What Is Sizing Like at Salomon?

Salomon shoes are generally true to size in the UK — but there's a well-known quirk: several of the most popular styles, particularly the XT-6 and Speedcross, run slightly narrow and snug, which means going up half a size is something you'll want to seriously consider before clicking buy.

I'll be honest — I came to Salomon later than most. I was firmly a city-trainer person for years, convinced that anything with a lugged sole was for people who actually ran up mountains at weekends. Then a friend dragged me on a trail walk in the Peak District and I borrowed a pair of her Speedcross 6s because my Adidas Sambas were clearly not going to cut it. Within twenty minutes I was completely converted. The grip, the security, the way the shoe just holds your foot — nothing else feels quite like it. Naturally I went straight online to buy my own pair and confidently ordered my usual size. They arrived, they were tight, I sent them back and sized up half a size. Sorted. Lesson learned.

Do Salomon Shoes Run True to Size?

The short answer is: mostly yes, but with an asterisk. RunRepeat's wear tests confirm that the majority of Salomon shoes provide ample toe box space and run true to size — however, their speed-oriented and trail-performance styles are intentionally more snug and form-fitting. This is by design: Salomon was founded in the French Alps in 1947, and secure foot hold on uneven terrain is absolutely non-negotiable in their design brief.

  • Most trail and lifestyle styles (XT-6, Speedcross) — go half a size up. The sensiFIT upper wraps tightly around your foot, which is great for performance but can feel restrictive if you buy your usual size.

  • Hiking and outdoor styles (X Ultra, XA Pro 3D) — true to size; the fit is slightly more generous and forgiving.

  • Road running styles (Aero Glide, Aero Blaze) — true to size; these tend to have a slightly roomier forefoot than trail models.

Ella's tip: Buy your usual size if you have narrow-to-average feet and you're looking at the hiking range. Size up half if you're after the XT-6, Speedcross, or anything trail-performance. When in doubt, try in-store with the socks you actually plan to wear.

The QuickLACE System: What It Means for Fit

One of Salomon's signatures is their QuickLACE system — a single-pull bungee cord that tightens both sides of the shoe simultaneously, with a lace end that tucks neatly into a little pocket on the tongue. It's genuinely clever and I love it for trail running or hiking where you don't want to be faffing about re-tying laces mid-walk.

What's worth knowing is that QuickLACE distributes pressure evenly across the midfoot and creates a more locked-down feel than traditional laces. This is brilliant for performance but it does mean the shoe feels snugger than it might with conventional laces. It doesn't change the size you should order — but it does mean you can't loosen things off incrementally the way you would with standard laces. If you have wider feet and need a lot of lace adjustment to get comfortable, take note.

Salomon and Wide Feet: Know Before You Buy

This is where I'll be straight with you: Salomon is not the brand for wide feet. Their standard last is narrower than Nike, Adidas, and New Balance, and for the most part they only manufacture in a single standard width. The QuickLACE system does compensate to some degree, but if you genuinely need a wide fit, you'll likely find Salomon frustrating.

That said, a few models — the X Ultra 4, the Speedcross Wide, and the XA Pro 3D Wide — do come in a wider variant with approximately 12mm more forefoot volume than the standard fit. Worth checking availability on these if width is your concern.

GORE-TEX Versions: Do You Need to Size Up?

Post Image

No — but there are a couple of things to be aware of. The GORE-TEX membrane adds a thin waterproof layer inside the shoe which reduces internal volume marginally, meaning the fit feels slightly tighter than the non-GTX equivalent. You don't need to size up specifically for GORE-TEX, but if you already find standard Salomon on the snug side, it's worth being aware of. Also: plan to wear thick hiking socks with your GTX boots? Try the combination in-store. Thick socks plus GORE-TEX in your normal size can be a tight squeeze.

Salomon Clothing: How Does It Size?

Salomon's technical clothing — trail jackets, running tights, vests — follows standard EU sizing and generally runs true to size. Their women's fit is athletic and fairly close-cut, designed for performance movement rather than a relaxed everyday silhouette. I'd say it runs slightly slim through the torso, so if you're between sizes or carry more volume across the shoulders and back, go one size up. The fabrics are technical and don't have much give, so you want to feel comfortable moving in them rather than squeezed in.

