What Is Sizing Like At Urban Code?

Urban Code (often written as Urbancode) runs to standard UK sizing — UK 6 through UK 18, mapped XXS to XXL — and on the whole it’s a brand I’d call reliable, with one or two fit quirks you need to know about before you click buy. Founded in London in 2008, Urbancode has built its name on serious outerwear: faux fur coats, real leather bikers, reversible parkas and the kind of statement jacket that makes a chunky knit and jeans feel intentional rather than thrown-on. Get the size right, and you’ve got a wardrobe workhorse for years. Get it wrong, and you’ll be swimming in faux fur or pulling a leather sleeve over your watch all day. Let me walk you through what I’ve learned.

How Urban Code Sizing Actually Fits

The brand’s own size chart is refreshingly conventional — UK 6 is XXS, UK 18 is XXL, and it tracks neatly across to standard European and US numbers. That’s the easy part. The bit that trips people up is that Urbancode is overwhelmingly an outerwear brand, so the fit conversation is really a fit-over-other-clothes conversation.

Here’s my honest, stylist’s take on how their main categories wear:

  • Faux fur coats and gilets — true to size, but cut generously through the body to allow layering. If you want a sleek, hugged-in shape over a slip dress, consider sizing down. If you want to wear it over a chunky polo neck, stay put.

  • Real leather biker jackets — snug across the shoulders and bust on first wear. Leather softens and moulds over the first month, so don’t panic if it feels a touch tight at the underarm. Resist the urge to size up unless you genuinely can’t move your arms.

  • Oversized bombers and varsity styles — already designed to be roomy. Take your usual UK size unless you’re petite and want a cropped silhouette, in which case go down one.

  • Reversible jackets and parkas — these are the brand’s signature, and they’re engineered to fit either way round. They sit true to size but expect a slightly fuller body to accommodate the double construction.

  • Trousers (their newer barrel-leg and tailored pieces) — relaxed through the leg with a true-to-size waist. The barrel cut needs the room to do its thing, so don’t be tempted to size down for a slimmer look.

A small confession from me

I once ordered an Urbancode reversible faux fur coat in my usual UK 10 and panicked when it arrived feeling enormous in the shoulders. I almost sent it back. Then I tried it the other way round — suede side out — over a fine knit, and it was suddenly everything. Lesson learned: with reversibles, always try it both ways before deciding the size is wrong. The interior side is often cut a touch fuller to allow the exterior to drape, which is the whole point of the design.

How to Measure Yourself Before You Buy

Sizing tools are only as good as the numbers you feed them. Grab a soft tape and check these three:

  • Bust — across the fullest part, tape level, not pulled tight.

  • Waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.

  • Hips — the widest point, generally about 20cm below your natural waist.

Once you have those numbers locked in, Urban Code’s sizing becomes very predictable. Where it gets murky is when you compare it against the wider high street, because every brand fits differently — and that’s precisely the problem Tellar was built to solve.

Where Else To Shop If You Love The Urban Code Look

If Urbancode’s fashion-forward outerwear is your love language, these are the brands I’d push you towards next. They’re my honest stylist picks based on cut, quality and that same statement-outerwear energy.

High Street Recommendations

  • Mango — properly underrated for outerwear. Their faux fur, leather and oversized coat range punches well above its price point.

  • River Island — go-to for biker jackets and faux fur coats with a bit of personality. Sizing runs slightly small in leather, so size up.

  • Urban Outfitters — closest in mood to Urbancode itself, especially for borg, shearling and varsity bombers.

  • Hush — beautifully soft suede jackets, considered leather bikers and grown-up reversibles.

  • Phase Eight — strong on smarter occasion outerwear and faux fur trims. Cuts run true and elegant.

  • Mint Velvet — relaxed-luxe leather jackets and bonded suede coats. Their sizing is generous through the body, which suits the slouchy aesthetic.

  • Whistles — sharp, minimalist leather jackets and trenches if you want the Urbancode sensibility with cleaner tailoring.

Premium & Designer Picks

  • AllSaints — the British biker-jacket benchmark. Sizing runs slim and shoulders are cut narrow — try in person if you can.

  • Reiss — for the sleek, sculpted leather jacket and the perfect wool overcoat. Cleaner lines than Urbancode but the same fashion-led brain.

  • Max Mara — for the lifetime coat. Their teddy bear, cashmere and camel-hair pieces are the luxury benchmark, and the cut is famously forgiving.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

  • Helen Moore — a British faux fur specialist based in Devon, hand-making coats, gilets and accessories that genuinely rival the designer end. Sizing is generous and built for layering.

  • Aligne — London-based, sustainability-led label producing some of the most thoughtfully cut tailored coats and leather pieces on the market right now. Sits beautifully alongside an Urbancode wardrobe.
