What Is Sizing Like at Wanderdoll? An Honest Stylist's Guide

Wanderdoll runs small. If you take one thing from this post, take that. Their pieces are cut close to the body — designed to skim, cling and corset rather than skim politely past — and the brand's house silhouette assumes you want a snug, second-skin fit rather than anything floaty. Most of my clients order one size up from their usual UK size, and on the corsets and bodysuits, sometimes two.

I've styled Wanderdoll pieces on shoots, watched clients agonise over their basket at midnight, and personally returned a size 8 mesh top that I genuinely thought might have shipped from the children's section by mistake. So let's talk about what's actually going on with their fit — and how to land the right size first time.

A Quick Word on Who Wanderdoll Is

Wanderdoll is a British independent label sitting squarely in the fairy-grunge, hyperfeminine-meets-alternative space — think mesh layering, corseted dresses, slip cuts, cut-outs, lace, ribbons, and the sort of going-out pieces that get screenshotted on Pinterest the second they drop. The brand has a cult-y, witchy aesthetic that's grown a serious online following, and their drops sell out fast. Which makes nailing your size first time around even more important — by the time you've returned and reordered, the piece is gone.

The Honest Sizing Verdict, Piece by Piece

Wanderdoll doesn't fit one consistent way across the range — different categories run differently, and once you know the pattern, the brand becomes much easier to shop. Here's how it actually breaks down.

At-a-glance fit guide

  • Mesh tops & baby tees: Run very small. Size up one, sometimes two.

  • Corsets & bustier tops: Run small and structured. Size up, and measure your underbust honestly.

  • Slip dresses & mini dresses: Run small-to-true. Size up if you're between sizes or want any drape across the bust.

  • Maxi dresses with stretch: Closer to true-to-size, but the bust is the make-or-break measurement.

  • Skirts & mini skirts: Run small on the waist. Go up one.

  • Trousers (when stocked): Largely true-to-size on the waist, snug through the hip.

  • Outerwear & jackets: Cut slim and short. Size up if you want to layer underneath.

Mesh, lace and cut-out tops

This is where the most returns happen, and where I want you to be the most cautious. Wanderdoll's mesh and lace tops are cut for a body-conscious silhouette — narrow shoulders, short body, snug arms — and the fabric has very little give in many of the lace and woven mesh styles. My general rule: size up one from your UK high street size, and if you're long in the torso or fuller through the chest, consider two.

Corsets, bustiers and bodysuits

Wanderdoll's corsets are properly structured — boning, hook-and-eye closures, no kidding around. They are not the soft-stretch corset tops you'll find on the high street. Measure your underbust, your overbust, and your natural waist before ordering, and trust those numbers over the size label. If you're between sizes on a corset, always go up — a too-tight corset is uncomfortable and unwearable, but a slightly loose one can be styled with layers.

Slip dresses and mini dresses

The slip dresses are some of their strongest pieces, and they generally sit closer to true-to-size than the tops — but the cut is narrow through the bust and hip. If you have a fuller bust (D+), size up. If you're pear-shaped through the hip, size up. The length is mini-to-very-mini on most styles, so check the model height and length measurement before ordering — what looks like a thigh-grazing dress on a 5'10" model can land mid-thigh on someone shorter.

Skirts and bottoms

The mini skirts run small on the waist — they're designed to sit low and snug — so I size up one almost every time. Their trousers, when they stock them, are closer to true-to-size on the waist but cling through the hip and thigh in classic Wanderdoll fashion.

Stylist Tips Before You Click Buy

  • Measure yourself first, every time. Bust, underbust, natural waist, hip. Wanderdoll publishes garment measurements on most product pages — use them, not the size label.

  • Read the fabric composition. A piece with elastane will be far more forgiving than a 100% woven mesh or polyester satin. The brand uses both, and the difference between them is a full size of wearability.

  • Check the model's height and size. Wanderdoll usually lists what their model is wearing. Compare it honestly to your own frame rather than just eyeballing it.

  • Mind the lengths. Mini means mini here. If you're 5'2" or under, factor it in. If you're 5'8"+, double-factor it in.

