What is sizing like at Rodd & Gunn

Rodd & Gunn is a New Zealand heritage label built around that "work to the weekend" idea That heritage tells you a lot about the cut, the house cut leans true to size but generous — roomier through the body than fast-fashion equivalents, with a bit of breathing space built in for layering.

The good news is they've modernised. These days you'll find distinct fits across the range, and knowing which one you're looking at is half the battle:

  • Tailored Fit — their trimmest shirt cut, fitted through the chest and waist. If you're lean or athletic, this is your friend.

  • Sports Fit — fitted across the chest, slightly slimmer through the waist for a modern shape without being tight.

  • Classic / regular — the traditional relaxed cut. Comfortable, unfussy, roomier through the middle.

Fit, Garment by Garment

Here's how the main categories actually behave once they're on the body — the stuff you only learn from dressing people (and yourself) in it for years.

Shirts

  • The Classic fit shirts are genuinely relaxed — if you like a trim silhouette, go Tailored or Sports Fit instead, or you'll get billowing at the waist.

  • Sleeve length is generous, which is a gift if you've got long arms and a curse if you haven't — roll them or expect a bit of cuff bunching.

  • Take your normal collar size; the neck runs true.

Knitwear

  • This is where I came unstuck. The chunky knits and cardigans are cut deliberately roomy — stick to your true size unless you genuinely want an oversized weekend layer.

  • Merino and finer-gauge jumpers are closer to true to size and layer beautifully under a jacket.

Jackets & Outerwear

  • Their sports jackets, quilted gilets and wax-style outerwear are cut with layering room — there's space for a jumper underneath, so you rarely need to size up.

  • If you're buying a tailored jacket to wear over a shirt only, and you're between sizes, size down.

Trousers & Jeans

  • Moleskins, cords and chinos run true to the waist tab but sit with a comfortable, slightly relaxed leg — not skinny.

  • Check the inside leg carefully; the regular length is cut long, so shorter chaps will want a tailor's tack.

What to Buy & How to Style It

Rodd & Gunn is at its best when you lean into what it does properly rather than trying to make it something it isn't. The heroes here are the chunky shawl-collar knits, the moleskin trousers, the quilted gilets and the soft-shouldered sports jackets. This is textured, tactile, autumn-and-winter dressing — the kind of smart-casual that photographs like money without looking like you've tried.

My go-to formula for a client who wants that relaxed-but-put-together look:

  • Merino roll-neck + moleskin trousers + a suede desert boot. Simple, warm, quietly expensive-looking.

  • Oxford shirt (Sports Fit) under a chunky cardigan, sleeves pushed up, dark denim below. The classic "I own a nice cottage" uniform.

  • Quilted gilet over a fine-gauge jumper for that off-duty countryside layer that works just as well on a city Saturday.

On trend right now, the whole "quiet luxury" and heritage-texture movement is playing directly into Rodd & Gunn's hands — earthy tones, natural fibres, corduroy, and a rejection of loud logos. If you've been eyeing that aesthetic, this is one of the more affordable ways in.

Brands to Consider Alongside Rodd & Gunn

Post Image

Whether you love the look but want options at other price points, or you're not quite sure R&G is your fit, here's where I'd send clients — across every budget.

High Street

  • Crew Clothing — the closest high-street match for that coastal, country smart-casual world. Nautical-leaning, keenly priced, and cut on the relaxed side just like R&G.

  • FatFace — brilliant for the casual, textured weekend end of the wardrobe: soft cords, chunky jersey and easy layers, generally true to size.

Independent / Boutique

  • Peregrine — a proper British heritage knitwear maker turning out beautifully cut jumpers and jackets. If you want the R&G texture with more indie credibility, start here.

  • Private White V.C. — Manchester-made outerwear of serious quality. Their coats and quilted pieces have that "buy once, keep forever" ethos R&G talks about, executed impeccably.

  • Drake's — the English smart-casual specialists. Their shirts, knitwear and soft tailoring hit exactly the relaxed-elegant note, with a slightly trimmer cut than R&G.

Designer / Luxury

  • Loro Piana — the ultimate expression of quiet luxury. If you adore R&G's chunky cashmere and refined-country feel and money is no object, this is the summit.

  • Brunello Cucinelli — the elevated Italian version of everything R&G is reaching for: relaxed tailoring, luxurious knits and that effortless off-duty polish.
