK 10–12W2973–74 cmUK 12W3076 cmUK 12–14W3179 cmUK 14W3281 cmUK 14–16

My firm advice: always measure your actual waist before ordering Replay jeans online. Not your "I think I'm a W28" waist — your actual measurement with a tape measure, taken at the narrowest point. Replay's denim has very little stretch in most styles, so getting the waist measurement right is everything. Hip measurement matters too, particularly if you have a significant waist-to-hip differential.

Fit by Jean Style — Which Cut Is Right for You?

Replay has a well-developed range of denim fits, each with slightly different sizing behaviour:

  • Skinny & Super Skinny Fits (Luz, New Luz): The styles Replay is perhaps best known for. These are cut very close to the body from waist to ankle. They do tend to have a degree of stretch in the fabric, which helps with wearability, but they are still cut slim — if you're between sizes, go up. The fit through the thigh is the key measurement here, as the waist and hip can often be adjusted with a belt but the thigh cannot.

  • Slim Straight Fits (Faaby, Maijke): Slightly more forgiving than the skinnies, with a straighter leg from the knee down. These are brilliant everyday jeans and tend to suit a wider range of body shapes. True to W-size is usually reliable here, though again — measure first.

  • Wide-Leg & Flared Fits (Reyne, Teleony): The relaxed, 70s-influenced end of the Replay range. These are much more forgiving in the fit and you'll find them truer to size than the skinny styles. For wide-leg fits, I'd generally recommend sticking to your actual waist measurement in inches and not sizing up, as too much room in the waist defeats the point of the look.

  • Mom & Relaxed Fits: Replay's nod to the current relaxed denim trend. These have more ease built in and the fit is genuinely comfortable — size true to your W measurement and enjoy the fact that you don't need to lie on the bed to do them up.

Beyond Denim — How the Rest of the Range Fits

Replay's non-denim offering — T-shirts, sweatshirts, casual shirts, and outerwear — follows the same EU sizing, and the same rule applies: expect to size up one from your usual UK size. Their casualwear tends to have a slightly looser, more relaxed fit than the denim (which is a relief, frankly), but the EU-to-UK gap is consistent across the range. Their jackets and outerwear in particular can run quite narrow in the shoulder, so if you're broader across the back, try before you buy or check the shoulder measurements carefully.

My Stylist's Verdict on Replay Denim

Post Image

Replay sits in a genuinely great denim sweet spot — better quality construction and fabric than almost anything on the high street, but without crossing into the territory where you feel anxious about sitting on a pub bench in them. The washes and finishes are consistently excellent, and unlike some premium denim brands, Replay keeps its range broad enough that you can find everything from a dark indigo office-appropriate straight leg to a sun-bleached wide-leg for the weekend. For everyday premium denim that lasts, they're a very solid investment. Just measure your waist first. I cannot stress this enough.

High Street Alternatives for the Replay Denim Look

Replay prices sit at the premium end of the market, and there are genuinely good alternatives if you want a similar quality of finish at a lower price point:

  • Levi's — The obvious first call for premium-quality denim at a more accessible price. Brilliant range of fits (the 501, 724, and Ribcage styles are all excellent), and sizing is consistent and reliable. A wardrobe staple for very good reason.

  • Citizens of Humanity — Probably the closest in quality and aesthetic sensibility to Replay on the premium market. American-made, exceptional denim quality, and the fits are some of the most consistently flattering available. Worth every penny.

  • Paige — Another premium denim brand that competes directly with Replay. Brilliant stretch fabrics, excellent fits, and a very polished finish. Particularly strong for skinny and slim straight styles.

  • Mango — Genuinely strong denim at a very competitive price. Their straight-leg and wide-leg jeans in particular have attracted consistently good reviews and they update their washes seasonally. A brilliant option if budget is a consideration.

  • River Island — One of the better high street destinations for denim that goes beyond the basics. Their premium denim range has improved enormously and the range of fits is excellent for the price point.

  • Zara — Consistently good denim, particularly for trend-led washes and silhouettes. The quality is variable across the range, but the mid-tier denim pieces are genuinely impressive for the price and the fits have become more consistent in recent seasons.

  • Urban Outfitters — A brilliant destination for that slightly worn-in, vintage-inspired denim aesthetic that Replay does so well at the premium end. Good range of relaxed and wide-leg fits, and they carry a strong selection of third-party premium denim brands alongside their own.

Premium & Designer Alternatives

  • Hugo Boss — Strong premium denim with a very clean, polished finish. Their slim and straight-leg fits are excellent and the sizing is more consistent than many European denim brands. A good step up from the high street without quite reaching luxury prices.

  • Calvin Klein — Brilliant for clean, minimal denim with that classic American heritage. The CK Jeans line in particular offers excellent quality at a competitive premium price point, and the fits are reliably true to size.

  • All Saints — Not a denim-first brand, but their dark-wash slim and straight jeans are genuinely excellent and the quality is impressive. The aesthetic is more rock-and-roll than Replay's Italian cool, but the quality is comparable.

Two Independent Picks Worth Discovering

  • Agolde — A Los Angeles–based denim brand that has become a genuine cult favourite among stylists and denim obsessives. The 90s-inspired loose and straight fits are some of the best on the market, the quality is exceptional, and the brand has a real considered, sustainable ethos. If you haven't tried them yet, start with the Riley or 90s Pinch Waist styles.

  • Nudie Jeans — A Swedish brand with an exceptional commitment to quality and sustainability. Their raw and pre-washed denim is some of the finest available at this price point, and they offer a free repair service for life on all their jeans. For premium denim with an independent, ethical spirit, Nudie is unbeatable.