Where Else to Shop: The Best Alternatives to Salomon

Salomon sits at the premium end of trail and outdoor footwear — they're a considered purchase. If you're looking for similar styling or performance at different price points, here's where I'd point you.

HIGH STREET & ACCESSIBLE

Great alternatives at accessible price points

  • Sweaty Betty — outstanding women's technical running and trail-adjacent kit. Their trainers have improved enormously and they're brilliant for the Gorpcore aesthetic. Sizing is true to size, slim fit.

  • Lululemon — known mainly for leggings but their footwear range is seriously impressive now. Technical, well-fitted, and the sizing is consistent. A strong Salomon alternative for casual trail-to-city looks.

  • Gymshark — more gym-focused but their running trainers have become genuinely good. Very accessible price point, true to size, good for beginners getting into trail-adjacent training.

  • Barbour — if you're after the outdoor heritage aesthetic rather than the technical performance angle, Barbour is a natural UK alternative. Their outdoor footwear is built to last and runs true to size.

  • Timberland — iconic outdoor brand with a strong grip-and-durability ethos, similar DNA to Salomon on the practical side. Tends to run wide, so worth trying in-store.

  • Superdry — strong in technical outerwear and trail-adjacent styling. Their shoes run true to size and the brand leans heavily into mountain and outdoor aesthetics.

  • Fat Face — brilliant for the practical, countryside-facing outdoor look. Not trail performance, but excellent casual outdoor shoes and clothing that hold up brilliantly in the British countryside.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — if you love the outdoor lifestyle aesthetic and want something with a bit of coastal, earthy character, Seasalt's footwear and outerwear is well-made and sizes true.

PREMIUM

A step up in performance and price

  • Hoka — maximum cushioning, excellent trail range, true to size with a slightly roomier toe box than Salomon. Brilliant if the narrow Salomon last isn't working for you.

  • On Running — Swiss trail and road performance, incredibly popular right now. True to size, same UK sizing as Salomon, slightly more relaxed fit feel through the midfoot.

  • Merrell — serious trail and hiking pedigree. Their Moab range is legendary for a reason. True to size, wider last than Salomon — much better for wider feet.

  • The North Face — a direct competitor in technical outdoor clothing and footwear. Their trail shoes run true to size and their women's clothing range is excellent quality.

LUXURY & DESIGNER

When the budget is no object

  • Moncler Grenoble — Salomon has actually collaborated with Moncler, and the Grenoble technical line is the crossover between high fashion and mountain performance. Incredible outerwear, European sizing.

  • Canada Goose — if you're hiking in serious cold, Canada Goose technical footwear and outerwear is on another level. Consistent sizing, invest-piece territory.

  • Bogner — German luxury sportswear brand with serious alpine heritage. Beautifully made outdoor and ski clothing. Runs European sizing, goes slightly slim on women's cuts.

INDEPENDENT & NICHE

Under-the-radar brands worth knowing

  • Finisterre — a brilliant Cornish brand built around sustainable outdoor and surf-adjacent clothing. Their technical outerwear and merino layers are exceptional, true-to-size with a relaxed athletic cut. Very much the anti-fast-fashion Gorpcore brand.

  • Artilect — a small, specialist UK trail running brand making seriously technical kit designed specifically for mountain and fell running. Niche, purposeful, and increasingly popular in trail running circles. Sizing is European and runs true.

The Final Verdict on Salomon Sizing

Salomon is a brilliant brand and their trail shoes genuinely earn their cult status — but you need to go in with your eyes open about the fit. The short version: size up half if you're buying the XT-6 or Speedcross, stay true to size for hiking and road-running styles, and be aware that the standard last is narrow. Try in-store wherever possible, especially if you have wider feet or you're buying GORE-TEX with thick socks in mind.

For their clothing, take your measurements and go true to size — the women's cut is athletic and close-fitting, so size up if you prefer a relaxed or layered fit. And if you're not sure how your measurements translate across brands, Tellar's Store Size Lookup takes the guesswork out entirely.
