What Is Sizing Like at Sunspel?

Sunspel runs true to size but on the classic, slightly relaxed side. This isn't a slim-fit label chasing a gym silhouette, and it isn't the boxy, cropped streetwear cut either. It sits in that grown-up middle — clean through the shoulders, a little breathing room through the chest and waist, and a body length that runs a shade longer than most. That long hem is deliberate; it's what keeps the tee tucked and tidy. It also catches people out.

Here's how it breaks down across the pieces I get asked about most:

  • The Classic Crew Neck Tee — the icon. Regular fit, generous through the body, longer in the length. If you're between sizes or want it sitting closer to the frame, size down.

  • The Riviera Polo — cut trimmer and more retro than the tees, with a neat collar and shorter sleeve. This one is properly true to size, so take your normal.

  • Knitwear & overshirts — classic fit with just enough room to layer over a tee. True to size; only size up if you want it worn over a shirt.

  • Boxers, loungewear & sweats — spot on. No surprises, buy your usual.

  • Shirts & trousers — a considered, unfussy cut. Neither skinny nor baggy. True to size for most.

My quick sizing rules for Sunspel

  • Want a slimmer tee? Go one size down on the Classic — it'll still skim, not cling.

  • Tall or long in the torso? You'll love the extra length. Everyone else, that hem is easy to tuck.

  • Wash it cold. Sunspel's cottons — Sea Island, Supima, their Q75 — barely shrink if you treat them right, so don't buy up expecting it to grow into you.

  • Layering under a jacket? Stick to your true size; the classic cut already leaves room.

How I'd style it (and what's landing right now)

The whole point of Sunspel is that it disappears into an outfit in the best way. A white Classic Tee under an unstructured navy overshirt, straight-leg trousers, and a pair of clean leather trainers is my failsafe — smart enough for the office, easy enough for a Saturday. That's very much where menswear is sitting in 2026: quiet luxury has stopped being a buzzword and become the default, and it lives or dies on the quality of your basics.

A confession, since honesty is the whole game here: years ago I turned up to a client's product launch in a designer tee that cost a small fortune and looked, under the lights, exactly like a bin bag with a logo. Meanwhile my assistant wore a plain Sunspel crew and looked twice as expensive. Lesson learned. Fit and fabric beat labels every single time — and that's a philosophy Sunspel has been selling for over 160 years. Right now I'd lean into Riviera polos in muted tones, heavier loopback sweatshirts, and a good overshirt doing the job a blazer used to.

If you love Sunspel, you'll want these too

Sunspel occupies a lovely niche — beautifully made, understated, built to last. Here are the brands I send clients to when they want that same energy, across three tiers so there's something at every budget.

High street

  • Uniqlo — the best-value quality tee going. Their Supima cotton crews give you a huge slice of the Sunspel feel for a fraction of the price. Fit runs slimmer, so it's a great slim alternative.

  • Arket — Scandi restraint and genuinely good cotton. Their heavyweight tees and knitwear sit right in Sunspel's world of grown-up basics.

  • Reiss — when you want the elevated end of the high street: cleaner lines, a slightly sharper cut, and polos that dress up nicely.

Independent & boutique

  • Asket — the Swedish "permanent collection" label built entirely around perfecting the basics. Full sizing including length options, so brilliant if you're tall or between sizes.

  • Merz b. Schwanen — German heritage tees made on old loopwheel machines. Weighty, characterful, and about as close as it gets to Sunspel's obsession with the T-shirt.

  • Colhay's — for knitwear specifically. A small British label doing gorgeous fine-gauge merino that pairs perfectly with a Sunspel tee underneath.

Designer & luxury

  • Officine Générale — French elevated essentials with a slightly sharper, more tailored line. The step up when you want Sunspel's ease with a little more polish.

  • Zimmerli of Switzerland — the last word in luxury underwear and loungewear. If Sunspel's boxers are your thing, this is the indulgent upgrade.

Seven brands, three budgets, and not a compromise on quality in the lot — pick your tier and you can't go far wrong.
