What Is Sizing Like at Weird Fish? An Honest Stylist’s Fit Guide

Weird Fish generally runs slightly generous, so most women can stick to their usual UK size and feel comfortable — but the fit isn’t consistent across the range, and a couple of pieces will catch you out if you order on autopilot. It’s a brand I genuinely rate: Cotswold-born, more than 25 years in the game, and best known for those triple-twist Macaroni sweatshirts and tongue-in-cheek Artist tees. The catch is that “your size” at Weird Fish depends heavily on what you’re buying. Let me talk you through it properly.

So, is Weird Fish true to size?

Mostly, yes — it leans a touch large rather than small, which is why so many regulars happily size down. One thing worth knowing: like a lot of British heritage brands, Weird Fish sources fabrics and garments from several different manufacturers. That’s precisely why a fleece and a dress in the same labelled size won’t always behave identically. The upside is a 90-day returns window and free UK returns, so ordering two sizes to compare is genuinely low-risk.

How each category actually fits

Here’s my category-by-category breakdown after years of styling clients (and shopping it myself):

  • Macaroni sweatshirts & fleeces — the signature pieces. Relaxed and roomy, built for layering. The zip-ups in particular tend to run large around the waist, so if you’re between sizes or want a closer shape, size down.

  • Artist tees & tops — true to size, but the organic cotton can shrink a touch in a warm wash. Buy your normal size and wash cool to be safe.

  • Dresses & tunics — generous and forgiving, cut for comfort. Lovely if you like an easy shape; size down if you want a little more definition.

  • Trousers & jeans — the outlier. These can come up snug through the hips and thighs even when the waist is spot on. Walking trousers also tend to run long in the leg, so shorter frames may need a quick hem.

  • Knitwear & fleece jackets — cosy and relaxed, broadly true to size with room to layer underneath.

My honest experience

My first Macaroni was a real lesson. I bought it in my usual 12 and practically swam in it — swapped for a 10 and it was perfect, with just enough room for a long-sleeve underneath. Buoyed by that, I ordered their walking trousers in the same 10: the waist was bang on, but the hem pooled around my ankles like I’d borrowed them from someone six inches taller. That’s Weird Fish in a nutshell — brilliant quality, but you have to read each piece on its own terms rather than trusting the label. The tunic dresses, for what it’s worth, have never let me down: generous, soft and endlessly washable.

If you’re drawn to that easy, outdoorsy, print-led look, here’s where I’d send you across every budget.

High street

  • Fat Face — the closest match of the lot: relaxed British casualwear, soft jersey dresses and cosy sweats.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — coastal prints and organic cottons with the same generous, comfortable cuts.

  • White Stuff — quirky prints, embroidery and the same feel-good, throw-it-on energy.

  • Joules — countryside colour and pattern, ideal for the same active, weekend lifestyle.

  • Crew Clothing — nautical-leaning smart-casual if you want something a touch more tailored.

  • Lands’ End — dependable, reliably true-to-size casual basics and brilliant fleece.

  • Superdry — sportier, but a strong shout for hoodies and zip-throughs if it’s the layering you love.

Premium

  • Boden — the same playful prints with a more polished finish and lovelier fabrics.

  • Barbour — heritage outerwear and knitwear when you want the countryside look done properly.

Luxury / designer

  • Max Mara (the Leisure and Weekend lines) — elevated casual knitwear and relaxed tailoring for the investment version of a cosy, easy wardrobe.

Two independents worth knowing

  • Lily & Me — a Cotswolds independent with hand-drawn prints and the same relaxed, forgiving fits. If you love Weird Fish, you’ll adore this one.

  • Lighthouse Clothing — a Norfolk coastal brand doing breton stripes, proper waterproofs and easy dresses with real outdoorsy charm.
