What Is Sizing Like at River Island?

River Island sizes true to standard UK sizing across most of its range — so if you're a UK 12 at Marks & Spencer or Next, you'll almost certainly be a 12 at River Island too. That's the short answer. But — and there's always a but — the brand covers everything from bodycon going-out dresses to denim, workwear, and knitwear, and fit consistency does vary by category. I've learnt this the hard way over the years. So let me walk you through what you actually need to know before you click buy.
The Overall Fit Picture
River Island is a mainstream UK high street brand pitched at women in their 20s and 30s, and their sizing reflects a fairly standard British body template. Cuts tend to assume a moderately proportioned hourglass — not extreme, but definitely not boxy or generous. If you carry more weight on your hips relative to your waist, or have a fuller bust, you'll notice this in certain styles.
In general though? I find River Island's sizing refreshingly reliable. I've grabbed things in my usual size on a whim and had them fit well. It's not the brand where I dread buying online — unlike some designer houses where a size 10 could mean almost anything depending on the season and the designer's mood.
River Island Size Guide — UK, US & EU Conversions
River Island uses standard UK sizing. Here's how that maps across to US and EU sizes, along with approximate body measurements:
UK SizeUS SizeEU SizeBust (cm)Waist (cm)Hips (cm)6234806187843684659110638886995128409273991410429677103161244100811071814461048511120164810889115
River Island currently stocks sizes UK 6–24, with extended sizes across a growing proportion of the range — good news if you've struggled to find their pieces in larger sizes previously.
Fit by Garment Type — What to Watch Out For
This is the bit most guides skip, and honestly it's the most useful part. River Island's fit isn't uniform across categories. Here's my honest, garment-by-garment breakdown:
Dresses: Generally run true to size and are often one of the more forgiving categories. Bodycon and occasion styles tend to be cut fairly snug — if you're between sizes, go up. Wrap and shirt dresses sit more generously.
Jeans & Denim: Can run slightly small in the waist. If you're between sizes, size up. Their denim has good stretch in most styles, but it doesn't give much if you've bought too small — I made that mistake with a pair of their wide-leg jeans and spent the first hour in them desperately breaking them in.
Tops & Blouses: Typically true to size. Fitted styles can be narrow across the shoulders for those who are broader, so always check shoulder seam placement if buying online.
Knitwear: Usually runs generous — this is a good thing. Oversized silhouettes are common across the range and are intentionally roomy. If you want a slimmer fit, consider sizing down.
Coats & Jackets: True to size on the whole, and River Island tailored coats in particular have improved in quality and cut over recent years. Allow room for layering — if you're buying a winter coat, check the sleeve length as some customers find these run slightly short.
Occasion & Going-Out Wear: Their going-out category (sequins, cut-outs, satin mini dresses) is where sizing gets most variable. I'd always recommend reading reviews on specific pieces before buying. The construction isn't always as considered as the styling.
Petite, Tall & Curve Ranges

River Island has made real strides here. They offer dedicated Petite (for heights under 5'3"), Tall (for heights over 5'8"), and Plus/Curve ranges — which is genuinely helpful. The petite range is particularly solid for denim and trousers where proportioning matters most. The tall range is limited but growing. If you shop standard sizing and fall outside the average height bracket, keep the leg and sleeve lengths in mind — this is where most of the fit disappointments I hear about come from.
My Honest Assessment — Who River Island Fits Best
River Island fits most reliably if you fall in a UK 8–16, are close to average height, and have proportions that roughly follow the standard British template. If you have a significantly smaller waist relative to your hips (pear shape) or a fuller bust, you may find tailored styles trickier. Knitwear and relaxed styles are more forgiving. Their price point makes it good for trend pieces — things you'll wear for a season rather than forever — and the quality has genuinely improved across womenswear in recent years.
Best Alternatives If River Island's Sizing Doesn't Work For You
If River Island's cut doesn't suit your shape, here are my tried-and-tested alternatives across price points:
High Street Picks:
Warehouse — A brilliant River Island alternative for occasion and workwear. Similar aesthetic, slightly more considered construction, and sizes run true. Great for dresses and blazers.
Topshop (now via ASOS) — The spiritual sister brand to River Island. Strong on denim and trend-led pieces. Sizing is very similar, making switching between the two straightforward.
ASOS — A huge breadth of own-label styles at the same price point, with one of the best size ranges going. If you're petite, tall, or plus, ASOS own-brand often fills the gaps that River Island can't.
New Look — Slightly more affordable, with excellent petite and curves ranges. Denim particularly strong and well-reviewed for sizing consistency.
Next — A steadier, more conservative fit that suits those who find River Island a little cut for curves. Excellent for workwear and outerwear. Sizes are generous and consistent.
Phase Eight — A step up in quality and occasion wear. Fits a broader range of body types than River Island and cuts beautifully for women who want something a little more refined.
Oasis — Now exclusively online, but the brand has been revived with a very similar offer to River Island. Feminine occasion and going-out wear, with slightly more relaxed proportions in the waist.
Premium Step-Up:
Reiss — For investment pieces at a higher price point. Exceptional tailoring, consistent sizing, and the kind of quality that makes River Island's occasion pieces look like what they are. Worth it for coats, blazers, and anything you want to wear for years.
Me&Em — Brilliant for a more grown-up take on elevated basics and knitwear. Sizing is generous and the brand is particularly well loved by women who find high street cuts skew too young.
Independent Picks (a couple of left-field finds I love):
Kitri Studio — A London-based independent label that hits a similar occasion-wear sweet spot to River Island but with considerably better quality and cut. Size range is UK 6–22 and their dresses are genuinely made to flatter. If you've been burned by River Island occasionwear before, Kitri is your answer.
Baukjen — A sustainable British womenswear brand producing beautifully considered basics and mid-season pieces. Think the kind of thing River Island aspires to in its more grown-up range, but done better and made to last. Sizing is inclusive and their fit notes on each product are genuinely useful.
