What Is Sizing Like at Toast?

Toast runs true to size, but with a deliberately relaxed, generous cut — so if you prefer a more fitted silhouette, you'll almost certainly want to size down by one.
I have a complicated but deeply affectionate relationship with Toast. The first thing I ever bought from them was a linen shirt dress about six years ago — and I bought my usual size without thinking. It swamped me. I looked less "artisan bohemian chic" and more "forgot to get dressed properly." Rookie mistake. Once I sized down, it was an absolute dream. That dress is still hanging in my wardrobe and I wear it every single summer. The point is: Toast's silhouettes are intentional. They design for ease, movement, and that effortlessly thrown-together look. Understanding how their sizing works is the difference between wearing the clothes and being buried in them.
The Toast Sizing Philosophy
Toast is a British brand through and through, and they use standard UK sizing — but the actual fit tends to sit on the generous side of that, particularly across the shoulders and through the body. Their aesthetic is rooted in artisan craft, natural fabrics and an unfussy, relaxed approach to dressing. That very much translates to how their garments are cut.
Tops, blouses and shirts: tend to be roomy — size down if you want anything that skims rather than drapes.
Trousers and jeans: fairly true to size but with a relaxed leg and rise — check the inseam, as Toast tends to cut for a longer length.
Knitwear: generous and oversized by design — most styles are intentionally slouchy, so your usual size works well unless you want a more fitted look.
Dresses: vary by style, but their loose, drop-waist and A-line silhouettes are naturally forgiving. Shift or more tailored styles — size down.
Coats and jackets: cut wide across the shoulders and back to allow layering. True to size or size down depending on how much layering you plan underneath.
Toast Size Conversion Table
Toast uses standard UK sizing, running from a UK 6 to a UK 20. Below is a quick conversion guide:

My tip: Always measure your bust and hips before ordering from Toast, and cross-reference against their specific product measurements where listed — they do vary quite a bit between styles.
What Toast Does Really Well (And Where To Be Careful)

Toast's natural fabrics — linen, cotton, wool, silk — are genuinely beautiful. But they do behave differently in the wash. Linen will soften with wear and washing, and may shrink slightly on the first wash. I always go for the larger size in linen pieces for exactly this reason, then wash before wearing to pre-shrink. Their wool pieces should be treated as hand-wash or dry-clean only — I learned that the hard way with a beautiful marled jumper that came out, shall we say, extremely cropped.
Toast also offers some One Size (OS) pieces, which are designed for a UK 8–16 range. In my experience these work best for UK 10–14 — at either end of the spectrum you may find the fit less flattering.
If You Love Toast, You'll Also Love These...
Toast occupies a lovely but specific niche — artisan aesthetic, natural fabrics, relaxed tailoring, considered design. Here are my picks across different price points for when Toast is out of stock, out of budget, or simply not quite right for a particular occasion.
High Street
Anthropologie — The closest high street match to Toast's boho-luxe sensibility. Beautiful prints, natural fabrics, and a similarly relaxed fit philosophy. A go-to for that same artistic, effortless feel.
Jigsaw — Understated, beautifully made, and perennially elegant. If you love Toast's restrained colour palette and quality fabrics, Jigsaw delivers at a slightly lower price point.
White Stuff — Brilliant for the easy, relaxed dressing that Toast does so well, with a particularly strong linen and cotton offering in summer.
Seasalt Cornwall — Wonderful for everyday relaxed dressing with an emphasis on natural fabrics and earthy tones. Very much in the same spirit as Toast's more casual pieces.
Boden — Reliable quality, true British sensibility, and a great range of the kind of relaxed-but-put-together pieces that Toast excels at. Excellent knitwear especially.
Fat Face — A solid choice for casual Toast-adjacent dressing — particularly great for weekend and outdoor pieces in natural tones.
Hush — A brilliant mid-range pick for the kind of effortlessly stylish, considered basics that Toast fans tend to reach for again and again. Very wearable, great quality.
Me&Em — If you want that elevated, thoughtful dressing that Toast delivers but in a slightly more polished, everyday direction, Me&Em is your answer.
Premium
Sézane — The French answer to Toast's quietly artisan approach. Beautiful fabrics, considered design, and that same feeling of clothes that improve with time and wear.
Claudie Pierlot — Slightly more polished than Toast but shares that same love of beautiful fabric and effortless femininity. Brilliant for transitional dressing.
Luxury / Designer
Max Mara — For the kind of investment-piece, beautifully crafted coats and tailoring that Toast quietly aspires to. Timeless, exceptional quality, worth every penny.
Bamford — A British luxury brand with the same values as Toast — sustainability, craftsmanship, natural fabrics — but at a higher price point. If you love what Toast stands for, Bamford is a natural step up.
Independent Picks
Beaumont Organic — A UK sustainable label making understated, beautiful pieces in organic and natural fabrics. Very much in the Toast spirit — considered, quiet, and beautifully made. Brilliant for those who want to shop more independently.
Chalk UK — A small Bristol-based brand with the same relaxed, natural aesthetic as Toast but at a slightly more accessible price point. A real hidden gem and well worth exploring if you haven't yet.
