What Is Sizing Like at U.S. Polo Assn?

U.S. Polo Assn generally runs true to size, but with a generous, relaxed cut on its classic pieces. If you're a solid medium in most high-street brands, you'll be a medium here too — but expect a bit more room through the chest and body than you'd get from a slim European label. Order your usual size for a classic look; size down or pick the slim-fit line if you like things closer to the body.

How the tops and polos fit

The polo shirt is the brand's bread and butter, and it comes in two cuts that behave very differently. The classic fit is roomy — cut for comfort and movement rather than to hug you. The slim fit is a proper trimmer shape through the torso and arms. I once grabbed a classic-fit polo online without checking, expecting the tailored look I'd seen on the model, and ended up with something I could've fit a rucksack under. Lesson learned: always check which cut you're buying.

As a rough guide on chest measurements:

  • Small lands around a 36–38" chest

  • Medium around 38–40"

  • Large around 40–42"

  • XL around 42–44", and the range runs all the way up to 5XL, which is genuinely useful if bigger brands usually leave you short

One honest caveat: the 100% cotton tees can shrink after a hot wash — I've seen a good inch come off the length. Wash cool, dry flat, and you'll keep the fit you paid for.

How the trousers and shorts fit

Bottoms are sized by the waist in inches, which takes the guesswork out. Trousers come with either a fixed or an elasticated waistband, and that choice matters:

  • Fixed waist gives a sharper, more structured line — better for smart-casual

  • Elasticated waist has a touch of give, handy after lunch, but reads more relaxed

  • Leg length is the thing to watch — the standard inside leg sits around 32" on fixed styles and 30" on elasticated, with no separate short or long options. If you're tall, factor that in before you buy

The cargo shorts and chinos come up true to size in my experience, so trust your waist number.

How to nail your size first time

Don't guess from memory. Grab a soft tape and take two measurements: your chest at the widest point (just under the arms) and your natural waist. Compare those to the brand's own numbers rather than relying on your "usual" letter, because a medium at one label is rarely a medium at the next. That five-minute job is the difference between a shirt you love and a return label.
