What Is Sizing Like at Topshop topman ?

Topshop, you're really shopping Topman — the two are back together under one roof — and the honest answer is that it runs slim and young. Order your usual size and there's a fair chance it'll feel a touch tight through the chest and shoulders. My standing rule with this label: size up one, especially on anything structured.

The fit, in plain terms

Topman has always cut for a lean, youthful frame, and even the relaxed pieces start from that baseline. Here's what actually catches men out:

  • Tops and knitwear sit close through the chest and arm. Between two sizes? Take the larger one.

  • Denim in skinny and slim cuts comes up small. The newer straight and barrel-leg styles are far truer to the label.

  • Tailoring and outerwear are the slimmest of the lot. A Topman 40 does not wear like a 40 anywhere else — go up.

  • Consistency wanders between styles, so treat the number on the tag as a starting point, not gospel.

A quick confession from early in my career: I bought a Topman suit in my "usual" 40 for a shoot, and the jacket simply wouldn't do up across the chest. Swapped it for a 42 and it hung beautifully. Lesson learned — here, the size on the label is a suggestion, not a promise.

What to buy right now

The good news for 2026 is that the ultra-slim era has loosened. Straight and barrel-leg denim is the move — reach for a classic indigo or an on-trend brown wash, then keep it simple with a heavy plain tee and either trainers or hiker boots. Up top, an open overshirt worn over a tee, or a proper rugby stripe, is the easy weekend win. If you're broad or muscular, lean into these relaxed cuts rather than wrestling with the slim ones — you'll look sharper and feel far more comfortable.

Brands I'd send you to

If Topman's cut isn't playing ball, here's where I'd point you across three price tiers.

HIGH STREET

  • Reiss — grown-up, sharper tailoring than Topman with noticeably better cloth. It's also cut slim and runs small, so size up one from your Topman number.

  • COS — the antidote if slim isn't for you: boxy, architectural, relaxed. Buy your true size and let it drape.

  • Arket — clean Scandinavian basics that fit generously and wash well. True size, or size down a notch if you like it neat.

INDEPENDENT & BOUTIQUE

  • Percival — a London label doing characterful knits and shirts with a roomier, more forgiving cut and genuine personality.

  • Wax London — boxy overshirts and textured knitwear in a relaxed fit; brilliant for layering over a tee without any of the Topman tightness.

DESIGNER & LUXURY

  • Paul Smith — British tailoring at its finest; slim and classic like Topman, but a different league entirely on fabric and finish.

  • AMI Paris — a clean French cut, slim-to-regular, home of the heart-logo tee that's quietly become a modern staple.
