What Is Sizing Like at Y-3 Menswear?

Y-3 runs large. Yohji Yamamoto built the label on a relaxed, draped, deliberately oversized silhouette, so nearly everything is cut generously on purpose. If you want the intended look, take your usual size. If you'd rather something that sits closer to the body, size down one — that's my move on tees and lighter knits.

The clothing uses standard alpha sizing (XS–XXL) across most of the range, mapped to adidas' own size blocks, which keeps it fairly consistent season to season. But "consistent" and "true to size" aren't the same thing here. Y-3 is consistently roomy — that's the whole point.

How the clothing actually fits

T-shirts and jerseys: boxy, dropped shoulders, a longer body. A medium wears like a slouchy large. Size down if you want any structure.
Sweatshirts and hoodies: cut for volume. The shoulder seam usually lands well past your actual shoulder — that's the design, not a fault.
Trousers and shorts: expect a mid-to-high rise, wide or tapered legs, and on some styles a dropped crotch. The waist is generally true; the leg is where the drama lives.
Outerwear: roomy through the body so it layers over knitwear. If you're between sizes on a shell or parka, the smaller one is usually plenty.

Y-3 footwear sizing

The trainers are built on adidas lasts, so they fit true to size for the most part — take your normal adidas number and you'll be right. The one caveat is the brand's more sculptural silhouettes, with chunky soles or sock-fit uppers; those can feel snug or unusual straight out of the box, so try before you buy where you can.

Styling it and what's on trend

Y-3 sits at the crossroads of technical sportswear and Japanese avant-garde, and the strongest way to wear it right now is head-to-toe monochrome — black on black, or off-white and grey — letting the cut and the fabric do the talking. Keep it minimal:

Anchor an oversized tee or crew under a longline shell.
Let a wide trouser break just above the trainer.
Skip loud logos — the silhouette is the statement.

The mood this season is "quiet technical": muted palettes, elevated fabrics, relaxed shapes. Y-3 is basically the blueprint for it.

Uniqlo (U and +J lines) — a Japanese design sensibility and technical fabrics with a relaxed fit that nods to the same world Yohji comes from.

INDEPENDENT / BOUTIQUE

Universal Works — British, utility-led, beautifully relaxed cuts. A great everyday alternative to Y-3's easier pieces.
Represent — British elevated streetwear with a heavier, more structured take on oversized. Good if you want the drama but a sharper edge.

DESIGNER / LUXURY

Yohji Yamamoto (mainline) — the natural upgrade. Same designer, more extreme silhouettes, all the drape and asymmetry Y-3 only hints at.
Rick Owens — avant-garde, monochrome, drapey. The obvious next step for anyone who falls for Y-3's shapes.
Stone Island — if it's the technical, fabric-forward side of Y-3 you love, this is where to spend.