  • Returns can be slow on indie brands. Their drops sell out — by the time your return is processed and you re-order, the piece may be gone. Better to nail it first time.

A client of mine — a size 10 in everything from Zara to Reiss — ordered a Wanderdoll lace corset top in a 10 last summer for a Mykonos trip. It arrived and wouldn't hook past the second clasp. We exchanged it for a 12, which fit beautifully and looked phenomenal layered under a slip dress. The 10 wasn't badly made — it was just cut for a different body. That's the brand all over. Treat the size label as a suggestion, the measurements as gospel.

If You Love Wanderdoll's Vibe — Where Else to Shop

Wanderdoll has a very specific aesthetic, but plenty of other brands cover similar ground — feminine-with-an-edge, party-ready, slip-and-lace territory — with sizing that's a bit less of a tightrope. These are the labels I send clients to when they want the same energy with a kinder returns experience.

High Street Picks

  • Mango — Genuinely one of the best high street brands for slip dresses, lace pieces, corset detailing and going-out separates that flirt with that Wanderdoll aesthetic. Sizing runs true, and their fabric quality on satin and lace has improved hugely.

  • Zara — The high street's most reliable source of trend-led, body-conscious pieces. Their party drops every season often hit the same Y2K-feminine notes as Wanderdoll. Be warned: Zara's own sizing is inconsistent (whole different post), but the aesthetic match is strong.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — Their party and going-out line has had a serious glow-up. Body-con slip dresses, cami sets and corset-detail tops in proper fabric. Sizing runs slightly small in their party line — size up one.

  • Hollister — For the Y2K end of Wanderdoll's range: low-rise denim, baby tees, ribbed cami sets. Sizing is US-cut so it runs slightly larger than UK equivalents.

  • Reiss — When you want the grown-up, elevated version of a Wanderdoll slip. Their silk and satin slip dresses, mesh-overlay pieces and minimalist tailoring all sit beautifully in this aesthetic if you're after something more polished.

  • Claudie Pierlot — French label with a feminine-with-edge sensibility — lace blouses, ribbon-tie dresses, soft tailoring with romantic detailing. Sizing is small (French cut), so size up one.

  • Oliver Bonas — Underrated for romantic going-out pieces, slip dresses and statement jewellery to layer with a Wanderdoll look. Sizing is generous and consistent.

  • Anthropologie — For the dreamier, fairy-leaning end of the Wanderdoll spectrum — lace trims, vintage-feeling slip dresses, layering camisoles. Their sizing runs true but the cuts tend to skew US-roomy.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

  • Rat & Boa — A London-based indie label that's become a cult name for slip dresses, sheer overlays and dramatic going-out pieces with serious presence. The same fairy-grunge, hyperfeminine energy as Wanderdoll, with a slightly more polished finish. Sizing runs small — size up one.

  • Sister Jane — A British indie known for romantic, slightly vintage-feeling party pieces — puff sleeves, ribbon bows, lace, embellishment. The softer, more whimsical sister-aesthetic to Wanderdoll's sharper edge. Sizing runs true-to-size with a slim cut through the bust.

Premium and Luxury Options

  • Ted Baker — Premium pick for occasion dressing with feminine detail — embellished slips, lace-trimmed pieces, party tailoring. Sizing is their own numbered system (0–5) which baffles everyone the first time — use their conversion guide religiously.

  • Calvin Klein — For the minimalist-luxe end of the slip-dress conversation. Their silk and satin slips are investment pieces that will outlive every trend. Sizing runs true.

  • Max Mara — Luxury silk slip dresses, lingerie-inspired separates, beautifully cut soft tailoring. Investment-level pricing, but pieces that hold their shape and value. Sizing is European-cut and runs slightly small.

Final Word

Wanderdoll is one of the more rewarding indie brands to shop — once you've cracked the fit logic. The pieces are distinctive, the aesthetic is genuinely their own, and the quality on their structured pieces (corsets in particular) is markedly better than the high street equivalent. Just don't trust the size label. Trust the measurements, size up on tops and corsets, and read the fabric composition before you commit.

And if you'd rather skip the maths entirely — that's exactly what Tellar's for. One measure, 1,500 brands, no more midnight basket-meltdowns.
