What Is Sizing Like at Rotate Birger Christensen?

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026

Rotate Birger Christensen runs small and uses EU/Danish sizing, so my honest rule of thumb is to size up one from your usual UK number — if you’re normally a UK 10, reach for the EU 40 rather than the EU 38 a conversion chart would point you towards. The bust, shoulders and waist are where it pinches first, and the slinkier the fabric, the truer that is.

I’ve had a soft spot for Rotate for years. It’s the Copenhagen label founded by Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Madsen, and it has quietly become the patron saint of the wedding-guest dress — puff sleeves, sequins, bold prints and that nipped-in waist that photographs beautifully. But I’ll be straight with you, because that’s the whole point of Tellar: I once ordered a satin Rotate mini in my “normal” size for a press dinner, convinced the reviews were being dramatic. They were not. I spent the evening holding my breath and standing very still. Lesson learned, and now I’m passing it on so you don’t repeat it.

So, Does Rotate Run Small or Large?

Small — but not uniformly, which is exactly why people get caught out. The cut is built for drama (structured shoulders, cinched waists, curve-skimming fabric), so the fit is far more style-dependent than a simpler brand. Here’s how it breaks down garment by garment, based on real-world fit reviews and my own returns pile.

Mini and party dresses

  • These are the classic Rotate offenders. Satin, poplin and any non-stretch fabric run noticeably small through the bust and waist.

  • Bustier and strapless styles have zero give — if you’re a C-cup or above, size up and keep some fashion tape handy.

  • Hemlines are genuinely short. If you’re taller or just prefer coverage, factor that in before you fall in love.

Maxi and occasion dresses

  • Often cut slim through the waist even when the skirt is floaty. Curvier figures should size up.

  • The exception: smocked, ruched or stretch-panel styles. These are forgiving and usually true to size, so you can stick to your normal number.

Blouses and structured tops

  • Broadly true to size, but snug through the arms and across the chest.

  • If you carry width across the shoulders, the puff-sleeve tops are worth sizing up on for comfort.

Tailoring, knitwear and trousers

  • Boxy blazers and oversized outerwear are meant to be roomy — stay true to size, or even go down one if you want a sharper line.

  • Knitwear is reliably true to size.

  • Trousers run long in the leg with a snug waist — brilliant if you’re tall, but expect to tailor the hem if you’re under 5ft 5in.

My quick stylist cheat sheet

  • Size up for satin, sequin and non-stretch occasion pieces.

  • Stay true for knitwear, smocked dresses and anything with stretch.

  • Size down only for deliberately oversized blazers.

Where to Shop If You Love Rotate: High Street Picks

If you adore that bold, occasion-led, slightly retro Rotate energy but want it at a friendlier price, these are the high street names I send clients to. Each earns its place on relevance, not alphabetical order.

  • Coast — the high street’s occasionwear specialist; structured bodices and statement sleeves that scratch the Rotate itch directly.

  • Reiss — cleaner and more polished, ideal when you want the drama dialled down for a daytime event.

  • Whistles — modern prints and elegant midi shapes with that Scandi restraint Rotate fans gravitate to.

  • Phase Eight — reliable for embellished and occasion dresses that actually flatter a real waist.

  • Monsoon — sequins, beading and party sparkle without the designer price tag.

  • Ted Baker — bold florals and feminine silhouettes; the closest high street match for Rotate’s print-heavy pieces.

  • River Island — trend-led party dresses for when you want the look for one big night only.

  • Mango — the strongest high street option for a sculpted, statement occasion dress that looks far more expensive than it is.

Premium and Contemporary Alternatives

Sitting just below the designer tier, these labels share Rotate’s confidence and craft — worth it when you want something you’ll re-wear for years.

  • Ganni — the obvious Copenhagen cousin; same playful Scandi-cool, often a touch more relaxed in the fit.

  • Sandro — Parisian polish with feminine detailing; lovely for elevated occasion dressing.

  • Cefinn — sleek, grown-up occasionwear with proper structure, founded by Samantha Cameron.

Luxury and Designer Options

If you want to splurge on the real showstopper, these are the designer names I’d steer you towards for that same statement-dress drama.

  • The Attico — Italian glamour with a 70s edge; sequins and sharp tailoring done beautifully.

  • Saloni — bold prints and exquisite cuts; the print queen of the designer party dress.

  • Zimmermann — romantic, feminine and beautifully made — an investment-level wedding-guest favourite.

Two Independent Labels Worth Knowing

And because I never let a post go by without a couple of left-field names you won’t see everywhere:

  • Sleeper — the Ukrainian indie behind those feather-trimmed “walking sleepwear” pieces; pure party joy and genuinely re-wearable.

  • De La Vali — a London independent making vintage-inspired, slightly bohemian occasion dresses with a real sense of personality.

A final styling note from me: Rotate is best bought for a specific moment rather than your everyday rail. Get the size right first time and it’ll become the dress people remember you in. Get it wrong and it’ll sit unworn with the tags on — which is exactly the heartache I built Tellar to prevent.
