What Is Sizing Like at Soft Goat?

Soft Goat runs true to size, but the cut you choose matters far more than the letter on the label. The Swedish cashmere brand sizes from XS to XL, and most styles fit exactly as you'd expect from your usual jumper size. The catch is that Soft Goat sells everything from skinny ribbed roll-necks to deliberately slouchy boyfriend cardigans, and those two ends of the range fit nothing alike. Pick the silhouette first, then size for it — that's the whole game.

I've been wearing and styling cashmere for years, and Soft Goat is one of the brands I reach for when a client wants proper quality without a designer price tag. So let me walk you through exactly how it fits, where it can trip you up, and how to land the right size first time.

So, what is sizing actually like at Soft Goat?

Honest answer: reliable. Soft Goat is a direct-to-consumer brand — they cut out the middlemen and sell from their own site — which means the sizing is consistent across the range rather than borrowed from a dozen different factories. In practice, here's what to expect:

  • Regular and fine-knit styles — true to size. Take your normal size and you'll get a neat, classic fit with a little ease.

  • Slim and ribbed styles — close to the body. If you're between sizes or like a roomier feel, size up.

  • Oversized cardigans and boyfriend jumpers — designed to be loose. These already have the slouch built in, so take your true size. Don't size up on top of an oversized cut unless you want to swim.

Here's my cashmere confession: I once ordered an oversized cardigan a size up because I'd convinced myself "cosy" meant "huge." It arrived looking less like effortless Scandi cool and more like I'd raided someone's dad's wardrobe. Lesson learned — with cashmere, the relaxed fit is already in the pattern. You don't need to chase it.

Why the knit changes everything

Soft Goat lists a gauge (gg) on most pieces, and it genuinely affects how a garment sits. The higher the gauge number, the finer and lighter the knit; the lower the number, the chunkier and heavier. It's worth knowing because the fit reads completely differently:

  • Fine knits (12–16gg) — lightweight, drape close to the body, brilliant for layering under blazers. These flatter most frames and rarely add bulk.

  • Chunky knits (3–7gg) — thick, structured and warm. They hold their shape rather than skim yours, so they can read a touch boxier. Petite frames may prefer sizing down here.

One more thing that's easy to forget: cashmere barely stretches, and Soft Goat's is the good stuff — graded between 15 and 19 microns with long 28–40mm fibres, knitted two-ply for durability. That quality is wonderful, but it also means a too-tight jumper won't "give" with wear the way a cheap acrylic might. Get the size right at checkout.

My styling tips for nailing the fit

  • Buy for your bust on jumpers, your shoulders on cardigans. These are the points cashmere can't fake.

  • Want a tucked-in, polished look? Go true to size in a fine knit and tuck into high-waisted trousers.

  • After that off-duty, sleeves-pushed-up feel? Choose a style already labelled relaxed or oversized rather than sizing up a fitted one.

  • Care for it properly — hand or wool-cycle wash at 30°C, never tumble, never use fabric softener. A well-kept Soft Goat jumper holds its shape for years, which is rather the point of investing.

My genuine win: I sized down into a fine-knit roll-neck in a soft oatmeal shade, expecting it to feel snug, and it turned out to be the most-worn thing I bought that whole winter. Sleek under a coat, perfect over slim trousers. Proof that with cashmere, "just right" beats "just in case."
