What is Sizing Like at Superdry?

Superdry runs small — often noticeably so — and if you've never bought from them before, I'd strongly recommend going up at least one size from your usual UK size, particularly in their outerwear and hoodies. This is the single most consistent piece of feedback I hear from women shopping the brand, and it caught me out myself years ago when I grabbed a hoodie in my normal size and couldn't get it comfortably over my shoulders. Sized up once, it was perfect. Sized up again in a jacket, even better. That pattern holds across most of the range.

The reason comes down to Superdry's origins. The brand launched in 2003 with a heavy Japanese streetwear influence — think bold graphics, tight-cut silhouettes, and garment proportions closer to Japanese sizing than British. Even as the brand has evolved and expanded, that slightly narrower, shorter cut has stayed baked into the DNA of their pieces. It's worth knowing before you click "add to basket."

Superdry Size Guide: UK Conversion

Superdry uses standard UK sizing labels, but the fit runs small — use your measurements rather than your usual label size, and pay attention to the garment-specific notes below.

Ella's tip: If you're on the border between two sizes at Superdry, always go up — especially in zip-up hoodies, padded jackets, and anything with a fitted cuff. The upper body proportions run narrow, and there's very little ease built in.

How Superdry Fits: Garment by Garment

Superdry does several things brilliantly — outerwear, casual knitwear, denim — and sizing is slightly different across each category. Here's what to expect.

  • Jackets & Outerwear: This is where the small sizing bites hardest. Their iconic padded jackets, puffer coats, and windbreakers are consistently cut narrow across the shoulders and chest. If you have any volume across the back or bust, I'd go up two sizes with confidence. Their outerwear is worth it — the quality and warmth is genuinely good — but do not buy without checking your measurements first.

  • Hoodies & Sweatshirts: Superdry hoodies are popular for good reason — the weight of the fabric is excellent, the logo detailing is understated enough to wear as an adult, and they wash well. That said, they come up short in the body and tight across the shoulders. Size up one for a comfortable relaxed fit, or two if you want that oversized, thrown-on look.

  • T-Shirts & Tops: These are probably the most forgiving category. Basic tees run slightly small but closer to standard than the outerwear. If you're a UK 10–12, an M will usually work. That said, the body length can be short — if you're tall, bear this in mind.

  • Denim & Trousers: Superdry's jeans have improved significantly in recent years. They use standard waist and leg sizing, and the fit is closer to true-to-size than most of the clothing. Check the rise — their jeans tend toward mid-rise and can run slightly snug on the hip and thigh if you carry volume there. Size up if in any doubt.

  • Knitwear: Their knits are a genuine highlight — chunky, well-made, and great value. These are the most generous pieces in the range. You'll likely find your usual size works, or even that you could size down if you want a fitted look.

  • Dresses: Superdry's dress range is smaller than their casualwear offering, but what they do is generally easy to size in — particularly the more relaxed shapes. Use your bust measurement as your guide and go up one if you're between sizes.

Height & Proportions: Worth Knowing

This is something that doesn't get mentioned enough with Superdry: their garments are cut with a fairly short body length in mind. If you're above about 5'7", you may find their hoodies sit slightly above the hip and their tees don't quite reach where you'd like them to. There's no easy fix for this — it's just worth knowing going in so you're not surprised. Tall women often find this is the main issue rather than width or circumference. If body length matters to you, check the listed garment measurements carefully before buying.

My Overall Verdict on Superdry Sizing

Post Image

The brand has made some efforts to update their fit over the years and they've added more inclusive sizing to parts of the range — which is welcome. But the core casualwear and outerwear still runs small and narrow compared to UK high street standards. My consistent advice: measure yourself properly (bust, waist, hips — takes two minutes), compare to the size guide on their website, and when in doubt, go up. You can always belt a slightly larger jacket. You cannot magic extra fabric into one that's too tight across the back.

The good news is that Superdry's quality really has improved. The jackets in particular have become genuinely brilliant — warm, well-finished, and built to last. It's a brand worth buying from, you just need to approach the sizing with your eyes open.

Alternatives at Every Budget: The Same Casual-Cool Energy

Superdry sits in that outdoorsy, relaxed-but-put-together zone that a lot of brands are doing well right now. If you love the aesthetic but want something that fits more generously, or you're building a wider casual wardrobe, here's where I'd look.

🛍 HIGH STREET PICKS

  • Fat Face — One of my absolute go-tos for casual, quality British clothing that fits properly. Their hoodies, fleeces, and lightweight jackets are beautifully made and sized generously. A brilliant alternative for anyone who loves Superdry's relaxed outdoor vibe but wants a more comfortable fit.

  • Joules — Quintessentially British casual with excellent outerwear, particularly their waterproof jackets and gilets. Sizing is reliable and runs true to UK standard. Great for layering and countryside-ready dressing.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — A brand I genuinely love for its quality and personality. Their jackets, knitwear, and casual layers are cut well for real bodies and the fabrics are excellent. Strong sustainable credentials too.

  • Barbour — If you're investing in outerwear, Barbour is the British heritage answer to Superdry's outdoor-influenced jackets. Their quilted and waxed pieces are iconic, long-lasting, and worth every penny. Sizing runs true to UK.

  • Hollister — For the casual, youthful energy of Superdry at a lower price point, Hollister does it well — particularly hoodies and casual layers. Sizes run slightly small so go up one here too.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — A&F has had a brilliant glow-up in recent years. Their casual and outdoor-adjacent pieces are well made, properly fitted, and feel like a more grown-up version of that casual American/outdoors aesthetic. Their sizing has also become much more inclusive.

  • The Gap — For basics done brilliantly. If you want well-priced, properly fitting hoodies, casual trousers, and T-shirts in the same spirit as Superdry but with more reliable sizing, The Gap is consistently excellent. Their hoodies especially are a wardrobe staple.

  • Urban Outfitters — A good pick for the more fashion-forward, graphic-led side of Superdry's offering. Their casualwear and outerwear has a lot of crossover appeal, and they carry more oversized, relaxed sizing options that suit the aesthetic well.

✨ PREMIUM PICKS

  • Gant — A premium Scandinavian brand with beautiful casual outerwear, knitwear, and weekend-ready clothing. Sizing is generally true to UK and the quality is noticeably higher. If you're looking to invest in a step up from Superdry's casual-outdoor territory, Gant is a natural move.

  • Tommy Hilfiger — The relaxed Americana aesthetic has significant crossover with Superdry's casual DNA. Their outerwear, knitwear, and casualwear are well-made, well-sized, and have a timeless quality that makes them a better long-term investment.

💎 INDEPENDENT & NICHE PICKS

  • Passenger Clothing — An under-the-radar British sustainable brand that makes brilliant outdoor-inspired casual clothing — hoodies, fleeces, overshirts, and jackets — in organic and recycled fabrics. The quality is outstanding, the fit is excellent (and generous), and the aesthetic is perfectly in line with what Superdry does best. A genuine hidden gem that deserves far more attention.

  • Finisterre — A Cornish brand built around cold-water surfing and the outdoors, Finisterre makes some of the most beautiful, hardwearing, and thoughtfully designed casual outerwear you'll find anywhere. Their Windstopper fleeces and padded jackets are extraordinary. If Superdry outerwear is your thing but you want something a level up in design and sustainability, Finisterre is the answer.
